A
bout College
F
ifty years ago, three visionaries in the public domain, Smt Durgabai
Deshmukh, Dr K.L. Rao and Dr C. Anna Rao, translated their zeal
of promoting the cause of high quality education into reality, in the
shape of Sri Venkateswara College. Fired with the zeal of promoting
the cause of education, the College was set up at New Delhi under
the benign auspices of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD),
Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh in 1961. Sri Venkateswara College has
seen tremendous development since its inception. From its modest
beginning in a school building of the Andhra Education Society at
Rouse Avenue, New Delhi with 273 students and 13 staff members,
it is now located in its own spacious buildings across 15 acres, in the
heart of the Capital at Dhaula Kuan. The foundation stone for the
construction of the College building was laid on August 20, 1961
by Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, India’s outstanding teacher, scholar
and statesman. This year, the College celebrates its Golden Jubilee
with a renewed commitment to making Sri Venkateswara College a
pioneer of excellence in the field of education.
The TTD is an autonomous organization managing the affairs of Lord
Balaji. While it maintains 12 temples and their sub-shrines, it employs
about 14,000 people and runs charitable and educational institutions
throughout the country. Though the initial objective of starting a
college in Delhi was to cater to the educational needs of students
hailing from the Southern states of India, this TTD institution soon
outgrew its regional character. It has now become one of the most
sought after co-educational colleges in India.
Today, the College has 231 teaching and non-teaching staff and
around 2500 students on its rolls, studying a variety of courses in
the Humanities, Commerce and Science disciplines. Apart from the
formal, academic courses the college also offers 3 Vocational courses
and several short-term add-on courses that serve to enhance the
academic profile of students. The College also offers 11 Postgraduate
Courses for study. The dedicated and well-trained academic faculty at
Sri Venkateswara College works closely with the student community,
nurturing talent and honing intellectual abilities in its continuing
commitment to excellence.
For its successes and its multifaceted profile, Sri Venkateswara
College has been recognized for its potential and hailed as a centre
of excellence in the field of education by the University Grants
Commission (2004) & Star College by Department of Biotechnology,
Govt. of India (2011).
