gradnews December 2009 Graduate Programs, Faculty of Education From the Director End of semester, end of year . . . days seem endlessly wet and grey. The dreaded flu season lingers on. Exams, final papers, scholarship applications . . . the academy marches on. Nerves fray, stress mounts, fatigue sets in, and enthusiasm wanes. Two basic modes of coping with stress: reaching out and reaching in. If we do both, it seems we would double the coping efficacy. Reaching out to our community, we give and receive support. Reaching in, we connect with the core strength of who we are as a person. Isn’t this double gesture of reaching out and reaching in, exactly the traditional message for this time of the year? Only connect, within and without. I wish you all a glorious season of greetings, celebrations, festivities, friendship, affection, and renewal; and lettinggo of all that holds us back from being fully open to life and all its gifts. Yours . . . descending into December, Heesoon Seasons Greetings from the staff in the Graduate Programs office contents from the director........................1 scholarships...............................2 program highlights....................3 people in the news.....................4 student news...........................5-7 convocation...........................8-11 December 2009 2 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDEES scholarships Pacfic Century Graduate Entrance Scholarships Sean Park - PhD Curriculum Theory & Instruction Philosophy Presidents Research Stipend $6250 (Summer 2009) Richard Laszlo Armando Preciado Olga Shipulina Melanie Young Nicholas Zaparytniuk (Fall 2009) Melania Alvarez-Adem Marco Espinoza Phong Kuoch Rob McTavish Amie Wolf Williamson Entrance Graduate Fellow- Graduate Fellowships 2009/2010 $6250 Gabriela Alonso-Yanez Mahboubeh Asgari Susan Barber Colleen Bell Christian Berneche June Birch Michael Caulkins Rosa Chen Tom Culham Mary Perez-Dingler Sadie Donovan Rylan Egan George Ekol Shiva Gol Tabaghi Sheryl Guloy Elena Halmaghi Veronica Hotton Yuija Jiang Peter Kovacs Kristi Lauridsen Jerry Li Jodi MacQuarrie Robert Manery Paulina Semenec-Michalak – MA – C&I Foundations Elena Hadjipieri – PhD – Arts Education Kevin Wells – PhD – Math Education Greg Hum – PhD – Educational Technology & Learning Design Catherine Lisimaque – MA – C&I French Education Brian Eaton – MSc – C&I Math Kristie McCann – MA – Counselling Psychology Susan Oesterle Johanne Provencal Kathryn Ricketts Cristina Ruiz Echeverry Lonny Saltel Raj Sanghera Catherine Shaw Gillian Smith Natasa Sirotic Brian Storey Seanna Takacs Nicole Thibault Kurt Thumlert Irina Tzoneva Zuzana Vasko Shu-Hwa Wu Paul Yeung Melanie Young Nicholas Zaparyniuk International Programs Myung Doek (Carol) Suhr Nipaporn Tangtorrith December Educational Technology and Learning Design The Faculty offers two graduate programs in Educational Technology and Learning Design: A Masters program with both thesis and non-thesis options, and a PhD program. The Masters program in Educational Technology and Learning Design is taught at SFU Surrey. It serves professionals from a broad range of backgrounds, including career teachers, corporate trainers, postsecondary IT and learning and instructional support personnel, and aspiring researchers. For the convenience of those working full time, classes meet from 4:30pm to 8:30pm (courses are 4 credits each). For those who are not working or have reduced loads, two core courses in the program are scheduled each semester. In up-to-date lab facilities at SFU Surrey, students’ course work combines current academic research with hands-on training in the use of popular tools for web and multimedia development, including Adobe Dreamweaver and Flash. In each course, students develop a major project that provides opportunity to apply course concepts to their professional work. Most Masters courses in Ed Tech and Learning Design are taught in “mixed mode”, meaning that online discussions are held between weekly class meetings. Since many students are interested in understanding distance learning, some of the courses hold fully online meetings once or twice per term. These experiences are later debriefed face-to-face. This combination allows students to experience distance learning while retaining the benefits of a face-to-face cohort program. Once each semester, Masters students and faculty work together to organize a Program Institute, which brings all current Masters students to campus on a Friday evening. Recent Institutes have included a mock thesis defense, a sharing session in which students discussed elective courses they have taken, and a “homecoming” session in which graduates returned to talk about their new jobs, and how they are using the skills and knowledge they gained in the program. The PhD program in Educational Technology and Learning Design is offered at the Burnaby campus. It is designed to develop skilled researchers whose work is grounded in, and contributes to our growing scholarly understanding of the promises and challenges associated with the design and use of media-rich learning experiences across the lifespan. The program, which will soon make its fourth annual intake, serves students of widely varied backgrounds and career tracks, including postsecondary instructors and instructional development personnel, commercial instructional designers, research analysts, aspiring faculty members, and others. Since most students in the program are part-time, the faculty are concerned with maintaining cohesion in the PhD cohort. This is accomplished in part through bi-monthly potluck