Match Day
Match Day a
Grand Slam for
area charities
The Mecosta County community hit it out
of the park at the 2013 Match Day event,
raising a record $898,262 for area charities.
The November event, with a baseball
theme, surpassed the 2012 event total by a
whopping quarter of a million dollars.
“We’re just ecstatic,” said Match Day
Chair Deb Patterson, foundation first
vice president. “The area non-profit
organizations really worked hard to get
their donors out - and it showed.”
Foundation board members threw out the
first pitch with foam baseballs to start the
event, with Isabel Kempton representing
the Manna Pantry securing one lucky
baseball with a $200 prize. Special games
and events were held throughout the
event to stir in fun and award additional
prize money to groups.
“It was fun, and wildly successful,” said
Tim Zehr, foundation president. “Hats off
to the charities and special thanks to the
10
match pool donors who make the event
possible each year.”
The event continues to grow. In 2010,
$253,000 was raised, in 2011, $425,000 was
generated, followed by $638,000 in 2012.
With this year’s event near $900,000 the
four year total now exceeds $2.2 million
dollars.
“It’s really humbling,” Zehr said. “The good
people in our community continue to dig
deep to support their favorite charities.”
Four endowed funds were created at
Match Day, including the Sharada Baliga
Fund for Big Rapids Public Schools Special
Education, Angels of Action Endowment
Fund, Riley MacKenzie Endowment Fund
and the Rita and Jerry Conrad Scholarship,
which benefits local graduates.
“Every time we get a new endowment it’s
a great thing,” said Scott Hill-Kennedy,
foundation past president. “It makes us
feel good, because it says local people
trust the foundation to manage the money
correctly.”
There was again an emphasis on getting
area youth exposed to philanthropy at
Match Day.
“They’re the givers of tomorrow, so we
take special pride on getting the children
involved,” Patterson said.
“The kids had fun with a scavenger hunt
to encourage them to go around the room
and learn about each of our nonprofit
organizations,” said Stacy Chaput,
foundation second vice president.
Prizes for the most donations for the
non-profits went to Mecosta County
Senior Center; BR First United Methodist
Church and Michigan Dental Association
Foundation-Mission of Mercy. For the
endowments, prizes went to Angel’s of
Action, Riley MacKenzie Fund and the
MCCF Community Needs Fund.
All donations to non-profit charities and
to endowed funds within the foundation
were matched with funds raised from a
$75,000 match pool.
Match pool donors were the Shaw and
Betty Walker Foundation, Meijer, Edward
Jones-Dan Terry, Lori Bell, Love Realty,
MCCF and the Trustees of MCCF, Big
Rapids Products, Chemical Bank, Gary
Trimarco Automotive, Mohnke Funeral
Home, Jordan Balkema Elder Law Center,
Spirit of the Season Endowment and Great
Lakes Energy. In-kind donors were the
Pioneer Group, Holiday Inn, Patterson’s
Floral, Preferred Office Machines and
Baker’s Management Service.

