The million dollar question is: “What is the key to a successful business?"
Offering unique products, customer service, and competitive pricing are all
key components. However, the evolution and planning for the future of a
company is to have a transformation in customer service. With clear
results in mind, first analyze your market and how you can gain your
customers confidence.
Your planning should start with obtaining a full understanding of your
customers and their needs. The most impactful experience your customer
will have is the interaction between them and a real person. Face to face
customer service, in this age of online shopping, is what your customers
will remember and talk about. If it was a good experience, they will brag
about it, likewise if it was a bad one they will make sure that everyone
knows not to use your services.
Make your customers the main focus. Integrate customer service in your
daily practices to set the example of what great customer service is. If a
problem arises, don't make excuses provide an immediate solution. The
problem will only grow if it is not addressed instantly. When applicable
accept responsibility by acknowledging your mistakes and offering a sincere
apology. This will help build your customers trust. When your customers’
expectations are exceeded by the value you provide with your products and
services, you will be on your way to having a successful business. Great
customer service always pays off. When you go above and beyond for your
customers, you will obtain growth, loyalty, referrals and success.
Support your customer service, with unique products. We all know that
cheap things end up being expensive. Consider offering high quality
products that are competitively priced and cannot be easily purchased
elsewhere. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel, just offer products that
there is already a demand for. Just as important, add value instead of
discounting your pricing. Don't cut your bottom line short. Your focus
should be to create value in all of the products and services you offer. In the
end the value you deliver will build your customers confidence and satisfaction about your services. The best way to grow your customer base is by
offering services and products of high quality.

Win, Win Situation!
In the pool industry, how many opportunities do
you have to both do well and do good? When can
you make a nice easy profit, perform a money
saving service for your customer and conserve the
environment? The answer is easy and is sitting
right in PEP’s warehouse!
This provides a payback of between 1.5 and 7
years, depending on your local fuel costs. They
also typically last longer than gas and heat
pump pool heaters.” Imagine your customer
not paying the $300-$800 per month gas bill to
swim warm.

PEP’s 5th Annual Golf Tournament took place on Friday November
20, 2015 at the majestic San Juan Hills Golf Club. Our customers and vendors
were eager to tee off at an early 8am start time. The morning started off cold
but by mid day the temperature was perfect at 75 degrees being the high, with
little to no wind.
My fondest memory is the socializing that goes on between all in attendance,
from our customers to our vendors. It’s nice to have a day where everyone puts
aside the fact that you are playing against some of your top competitors, to just enjoy
some leisure time together.
We would like to thank our customers for their
support through out the year and for spending a day
with us on the golf course. Big thank you to our
Vendors, without them these memorable events
would not be possible. Lastly congratulations to
all the raffle winners, tournament winners and especially to the
Zodiac Team on their 1st place win!