get-togethers, held at faculty members’ homes. These gatherings have varied agendas, which have included “fireside chats” about careers in the field, collegial reviews of draft writings by students and faculty, and information sessions about the process of completing the PhD. One of the exciting and rewarding things about being part of these programs is the collective energy of many people, who are inspired by the same possibilities yet informed by such widely varying life experiences and educational backgrounds. For faculty and students alike, ongoing challenge and growth provide the basis for our learning community. Faculty currently associated with the Educational Technology and Learning Design programs are: Cheryl Amundsen David Kaufman John Nesbit Kevin O’Neill (PhD coordinator) Phil Winne Alyssa Wise (Masters coordinator) 4 June2009 2008 April 2008 December 64 flavours peoplefaculty in thestudent news news s Congratulations! Jillianne Code (PhD Educational Psychology student) recently won a Graduate Student Research award from the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Studying and Self-Regulated Learning Special Interest Group (SSRL SIG) for her research “Validating the Epistemic Belief Inventory Using Item Response Theory “ at the annual meeting in April 2009. Mahboubeh Asgari (PhD Curriculum Theory and Implementation) recently represented SFU by presenting a paper at the 23rd AAOUAssociation of Open Universities - Annual Conference in Tehran, Iran (her native country) from November 3 -5, 2009. There were 146 accepted papers, and six of them were selected to be finalists by AAOU for the best paper award. Mahboubeh submitted the paper “Students’ Evaluation of Success in an Online Mentoring Program” and was chosen as one of the finalists. At the closing ceremony of the conference, she received the silver medal from the president of AAOu and a certificate from the Minister of Culture and Islamic guidance of Iran. Mahboubeh’s paper was based on Tracking Canada’s Past project, an online mentoring program directed by Dr. Kevin O’Neill. News from international programs "In the mid-80’s, the Universitas Terbuka (UT), Indonesia’s first distance education University, and the Faculty of Education (FoE) at Simon Fraser University, Canada, initiated a graduate program at SFU for Indonesian students. Dr. Pak Setijati and Dr. John Ellis of UT and SFU respectively, designed and coordinated a Masters graduate program for administrators, instructors and teacher education practitioners who worked and/or studied at UT. Many of these UT Masters graduates are now senior administrators and academics with UT. This Spring 2010, International and Graduate Programs in the Faculty of Education are again welcoming administrators and educators from UT, this time for a doctoral degree. This graduate program seeks to encourage curriculum development and leadership to meet the national needs of Indonesia and to attend to the local cultural needs of inclusion and diversity in the country. As we understand it, the goal for this doctoral program stems both from the social and educational priorities in the country and also from the desire to support the initiatives made by the UT. This project also draws together and builds upon the activity currently underway by other universities in Indonesia and other groups attempting to address graduate programming through UT. The need to modernize the teaching of basic subjects in secondary schools and universities also provides an impetus for this project to use distance education to partly deliver these programs through Universitas Terbuka in various regions of Indonesia." December 2009 6 student news EWOB 2009 The annual Education With/Out Borders Symposium took place at its usual venue of Sasamat Outdoor Center on the edge of the gorgeous Sasamat Lake in Belcarra Park, Port Moody, on October 23 to 25th. A total of 22 presentations were delivered covering a wide range of topics. These included aspects of art education, teacher inquiry and experience, international aspects that incorporated Cambodia, philosophy, embodiment, literacy, and the outdoors to name a few. The whole event took off with an inspirational opening address called ‘Leading for Educational Change’ by the new Dean of the Faculty, Dr Kris Magnusson. His presentation set the tone for the rest of the symposium. As usual there were individual, collaborative and joint presentations between faculty and graduate students. There were also workshops and discussion groups that tested ideas being explored and work already carried out. Additionally, it was good to see new friendships being made between graduate students. There was an interesting range of discussions that took place at the Philosophers Café event on Friday evening. The panel discussion on Sunday morning lasted for more than two hours and proved extremely useful and covered future EWOB themes and formats. There was also a chance to socialize and ‘just hang out’ in the breath taking scenery. All in all, EWOB 2009 lived up to its aims and provided new, more experienced graduate students and faculty a chance to interact with each other and exchange ideas. A special thank you needs to go out to everyone that attended, presented, organized and supported EWOB 2009 from behind the scenes. These include the Dean’s office, Graduate Programs office, International Programs office, EGSA and of course the EWOB 2009 Organizing Committee. The date for next years EWOB has been tentatively set for October 22-24, 2010, so please mark your calendars. More details to follow soon. See you there!!