Message from the President
Dear friends
and neighbors:
TIM ZEHR
Mecosta County Community
Foundation President
Thanks to you, 2013 was a very exciting
year for the Mecosta County Community
Foundation on many fronts. We
strengthened relationships with our
Foundation friends and developed
many new ones in our combined
efforts to enhance our Mecosta County
communities. Together we created four
new funds including the Riley McKenzie
Fund, Angels of Action Fund, Jerry and
Rita Conrad Educational Fund, and the
Sharada Baliga Special Education Fund.
These endowed Funds will provide
an endless gift of giving within our
community. This brings the total number
of funds within MCCF to 64, representing
record high total assets of $4,388.333.
This is gratifying in that 23 years ago a
group of concerned community leaders
began MCCF with $100,000. This past
year we received $166,051 in individual
gifts. MCCF was pleased to grant $13,850
in education scholarships and $21,960 in
the spring and fall grants to the many
deserving organizations within Mecosta
County. Our MCYAC students granted
$9,110 to various organizations and this
work is developing future philanthropic
leaders in our community.
Together, at Match Day 2013, we
“Knocked it out of the Park” generating
$898,262 in 7 hours! This event continues
to grow beyond our expectations based
on the very generous folks who help
MCCF with Match Pool dollars and the
many hard working people who lead our
non-profit organizations within Mecosta
County. Over the past four years, this
event has put more than $2,213,000 into
our Mecosta communities! That is a lot
of effort, a lot of money, and a lot of love
4
that this community should be very proud
of. We often hear comments from our
match day participants that they simply
could not do the wonderful work they do
without your support of this event. Thank
you for your “Can Do” attitude!
Please note on the next page the faces
and names of the Foundation Board of
Trustees. They are familiar to many of you.
They work hard to ensure your generous
contributions to MCCF are managed with
integrity. Together, as Trustees, it is our
mission to build your confidence in us by
strengthening our standards and ethical
practices. We want to provide you with a
Philanthropic Home for your assets. We
will work hard to earn it. I would like to
thank these folks for allowing me to be a
part of such a high caliber team.
It is with great sadness that we said
goodbye to Robyn Stratton in 2013.
Robyn was the Administrative Executive
for MCCF for the past 4 years. Robyn
held each of us accountable. She kept
the i’s dotted and the t’s crossed. She
read our minds and anticipated our
needs. She was the face of MCCF in our
community and many of you counted on
her for answers to your questions. We
are fortunate that Robyn defined for us
the standards that we will use to replace
her. She will leave very large shoes to fill.
Thank you Robyn from the entire Board
of Trustees. Job very well done! Good
luck in your future endeavors.
In closing, please understand your
importance as our neighbor and part
of the best community in Michigan. We
appreciate you so very much. No doubt
we will continue to call on you from time
to time to help us. Together we can do
anything!

on a mission
The Community Foundation Grants
Committee makes grants from the
earnings on the Community Needs
Fund Endowment twice annually – in
April and in October – to Mecosta
County nonprofit organizations and
those that service the county. The
Mecosta County Youth Advisory
Committee (MCYAC) follows the
6
same grant-making schedule.
In 2013 the Grants Committee and
MCYAC awarded grants totaling
$31,070 from the earnings from the
Community Needs Endowment and
the Youth Endowment of Mecosta
County.
The Community Needs Fund
Endowment is an endowment that
we plan to keep growing in a big
way so that we have more and more
earnings to award in the form of
grants each year. This is important
to our community because this is
a flexible fund that can be used to
address the highest needs or current
challenges and or opportunities
that present themselves within our
community.
Our growth plans for this endowment
are essential to fulfill our mission
statement “Giving together to
enhance our community”.
Grants went to many important
projects within the community (see
page 7 - 2013 Grants).

MCYAC does
great things
Mecosta County Youth Advisory
Council has done a variety of things
this year to support our mission: “to
address the needs of the youth of
Mecosta County by way of granting
funds for the furthering of their
lives.” In the fall the group held the
first of our biannual grant meetings,
8
where we review grant requests
and allot money to charities that
fulfill the “MCYAC” mission. A few
of the organizations we granted to
this fall included Angels of Action,
Organizers for Youth, and Big Rapids
Middle School. This past November,
“MCYAC” students volunteered
their time to the county-wide charity
event known as “Match Day,” that
in total raised nearly $890,000 in a
single day. Looking to the future, we
will have our second annual grant
meeting this spring and look forward
to seeing all the work local non-profits
are doing to support area youth. This
spring, we are also looking into some
potential projects and fund raisers for
the group to participate in, so keep a
look out for MCYAC students doing
great things! As “MCYAC” we will
continue to brainstorm ideas to raise
funds for the general fund, promote
philanthropy, and assess the needs of
Mecosta County Youth.
