Barbara Rinella Dramatic Book Review and Luncheon - rsvp
OCT 2 Enjoy a three-course luncheon followed by the Dramatic Book Review “Finding the Dragon
Noon-3 pm Lady, The Mystery of Vietnam’s Madame Nhu” with Barbara Rinella.
This is a fascinating illumination of the life of a most controversial woman! Madame Nhu’s
background is filled with challenges, advantages and her enormous ambition. Born August
22, 1924, into a grand, landed family with ties to the Vietnamese Royal Family during the
French rule of Vietnam, she evolved into one of the most powerful women in Asia. Known
for her exquisite beauty, at age 18 she marries 30 year old Ngo Dinh Nhu, whose older
brother, Ngo Dinh Diem, will become President of the Republic of South Vietnam after the
Geneva Conference decides in 1954, to divide the country into two zones, putting the North
in the hands of the Communists ruled by the powerful Ho Chi Minh. Diem is not married,
so his younger brother becomes his chief political advisor and his sister-in-law will be his
“First Lady.” She is a central figure in the rise to power of Diem, the Communist’s desire to
rule Vietnam, the events that led to her title, “The Dragon Lady,” and the U.S. involvement
in the Vietnam War. Why did President John F. Kennedy call her a name that begins with “B”
and rhymes with “witch”? How did the US soldiers react to her during the Viet Nam war?
How will history treat her?
Barbara Rinella cannot wait to bring this beautiful, powerful, opinionated woman to life.
But this story would never have been possible without the diligence and dedication of a
young woman with a serious focus on the history of Vietnam. Monique Brinson Demery became fascinated by Vietnam’s unique history, the role of Mme. Nhu, and the fact that she totally “disappeared” in 1986 after even more family tragedies. Where was she hiding? Could
this young academic with a graduate degree in Asian studies from Harvard and two years of
living in Vietnam find the famous recluse? Yes! The story of how Monique Demery finds the
Dragon Lady is spectacular. If Monique had not pursued this famous recluse in 2005 with
diligence and determination, no one would ever have been able to connect with her and
engage her in telling her story. Madame Nhu died in 2011, after sharing her memories and
thoughts with none other than an amazing, resolute American.

Chicago Lake Shore Drive - rsvp

roadway. It wanders through four parks, past five major museums and a zoo. It is enhanced
by the signature architecture of Chicago, boasting some of the most prestigious addresses
in the world. Neal Samors and Bernard Judge will tell you why Lake Shore Drive visitors are
awed by it, and locals never tire of its beauty.
Famous Americans: JFK and Lee Harvey Oswald - rsvp
SEP 10 In the Burnham

his death was tragic. But how much do you know about his family history, his lifelong
health problems, and his marriage? You will be amazed by what you learn in this unique
multimedia presentation. Join Barry Bradford for a mesmerizing look at the people,
theories, facts, and events surrounding the brutal assassination of JFK. You will also learn

Famous Americans: Robert F. Kennedy and Jack Ruby - rsvp
SEP 17 In the Burnham
9:30-11:45 am
Wednesday
Robert F. Kennedy was the brother and most trusted confidante of assassinated president
John F. Kennedy, and he was the heir apparent to the Kennedy legacy. Barry Bradford will
review his unique background and the complex nature of a man who was alternately called
ruthless and compassionate, hated and loved. Equally as famous at the time, but for very
different reasons, was Jack Ruby. Ruby was the murderer of the man who assassinated
JFK, Lee Harvey Oswald. Ruby was a strange man whose role in history is controversial and
complex. Was he a Mafia hitman sent to silence a co-conspirator? Was he a hotheaded
patriot out to avenge the killing of JFK? Or, was he a mentally ill braggart who acted out of
some twisted logic?
Famous Americans: LBJ and Kilgallen - rsvp
SEP 24 In the Burnham
9:30-11:45 am
Wednesday
Two equally fascinating people sprang into the lime light after JFK was killed. Lyndon B.
Johnson, thought of as the polar opposite of JFK, was a much more effective politician and
president than his popular counterpart. His life story will amuse and amaze you when told
by Barry Bradford. Dorothy Kilgallen, well known as a panelist on What’s My Line, was the
only reporter to talk with Jack Ruby. She was the first woman reporter to cover murders.
She claimed he gave her an inside scoop, and then she died mysteriously before she could
publish it. Meet these two unique and famous Americans.
Famous Americans: Who Killed JFK - rsvp
OCT 1 In the Burnham
10 am-Noon
On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was fatally shot by a sniper at the Dealey
Plaza in Dallas, Texas. A ten-month investigation conducted by the Warren Commission
concluded that Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald, acting alone. But is this
the case? In this multimedia presentation, historian Barry Bradford will separate fact from
fiction in telling the story of the assassination of JFK. He will present a theory as to who did
it. Be prepared to have your assumptions challenged and your interest piqued.

