El Paso is the most populous of Colorado's 64 counties with 655,044 residents. Two-thirds of the county's population lives in the city of Colorado Springs which is also the county seat and location of the Extension office. Located on the 1-25 corridor with easy access to the Denver metro area to the north, El Paso County is close to 14 ski resort areas and served by a regional airport. While the western portion of the county is extremely mountainous, the eastern part is prairie land. PURPOSE OF POSITION: This individual will provide leadership for the overall family and consumer sciences program in El Paso County and also provide support for regional and state programming in food safety, food preservation, nutrition and health and local foods. The agent is also expected to contribute to and strengthen the overall Extension program offered in El Paso County and to help build new audiences. This individual will also develop community relationships, partnerships, and volunteer opportunities in order to grow the educational potential for residents, the county and Extension. RESPONSIBILITIES AND RELATIONSHIPS: This individual works as a member of the local county Extension team and is a local representative of Colorado State University and El Paso County. This person works under the guidance and supervision of the El Paso County Extension director. The successful candidate will: Program Planning, Development, Delivery, Evaluation and Reporting • Provide leadership for an actively engaged family and consumer science program in El Paso County. Seek out and develop local relationships, identify priority programming opportunities and develop, deliver, facilitate and evaluate appropriate educational opportunities. • Actively work with local, regional and state food safety program teams and related Program and Reporting Units to develop, deliver and integrate food safety and food preservation education into programming for families, consumer and cottage food audiences, producers/growers, and/or commercial enterprises. As part of these teams, serve as a resource on food safety and food preservation information/best practices and as a trainer of other Extension and partner organization trainers. • Actively participate on Extension program and reporting teams to help focus, develop and implement local, regional and statewide program efforts. • Collaborate with other El Paso County Agents and staff to incorporate FCS and other expertise into community program efforts. • Effectively communicate program direction, engagement and program outcomes to county stakeholders. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: • Master's degree . • Bachelor and/or Master's Degree(s) must be in Food Science and Nutrition, Public Health, Food Safety, or a closely related field . • Ability to distill technical and science-based information into educational materials for use by consumers, commercial entities, and producers. • Experience in audience needs identification, program development, delivery, and evaluation of results . • Demonstrated skill working with people as individuals and in groups; ability to forge equitable and successful partnerships with county commissioners and departments, other professionals and organizations, and to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team. • Evidence of drive and initiative . • Prior experience teaching adult or youth audiences and ability to communicate through public speaking, demonstration, presentations and writing as demonstrated through application materials and experience. • Demonstrated use of technology in managing and/or delivering educational programs . • Knowledge of and/or experience with methods of conflict resolution and group facilitation . • Personal or professional commitment to diversity as demonstrated by persistent effort, active planning, allocation of resources and/or accountability for diversity outcomes. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED: • Demonstrated expertise in food safety and home food preservation, and experience teaching one or both. • Course work, professional experience and/or background in food systems, on-farm food safety, farmers markets, cottage food production, and/or production agriculture. Experience or capacity to manage volunteers. • • Experience delivering online education. • Experience working with advisory committees and/or focus groups. • Demonstrated ability to program and/or market through mass media and/or social media. • Successful experience in developing financial support for educational programs including grant writing, contracting, or cost recovery efforts. • Ability to speak, write, a11u uei1ver educational programming in Spanish.
