EFFICIENT STREET LIGHTING ACT I NG TO DAY SAVE S MON EY Potential Opportunities and Benefits for Towns and Cities R E D U C T I O N O F E N V I R O N M E N TA L B U R D E N There is no city or town that doesn’t feel the budget crunch of increasing energy prices. In particular, the illumination of public spaces cuts deeply into budgets. More efficient alternatives have been available for a good while. However, there has been no better time than today to upgrade. Hess AG currently offers luminaires with which energy use can be cut by more than fifty percent, which represents a drastic reduction in fixed public spending expenses. Four alternatives are available to improve efficiency: 1. A completely new lighting design plan with greater spacing distances between the lighting units 2. Replacement of the poles and luminaires 3. Replacement of just the luminaires 4. Retrofitting of existing luminaires with new components via drastically decreased energy consumption, lower carbon dioxide emissions, minimum light pollution. Investment in new lighting is well worth the money, as it will pay for itself within a very short time. SIG N I F IC ANT SAVI NGS on annual energy costs. The City replaced numerous lighting fixtures with Hess’s RESIDENZA M luminaire. Besides its precise light control, the new luminaire enabled the City to use lower watt sources, while cutting carbon dioxide emissions and energy consumption. In addition, the existing poles could be used and several of the lighting units could be eliminated altogether. LIGHTING DESIGN Comprehensive, computer simulated lighting plan calculations performed by Hess provide the basis for efficient lighting solutions. Hess evaluates the status and potential of the existing system and situation, applying the information to make accurate calculations for the specific project. Efficient luminaires permit greater spacing distances between the lighting units, meaning fewer luminaires are required and less labour and maintenance are required for even greater savings. 2. LIGHT SOURCES Efficient lamps save energy and thereby money. Mercury vapour lamps are still used a great deal today, although they are grossly inefficient. Viable alternatives are: metal halide, high-pressure sodium, efficient fluorescent and LED light sources. 3. R EF LECTO RS Hess’s reflectors direct the light exactly where it is required, reducing light pollution and loss to a minimum while delivering superior efficacy. 4. MODERN CONTROL GEAR Energy saving control gear is essential to cutting lighting costs. Inefficient control gear and old wiring should be replaced. Electronic ballasts are much more efficient, long lasting and constant. Of course, at the forefront of improving the efficiency of lighting is the reduction of energy expense and carbon dioxide emissions. In addition, replacement of old systems produces a significant improvement in the quality of lighting. Improved optical conditions increase safety – in particular traffic safety – as well as the comfort of the citizens. Hess’s answer: Optimum lighting planning and employment of new lighting systems for the efficient use of light output with electricity savings of fifty percent. 5. QUALITY OF WORKMANSHIP Outdoor lighting fixtures must hold up to a host of extreme conditions. The degree to which dust and dirt are able to ingress the luminaire, which directly affects the efficiency, is of course dependant on the luminaire’s gasket and construction. Hess luminaires are manufactured to the highest possible quality standards. Their carefully engineered design and solid built construction guarantee unmatched durability. Moreover, they feature tool-less, ultra-quick maintenance, which significantly cuts operating costs. 6. LIGHTING CONTROL Combined with intelligent light management systems, Hess street lighting luminaires are extremely versatile, automatically adjusting to the particular conditions, such as time of day, weather and traffic to provide the operator with additional savings. The simplest form of light control is the conventional practice of using electrical relays for low traffic times of the night. EFFICIENT SERA reflector. Optical systems, such as the Sera system from Hess, use the light more effectively, directing it only where it is needed and thereby enabling the use of sources with reduced wattage for the same level of brightness.
