Accomplishments

Taking from Racewalk.com "Talking with Carl Schueler, you would never guess what a fierce competitor he once was. Synonymous with success as a distance walker throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s,

Schueler displays a laid back attitude that can mislead you. The four-time Olympic Games qualifier had a long and successful career race walking, while balancing a real career and life outside of race walking. "

Carl is a 50km racewalker. His list of accomplishments include being a four-time Olympian (1980, 1984,

1988, and 1992). He finished 6th in 1984, 23rd in 1988 and 1992. Besides the Olympics, he has competed in two World Championships, six Racewalk World Cups, one Pan Am Games and six Racewalk

Pan Am Cups.

From 1980-1992, Carl won fourteen national championships, 50km-7 times, 40km-3 times, 35km-1time,

30km-2 times, 25km-1 time. He was ranked number one by "Track and Field News" every year from

1980-1992 except for 1983(graduate school and 1985 time off after the Olympic year).

In addition to his own career, Carl coached Kevin Eastler. Kevin an Air Force Academy Graduate competed in the 2000 and 2004 Olympics. Carl was also my coach. I have the dubious honor of being the first alternate in the 1992 and 1996 Olympics in the 10km racewalk.

Carl was the Team Coach for the USA Racewalk Team for the 1999 World Cup in Mezidon, France and the

2004 World Cup in Naumberg, Germany.

Affiliations The contributions that Carl has made to the Colorado Springs community is, in part , visible through all the organizations that he has been involved in over the years. He has been on the Board of Directors of the following organizations,

Energy Resource Council, Keep Colorado Springs Beautiful (Chairman), El Paso

County Retirement Board (Chairman during the time of the Mike Witty trial),

Southen Representative for the American Planning Association (APA), Colorado

Springs Chapter for the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

Describe why this individual or team should be inducted to the Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame

Carl, who had just received he masters in regional planning from the University of Michigan, moved to

Colorado Springs in 1984 to be part of a year long racewalk training camp that was taking place at the

Olympic Training Center. During this year he met Chuck Brown, a County Commissioner, at a function at the training center. Through this meeting, Carl began working for El Paso County. He retired from the county 24 years later. He is now employed at the City of Colorado Springs. Carl has always had the unique ability to train and hold down a full time job.

Carl embodies everything a citizen of Colorado Springs would look for in a Hall of Fame representative. In the world of sports, he was unquestionably the best US male racewalker from 1980-1992. He competed with the highest standards of integrity and sportsmanship. He is proud of the fact that in all of his years of competing, he dropped out of only one race. This was in Japan in the mist of a typhoon.

Colorado Springs served as homebase for many international athletes who would come and stay with us for months to be able to train at altitude. Colorado Springs has always followed Carl's name for any of the numerous newspaper articles about him. Everyone knows where he is from.

In his career, working in local government, Carl has devoted his life's work to this city. Can't imagine too many people that know more about Colorado Springs than Carl. He has represented this county and city with the highest level of professionalism every day through his work as a land use planner and all of his various community affiliations.
