Optics
Optical fibres are fibres made of glass which transport a signal containing
several types of information at very high speeds in the form of pulses of light.
This technology allows very high data flows to be achieved, up to several tens of
Gigabits/second.
The use of optical fibre technology allows networks to be fed over long
distances with minimum losses. It also offers the advantage of being insensitive
to electromagnetic interference.
3M offer fibre optic solutions for the main types of networks for the longand short-distance markets:
FTTH : With its extensive experience in FTTH, 3M offers a complete solution
from the fibre optic node (exchange) up to the subscriber point (interior
distribution device).
LAN : The equivalent of the VDI product for copper with RJ45 Keystone jacks,
3M lists a full fibreoptics range for your LAN networks.
Security Video : 3M offers solutions to meet the installation needs of
your Security Video systems. The products can be installed quickly and are easy
to use.
DATACENTER : 3M offers solutions for Meet Me Room (Copper and Fibre).

Description of the FTTH Network
ON (Optical Node)
The ON is the location which houses the active components for transmission and
switching and which acts as the interface between the collection and access networks.
Optical distribution systems are available for open frames or for 19" racks. The choice
between these two installation options mainly depends on the size of the location.
For a large, shelter-type location the RFO NG solution on open frames is more suitable
for more flexibility during patching. For smaller locations, the MODF solution for
19” racks is the most suitable since it is more compact.

Transport network
The transport network, also known as the access network, routes the fibres from the
access node to the street cabinet. High capacity fibre optic cables and splice protection
enclosure are used for this part of the network.
3M offers a full range of splice protection enclosures.
There are four criteria of selection:
- Network configuration: It is essential to know, whether configuration is of MID SPAN,
STRAIGHT JOINT, DERIVATION PONT or DISTRIBUTION TYPE.
The type of configuration involved will determine the front face of the housing.
- The environment: This criteria determines the necessary IP (Protection class) for the
housings. Locations with direct water exposure may need a higher IP class.
- The capacity: This relates to the number and type of splices at the point of connection
- The cables: This relates to cable characteristics such as the diameter, the number of
fibres and the structure.

Description of the FTTH Network
FTTH access and distribution network
The access and distribution network includes the section from the street cabinet up
to the the fibre optic distribution point (DP). The street cabinet is a point where the
building operator provides other operators with access to the lines. The fibre optic
distribution point (DP) is the node in the access network architecture from which clients
are connected. Closures protect the jointing points of cables between these two network
locations.

Distribution solution for buildings
Connections in buildings are the final stage in an FTTH network. Fibres located at the
base of a building are distributed and finally connected to subscribers.
There are two types of architecture:
"Direct Drop" architecture (1)
An architecture is said to be "direct
drop" when at floor landings there
are no fibre boxes provided between
the Interior Optical Termination in the
communications board for each of the
dwellings and the operators services
location (or room) at the base of the
building. In this case an individual
"drop" cable links each dwelling to the
operators' services location (or room).

for exchange optical distribution units
It is used for fibre distribution patchcord management on frames.
RFO NG exists in 12- or 6-drawers block with respective fibre capacities of

The new BPEO Size 0 watertight splice protection closure has been specifically designed
to easily connect subscribers in the distribution network using ITU G652.D or ITU.
G657.A2 single-mode fibres.
Its compactness (volume less then 2 litres) means it can be used in any type of chamber,
even the smallest.
Its butt configuration facilitates the use in narrow chambers.

Its double port and its 14 single ports cover all applications, depending on the

The 8686 FTTH Wall Outlet is a universal access point for FTTH end user installation.
This outlet is designed to match with new generation of field mountable connectors like
3M No Polish Connectors (NPC).
Field mountable connector termination in the 8686 outlet avoid installing a fiber storage
tray and splicing.
Alternatively, the splicing of pigtails and the storage of splices, either fusion
or 3M Fibrlok™ mechanical splices is designed into the concept.
On the wall cable entry is possible from either the sides or from the top of the outlet.
The 8686 outlet can be mounted on the wall or on underwall 60 mm boxes.
Up to 4 SC simplex couplings can be mounted if used with G.657.A bend insensitive
fibre.