legendary Sherlock Holmes, has invited his fellow cast members to his lavish Connecticut
castle for a holiday weekend of revelry. When one of the guests is stabbed to death, the
festivities in the isolated house quickly turn dangerous. It is up to Gillette who assumes the
persona of his beloved Holmes, to track down the killer before the next victim appears in
this witty, suspenseful caper.

Welcome
Bob & Janet Zilkowski Residence 2216
Bob and Janet lived in Peoria, IL prior to moving to The Garlands in July. They met
at Indiana University and have been married for 58 years. They have four children
and eight grandchildren. They formerly lived in Barrington where Janet taught
5th grade at North Barrington School and Bob taught shorthand, typing, and word
processing at Harper College.
They both enjoy music including symphonic, jazz and show tunes so look for them
at our Garlands Concerts in the PAC. Bob is interested in pursuing sketching and
photography and is interested in stocks and bonds. Janet enjoys knitting and would
like to get a knitting/stitching social group together, here at The Garlands as well as
joining one of our book clubs. They both enjoy traveling.

The Art Room
Submitted by Carol Smith
Thursdays, 10:00am – Noon,
in the Art Studio in PV
Did you know there is a wonderful art room at the
Garlands? All levels from novice to accomplished
artists enjoy this excellent amenity. We love to share
our knowledge and love of creating. Right now we are
watching a series of watercolor secrets and learning so
much about watercolor but also drawing, composition,
and perspective. We will soon start practicing all we
have learned.
If you have any interest in developing your artistic
side why not join the art group? There you will find the
opportunity to become acquainted with oils, acrylics,
watercolors, pastels, colored pencils, or just increase
your drawing skills.
Stop by the art room on the first floor of Prairieview
and check it out for yourself. We meet every Thursday
from 10:00am to noon. Warning – it may become
addictive.

FROM THE
Executive Director
“Twelve Years in the Making”
The Garlands has now celebrated our twelfth anniversary. Reflecting on
those years brings to mind hundreds of quality programs, special events and
experiences designed to enrich Member’s lives. For the past twelve years,
Jill has orchestrated an ongoing symphony of well balanced, educational,
entertaining and fun programs in which Members were invited to participate.
In 2009 when the EngAGE program was introduced to award-winning honors,
it encapsulated the great things happening with our activities, fitness,
wellness, nutrition and volunteerism. Jill Lund, Terry Choquette and Nate
Szkil continue to amaze us all at their creativity and passion in elevating the
calendar of program choices offered to Members.
When the idea of videoing a weekly “EngAGE Today!” show was introduced,
I realized that the often challenging part of the program development,
“content” was already mastered. This show, which Jill and I are privileged to
host, merely shares the great calendar of events and highlights which gives
Members an additional medium to guide them in choosing what they would
like to do each day or week.
The early episodes, (airing on Mondays at 8:00 am, 10:30 am and noon and
on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 8:00 am) have been a joy, not only to learn
more details about the programs, but to witness a video production that
enables the many winning personalities and talents of The Garlands to be
featured. We have brilliant and certainly-not-shy characters who are willing
to help this program be more meaningful and fun.
Spending time each week with Jill as Co-host and Nate as Executive Producer
and Videographer, has given me the additional chance to learn more
about Jill and Nate and their interests. Jill and I also realize that humor,
spontaneity and a light hearted approach are key to our viewers’ enjoyment
of this program. Furthermore, the joy of learning about the great people
who live and work at The Garlands will be most valuable in connecting our
Garlands Family.
Warm regards,
David A. Loop, Executive Director