Upselling Handrails
As “baby boomer”
pool owners are getting
older many of them
need to add handrails
to help them in and out
of their pool safely.
Pools that didn’t need
a rail before now
need handrails. Pool
professionals can make
extra profit dollars
by offering to add
handrails to an existing
pool, during a remodel
or new construction.
Flanged Rail Details
Rails on a pool don’t have to be ugly or dated
anymore. New designer rails are a great way to
update an existing or new pool with little effort.
These rails closely follow the functionality of
traditional style rails but give the pool a modern
and contemporary feel. They use the same anchor
spacing as the traditional rails so no additional
installation work is required. It’s an easy way for
a pool to get a “facelift”. Designer rails do cost
more than a standard rail goods because they have
additional welds, are made of thicker steel and are
bent on a costly large radius rail bender. However,
this extra money spent on a designer rail is still a
good value when you think about the visual impact
compared to the cost of replacing tile or decking.
Handrails come in 304 stainless steel alloy
(standard pool grade) or 316L alloy (marine
grade) and in various wall thicknesses (.049” and
.065” are most common). Rails can be powdercoated or thermo plastic (TPC) coated in many
attractive colors. Many homeowners prefer their
rails to be colored to match their tile or decking
plus the lighter colors are cooler to the touch. For
salt pools TPC rails are the best option as they
are encapsulated in a durable textured corrosive
protective finish.
Most installers will use 4”
bronze anchors to set a rail
in a pool deck during new
construction. On an existing
pool anchors are typically
added two ways. Option
One: cut out a section of the
deck, add the anchors and
then re-pouring the concrete
in that section. Option Two:
core drilling the deck; add
the anchors and pouring
concrete around the anchor.
Both of these options are
time consuming. In some
instances an anchor cannot be used but there is a
new line of “Deck Top Mounted Rails” (DTM) that
comes complete with flanges, escutcheons, and
stainless steel hardware.
In lieu of using anchors the new DTM rails take
about 45 minutes to install. These DTM rails have
a 4” welded stainless steel flange on the bottom
the rail. This is what you mount to the deck. You
just need a hammer drill, ½” masonry bit, 3/8”
socket and some compressed air. DTM rails are
not compatible with paver decks. Check with
your local electrical code to determine bonding
requirements. Bond the anchor, rail or flange in
accordance to code.
Don’t forget to start making extra profit dollars
by offering rails to your customers. Brochures and
displays are available. Traditional, designer or
DTM rails can be a safe and stylish way to enter
and exit the swimming pool plus they can add
additional dollars to your bottom line.

Filter Sizing
Choosing the correct
filter size is a critical part
of assuring an efficient
circulation system.
Whether replacing an
existing filter system or
new construction, it is
important to understand
what needs to be
considered when sizing
a filter system. It is easy
to just replace an existing
filter system with an exact
replacement but what if
the existing filter system
was incorrect? Below are
a couple steps to ensure
that the appropriate filter size is installed.
1. Flow Rate of Circulation System: This is the
most important calculation for all aspects of the
circulation system. If an operating flow meter is
installed, no problem! If not, we can determine the
flow rate needed to turn over the pool water in a
given time frame.
commercial pools, flow rate is dictated by local
codes. Also, manufacturers have recommended
flow rate parameters. The NSF Standards are
below for each type of filter.
High Rate Sand Filters = 5-20 GPM/ft2 (15
GPM/ft2 is a common standard)
Cartridge = 0.375 GPM/ft2
D.E. = 2 GPM/ft2
Below is an example of sizing a sand filter
using the conditions from #1 above.
Formula: Flow Rate ÷ Filter Media Rate =
Filter ft2
For this example, the Sand Filter ft2 would
need to be 9.27 ft2 for 15GPM/ft2 FMR.
The simple calculations above will make the world
of difference in the overall efficiency and operation
of the swimming pool circulation system. More
importantly, it is one of the steps to ensure safe and
clean swimming pool water for the bathers.
**Always verify with the Local Health Department and/or enforcement agencies. Examples are
not implied to be compliant with all codes and regulations throughout the U.S.
Example:
Pool Gallons = 50,000 gallons with a required
6-hour turnover rate. Formula to determine
flowrate is expressed: Gallons ÷ Turnover Rate ÷
60 = Flow Rate Needed (GPM).
For this example, 50,000 gallon pool will require
a 139 gallons per minute (GPM) for a 6-hour
turnover rate. It is also wise to verify that the
pump currently installed is producing the needed
flow rate.

time can still register and access the full recorded

Online Training Courses
Online courses are taught through a combination
of interactive slides, presentations, and technical

course help to reinforce the knowledge gained and
allow a participant to track his or her own progress.
As with the in-person training, attendees to the
online courses earn course completion certificates
that can be applied to APSP credits.
Videos
Pool professionals may also access a comprehensive
library of videos with detailed instruction on
installation and troubleshooting techniques. Each
video is only 2-3 minutes long, making them easy to
view while on the job.
