The colors within each sash represent the colors of their nation’s flag. 1 David Pearce, Ph.D. Guest Speaker An active researcher on juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, or Batten disease, David Pearce is Sanford Health’s president of research. Pearce, who started his research on the disease in 1997, has published more than 100 papers on the topic. He also oversees a national registry for rare diseases known as the Coordination of Rare Diseases at Sanford. He has served on numerous National Institutes of Health review committees, has organized rare disease workshops for the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke arm of the NIH and is currently a member of the executive committee for the International Rare Diseases Research Consortium. In his role at Sanford, he is responsible for overseeing the development of research programs that impact patients. In the current era of personalized medicine, we are learning to apply genetics and genomics to an understanding of the “human genome” and how all 3.2 billion letters of this DNA code relates to our health and predisposition to certain health conditions. With this information, additional treatment options often termed clinical trials are provided on top of standard of care to patients. Pearce completed his undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree with honors in biological sciences at Wolverhampton Polytechnic in 1986. He gained his doctorate of philosophy in 1990 at the University of Bath in the United Kingdom and did postdoctoral training at the University of Rochester and Oxford University. 2 Valerie Kleinjan Guest Speaker Being busy is second nature for Valerie Kleinjan. After earning a master’s degree in communication studies from State in 2014, she started pursuing a master’s degree in counseling and human resource development. These academic pursuits came following her bachelor’s degree in psychology while starting as the point guard for Northwestern College’s three-straight NAIA Division II national champion teams. Kleinjan has been a graduate teaching assistant for the College of Education and Human Sciences, the Van D. and Barbara B. Fishback Honors College and the Department of Communication Studies and Theatre. She has taught Speech 101 (classroom and online), FirstYear Seminar, Interdisciplinary Group Processes, and Honors Lifespan Development. In addition to her teaching duties, she also is a coach for LeadState, coordinated the Fishback Honors College Peer Mentoring Program and developed mental health workshops for the Fishback Honors College. Kleinjan, who has accepted an instructor position in the Department of Counseling and Human Development, hopes to continue her teaching career and be a strong advocate for collegiate student mental health. She is the daughter of Russ and Barb Kleinjan. Her father farms near Lake Oakwood and her mother is a lecturer for communication and Honors courses. Her brother, Andy, also a State graduate, teaches and coaches basketball at Harrisburg High School. 3 Ruth Harper, Ph.D. HONORARY MARSHAL B.A., CORNELL COLLEGE, 1973 M.ED., UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-OSHKOSH, 1977 PH.D., KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY, 1987 One who treasures the ongoing relationships with her students, Ruth Harper will step away from her full-time academic career later this year. A professor in counseling and human development at State, Harper has delivered more than 50 national invited or refereed presentations on college student mental health and Native American student success. Her talks have taken her to China and allowed her to receive many honors. The American College Personnel Association has awarded her its Annuit Coeptis Award for meaningful mentoring over many years while that organization’s Native American Indigenous Network honored her with the Danielle Terrance Award “for courage and perseverance in advancing Native American Higher Education.” At State, Harper has received the following: the Award for Scholarship in 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2011; the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2000 and 2009; the Graduate School Teacher of the Year by the Students’ Association in 2010 and the Outstanding Advisor Award in 2014. She also presented Sewrey Lectures in 2000 and 2016. She is the first author on “More Than Listening: A Casebook for Using Counseling Skills in Student Affairs Work,” co-authored “Assisting Students with Disabilities,” and recently submitted a manuscript on the topic of pedagogy skills for student affairs professionals in a variety of contexts. Harper earned a B.A. from Cornell College (Iowa), an M.Ed. at the University of WisconsinOshkosh, and a Ph.D. from Kansas State University. Before beginning her faculty career at SDSU, Harper worked as a counselor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and as an administrator at Nebraska Wesleyan University. Dr. Harper advises Chi Sigma Alpha, the honor society in student affairs professional preparation. For many years, she has co-advised SDSU’s Gay-Straight Alliance and served on the Tiospaye Council of the American Indian Education & Culture Center. She has chaired or served on innumerable search committees, as well as a large number of standing committees at SDSU. Ruth treasures ongoing relationships with her current and former students, follows their careers and lives with interest, and delights in their many successes. She will retire from SDSU August 1, and will continue part-time at SDSU next year, working with a project to expand American Indian graduate education. 4 RL Erion, Ph.D. HONORARY MARSHAL B.S. Tornquist, Ph.D. Chief University Librarian 6 The Ceremonial Mace The Ceremonial Mace is traditionally carried by a university marshal at all formal academic occasions. The staff, which stands thirty-six inches high from top to bottom, is made of walnut with a mahogany finish. It is trimmed in 14k plated gold. At the top of the Mace is the great seal of South Dakota State University. The engraved inscription reads “South Dakota State University founded 1881.” The Mace was presented to the University as a gift from the SDSU Alumni Association and was used for the first time at President Peggy Gordon Miller’s inauguration, September 19, 1998. The Ceremonial Mace has an ancient history as a symbol of authority. In medieval times it was a studded, clublike weapon, made of iron and capable of breaking armor. It became associated with the protection of the king in France and England and was carried by the king’s sergeant-atarms. In the thirteenth century it was used for civil purposes and figured in the processions of city mayors and other dignitaries. Eventually the Mace became a symbol also for academic institutions, an emblem of order and authority in the pageantry of ceremonial occasions. The University Presidential Medallion The University Presidential Medallion, a traditional symbol of authority of the Office of the President, is a 14k gold replica of the University Seal, is three inches in diameter, and is cast as a single piece. The reverse side of the Medallion is engraved with the names the University has formally held since its inception: Dakota Agricultural College, 1884-1889; South Dakota Agricultural College, 1890-1907; South Dakota State College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts, 1907-June 30, 1964; and South Dakota State University, July 1, 1964-Present. The University Presidential Medallion was designed by Sioux Falls artist Jurek Jakowicz and was presented as a gift to the University by the SDSU Foundation. The Medallion is part of the University’s heritage and will pass to future presidents. It is traditionally worn by the University president at important ceremonial occasions. 7 Conferring of Graduate Degrees Spring 2016 President David L. SPOT ON ALUMNI GREEN C ampuses are built brick by brick, year by year, student by student, alumnus by alumnus. South Dakota State has been built by you, made stronger by you, and we need your help to keep growing. We need your help to push the Alumni Green project over the finish line. This is your chance to put your name on the Alumni Green project – a place for you to return and a place to grow the future of SDSU. The outdoor place between the new University House and the new Alumni Center will include 5-feet-wide by 9 ½-feet tall features of the Campanile, Jackrabbit and other SDSU iconic symbols carved into original limestone from the Campanile. For a gift of at least $1,000, your name will be permanently displayed on one of these features. There are limited opportunities available, so make your commitment today to ensure your permanent spot on the Alumni Green. For generations, visitors will see the names of those individuals, families and businesses that were responsible for the spectacular area across from our famed Campanile.
