Principal’s Message
Show Case Evening, Interim Report Cards, Basketball playoffs, Grad Photos, Grade 10 Personal
Project Exhibition, Programme Planning, 24 Without, Anti-bullying Day and Night of the Notables; it’s a
busy time of year.
Even though we have only four months to go, we’re in the midst of planning for the next school year.
We have made visits to all the Grade 7 students in our feeder schools. Students at Boyd have met
with counsellors to consider course selections and we’ve had a chance to speak to parents at our
Program Planning evening on February 24th. Students will be asked to enter their course choices at
school in the computer lab with the help of the counsellors and Vice Principals. Student choices are
what drive our timetable process. Please make sure you consider not only graduation requirements,
but also post-secondary requirements. If you have any questions at all, please contact our counsellors,
Ms. Matson and Mr. Hamilton
A special thanks to all of the parents and students who came out to support our Show Case Night on
February 3rd. For those of you that were here, I am sure you noticed the excitement and high energy
of the students as they demonstrated their learning. Music, Art, Incentive, MYP, ELL etc. etc. it was a
busy night.
Congratulations to all the Grade 10’s who presented their projects at the MYP Personal Project
Exhibition on February 10. We are very proud of their accomplishments. I know the students worked
hard and were feeling satisfied as staff, students and visitors expressed their compliments. Students
in Grades 8 and 9 visited the displays during the day and parents and guests came by in the evening.
th
February 25 will be the Night of the Notables. The students in the Grade 8 Incentive class will be
taking on the persona of a famous person for the evening. Please come out and see the students in
character starting at 7:00 pm.
Congratulations are in order, also, to our students and staff in Athletics. Basketball season is ending,
and boys volleyball, girls soccer, golf, track and field and badminton are coming up.
Please remember that Spring Break starts on Friday March 11th and ends on Monday28th.
Sincerely,
Ms. B. Raynor

Scholarship Applications
Students interested in applying for in-school scholarships are
reminded that applications are due to Ms. Vaughan by March
7th.
Application forms are available from Ms. Vaughan.
Graduation Transition Program
We are over halfway through the school year and our
grade 12's minds are beginning to focus on the things
awaiting them when they finish here at Hugh Boyd. Less
than 25% of our grade 12’s are currently eligible to
receive their certificate.
Please speak with your son or daughter regarding their
progress. Many post secondary institutions are
beginning their registration processes in the next little
while and it would be a terrible shame for our students to
forfeit their placements because they have not finished
this simple graduation requirement. Students should
have all of their work submitted to, and checked by Ms.
Raynor prior to June.
If any student or parent has any questions regarding the
requirements please do not hesitate to contact her at the
school.
Thanks to the Junior Band, Senior Band,
and Second Line Band for their excellent
performances at Showcase Night earlier
this month. The Second Line Band got
their photo in the digital version of the
th
February 17 issue of The Richmond
News highlighting their February 12th
performance at Gilmore Park Church’s
Dream Catchers concert. The band really
infused the event with their funky grooves
and feel good spirit.
Our UBC Teacher Candidate, Mr. Yi, has
steadily been increasing his teaching load
and has been enjoying working with both
Band classes.

MYP Reporting
Notice for all Grade 8 – 10 Parents
Term 2 will not only report overall grades, but it will also report MYP levels for each subject. Each course will include
marks for all 8 subject areas according to the IB MYP Criteria. Each course has four Criteria, each with a level out of 8.
Please note, that the level out of 8 is in reference to IB rubrics, and should not be considered as a direct percentage. For
example, an achieved level 4 out of 8 is not 50%. Levels must be read in conjunction with the course rubrics. If students
do not have copies of these rubrics, you can find copies on our website, or paper copies are available at the office.
IB reporting is an excellent and authentic way to gauge the skill level and level of understanding a student has in a given
subject area, but it is different from what you may be used to.
There will be a meeting to explain IB assessment on April 7th at 5:30 in the school library. Please join us to go over what
the criteria means, and how the marks translate to your child’s progress to date.
Parent-Teacher Conferences and MYP
Parent-Teacher conferences are a great opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with the Middle Year’s Programme
objectives with your child’s classroom teachers.
We encourage you to bring your Ministry and MYP marks to discuss your child’s progress thus far.
MYP Parent Steering Committee
The IB MYP Parent Steering Committee will meet on April 7th at 5:00. This committee comprises of parents, MYP
Coordinators and administration. Its purpose is to allow regular parent-school communication, and provides a platform
through which parents can offer their hopes, opinions and vision regarding the Middle Years Programme at Hugh Boyd.
New members are welcome! Please join us in the library on April 7th at 5:00pm. This meeting will be followed by the
Assessment Meeting at 5:30, for those interested.
MYP Certification
At the end of the grade 10 year, students will be given an IB MYP Certificate to indicate their participation and/or progress
within the IB Middle Year’s Programme. Student certificates will vary depending on the participation in and achievement in
the programme. The following outlines how the distribution of certificates will be determined:
Completion with Distinction
Students have completed the requirements of the program and have achieved the following:




Completion
Completion of all subjects with a minimum of 5 on the MYP Grading Scale in each required
discipline
Completion of a minimum 30 service hours
Completion of the Personal Project with a minimum of 5 on the MYP Grading Scale
Completion of the Interdisciplinary Unit in grades 8, 9 and 10
Students have completed the requirement of the program and have achieved the following:




Completion of all subjects with a minimum of 2 on the MYP Grading Scale in each required
discipline
Completion of the Personal Project with a minimum of 2 on the MYP Grading Scale
Completion of a minimum of 30 service hours
Completion of the Interdisciplinary Unit in grades 8, 9 and 10
Participation

by IB for various reasons which may include, but not limited to:

New from The Richmond Curling Club
A young up-and-coming rink from the Richmond Curling Club is looking forward to the opportunity of competing against other top
juvenile teams from around the province at the B.C. Winter Games in Penticton.
Led by Gabriel K., our Grade 9 Hugh Boyd student, the RCC team earned a trip to the Okanagan by winning last month’s Zone
5 Playdowns in Squamish, defeating a rink from the Howe Sound Curling Club. All of the team members are passionate about
curling, and excited to compete at the provincial level for the first time. Gabriel has been curling for four to six years, and started
to get more serious about competing last year when his team came in second in the regional playdowns, with a slightly different
line-up. This season, they have stepped up their attendance at curling camps, bonspiels, the Optimist Junior Interclub Curling
League and practices to prepare for competition. The team is also very active volunteering in the community and at their club,
including last year’s B.C. Wheelchair Curling Championships.
The Richmond rink will be up against six other Zone champions at the B.C. Winter Games which run from Feb. 25-28.
