PDV mission is for engaging the targets in the exo-atmosphere region at about more than 120 km altitude. Both, the PDV interceptor and the two-stage target equipped with the motor, were especially developed for the PDV mission. The target, mimicking a hostile ballistic missile approaching from more than 2000 km away, was launched from a ship in the Bay of Bengal. In an automated operation, radar-based detection and tracking systems detected and tracked the hostile ballistic missile. The computer network, with the help of data received from radars, predicted the trajectory of the incoming ballistic missile. Fully ready PDV took-off once the computerised system gave the necessary command for lift-off. The interceptor, guided by high-accuracy Inertial Navigation System (INS) supported by a Redundant Micro Navigation System (RMNS), moved towards the estimated point of the interception. Once missile crossed atmosphere, the heat shield ejected and the IR seeker dome opened to look at the target location as designated by the mission computer. With the help of inertial guidance and IR seeker, the missile moved for interception. All events were monitored in real time by the Telemetry/Range Stations, at various locations. Shri Avinash Chander, SA to RM, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and DG DRDO congratulated the mission team. Dr VG Sekaran, DS and DG (MSS); Dr Satish Reddy, OS and Director, Research Centre Imarat (RCI); Shri Adalat Ali, Programme Director, AD; Shri Y Sreenivas Rao, Project Director, AD; Shri MVKV Prasad, OS and Director, Interim Test Range (ITR); Smt Tessy Thomas, OS and Project Director, Agni 4, and other senior DRDO officials were present during the test. Launch of PDV Young Scientist and Best Performance Awards conferred DRDO has made significant contributions in putting India on the path of achieving self-reliance in critical defence technologies. It reiterates DRDO’s depth of technical talent and its capacity to complete large and complex projects. To honour young scientists for excellent contributions in their areas of expertise, and scientific, technical and administrative personnel for their excellent overall performance, DRDO conferred 4 May 2014 the Young Scientist Awards and the Best Performance Awards at a function organised on 25 March 2013 at Dr Bhagavantham Auditorium, Metcalfe House, Delhi. Glancing angle X-ray diffractometer and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy reveal smooth β-SiC coating and its subsequent transformation into α-SiC on silicon substrate. The film was found uniform with a thickness ranging from 0.6 to 1.2 μm at different temperatures. The average particle size, as seen from the Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy, ranges from 7 to 385 nm approximately; the lowest range being 7-20 nm, which hitherto has not yet been reported using LPCS as SiC precursor. The coated samples also showed substantial increment of hardness (~ 18.8 GPa) and toughness (~ 1.51 MPa m1/2) both of which increases with increase in deposition temperature. The smooth and thin SiC coating on silicon formed in three different moderate temperatures compared to very high temperature for other CVD assisted coating. Enhanced hardness and toughness makes LPCS generated SiC coating a promising material in critically harsh environment required for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) application. A novel rectifying interface material, using carbon rich crystalline (C)-SiC and n-type Si by a modified CVD technique using liquid polycarbosilane, as a precursor at 900 °C has also been developed. Phase Change Material Cool Vest and Cap Extreme summer heat in tropical climate of India adversely affects the health of the populace residing in these areas. Body's mechanism of cooling becomes ineffective due to excessive water and mineral losses resulting into heat exhaustion, heat cramps, heat rash, fainting, heat stroke or loss of life due to excessive heat. Armed forces also face a number of heat-related problems especially in desert area. Defence Laboratory (DL), Jodhpur, has developed Phase Change Material (PCM) cool vest and cap to significantly reduce the heat stresses. Vest has a number of pockets to hold PCM cool packs developed by DL. The PCM, inside the packs, stores coolness as latent heat while charging and releases it while discharging to provide comfort to human body. The exhausted PCM packs can be recharged. The vest and cap have been evaluated in simulated heat conditions to study their physiological effects on human body. Both have been found effective in reducing sweat rate by 30-40 per cent and maintained heart rate and body temperature within safe limits while working in hot climate. Vest and cap were found effective in reducing heat stress with Nuclear Biological Chemical (NBC) suits. 10 May 2014 Field trials and evolution have been carried out by the Indian Army, Border Security Force and Railways. BSF has placed requirements for 2000 sets of vest and cap. Products are also being evaluated by the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy. Cool vest and cap have civilian spin-off also and can be used by fire fighters, industrial workers, sports persons, etc. Products are under transfer of technology (TOT) through DRDO-FICCI Accelerated Technology Assessment and Commercialisation (ATAC) programme. Salient Features Material of construction Cotton/Nylon fabric Number of pockets 12 in vest and 2 in cap Weight Vest: 2 kg, Cap: 0.3 kg Recharging time 4-5 hrs in refrigerator Comfort duration 2.5 hrs with single pack 3.5-4 hrs with double packs International Women’s Day L to R: Ms Alka Suri, Shri S Sundaresh, Dr V Shantha, Shri Avinash Chander, Dr P Sivakumar and Ms Jayashree Varadhan releasing the souvenir International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated on 8 March every year to commemorate the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.
