UNISTREAM WATER COOLED DIESEL DRIVEN PUMPSET National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) ) SPP Pumps Limited, 1420 Lakeview, Arlington Business Park, Theale, Reading, Berkshire, RG7 4SA OPERATION The main diesel pump automatically starts when the controller receives a signal from the system pressure switch due to a system pressure reduction greater than that which the jockey pump can cope with and continues to operate until manually stopped. Initiation can also occur if the main electric pump fails to start or by other initiators. PUMP Design The pump units are taken from the SPP end suction back-pull-out range of centrifugal units being manufactured in accordance with DIN 24255 and FM approved and / or UL listed where necessary or required. The suction and discharge branches being cast integral with the volute casing gives a back-pull-out facility permitting the removal of back cover, stuffing box and impeller without disturbance of casing or pipework. The impeller, shrouded with balancing vanes, is machined and hand finished smooth and keyed to the shaft. The wear ring gives fine clearances for high efficiency to be maintained. The shaft is machined to close tolerances and of amply proportions to transmit the maximum load. The sleeve extends from the impeller through the stuffing box to protect the shaft against wear, erosion and corrosion and is renewable. The stuffing box is of deep design and soft packed for proper sealing The grease lubricated bearings are mounted in a housing spigoted to provide perfect alignment Connections The end suction and top discharge branches are flanged and drilled to BS4504 PN16 Construction The casing is cast iron and case wear ring and impeller are bronze. The carbon steel shaft is fitted with a bronze sleeve. ENGINE Design The engine meets the requirements of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA20), where applicable / required is FM approved / UL Listed and is of the multi cylinder, four stroke, compression ignition, mechanical injection type, capable of operating continuously on full load at an ambient temperature of 25 Deg C and altitude up to 90m for a period of six hours. Above this temperature / altitude the engine produces less power. It is equipped with two methods of starting, Automatic and Manual, both by means of a battery powered electric starter motor. Raw water to the heat exchanger is taken from the discharge of the fire pump through a threaded rigid piping cooling line system fitted with:2 Manual shut off valves. 1 Flushing type strainer. 1 Pressure regulator. 1 Automatic electric solenoid valve (not required on vertical turbine pump). 1 Pressure gauge. By-pass cooling line installed around the above assembly fitted with:2 Manual shut off valves. 1 Flushing type strainer. Battery System Two sets of lead acid batteries are mounted below the controller and connected by leads to the engine starting system. They are rack supported above the floor, secured against displacement and located where they are not subject to mechanical injury or flooding with water and readily accessible for servicing. CONTROLLER Design The Controller Panel meets the requirements of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA20), is FM approved, to provide start up and monitoring of the diesel pumpset and alarm indication of any problems. It is a six attempt engine control unit suitable for operating diesel engine fitted with twin battery systems connected negative to earth. The unit operates off a 220 – 240 volt, 1 phase, 50 / 60Hz supply. LED lamp test, alarm reset, controller test and horn silencing are also accessed through this OID. The system status data (including system pressure, start pressure, battery 1 voltage, battery 2 voltage, battery 1 charger amps, battery 2 charger amps, oil pressure, water temperature, current time & date, system events and notifications such as remote / local start etc, number of starts, total hours run, time remaining on sequential start, etc) is displayed on the OID and LED annunciator. The microprocessor based logic with real time / date clock has capability of minimum 14 day running without DC power. Data logging carried out in two separate storage logs for pressure and events for up to 30 days is readable through OID or available on an SD memory card. Enclosure All the components are housed in a dust and damp protecting single section sheet steel IP54 enclosure having a hinged interlocked front cover. The enclosure is skid mounted and designed for bottom cable entry.
