INTRODUCTION
Courses for Schools programme
Open Polytechnic provides quality vocational and higher education qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework
(NQF) to senior secondary school students.
Studying with Open Polytechnic offers many benefits.
✓
Individual learning options can be catered for through a wide variety of courses, with no requirement for minimum
student numbers.
✓
Students can enrol in lower level courses throughout the year, within the school contract period. Other courses require
enrolment in a trimester. Course information will indicate if the course is trimesterised.
✓
Learning is easily coordinated by the school and Open Polytechnic, and for most courses there is no need for the
students to be transported anywhere.
✓
Students can study Open Polytechnic courses independently, and are encouraged to use tutor support.
✓
Many Open Polytechnic school courses staircase into tertiary study options with Open Polytechnic or other tertiary
providers. This means students can continue with their studies whether they remain at school or enter the workforce
and want to continue study.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Terms and conditions
School leavers
We invite you to complete the Contract with Schools
letter and return it us. We cannot accept an application
for enrolment until we have received that letter. It doesn't
mean you are obliged to enrol students.
Please notify
enrolmentservices@openpolytechnic.ac.nz
if your student leaves school part way through a course
of study with Open Polytechnic.
Enrolment
Unless otherwise stated in the course descriptions,
students may enrol at any time of the year. An
Application for Enrolment form needs to be completed
for each student. This form is available to download from
openpolytechnic.ac.nz/coursesforschools
Payments
To ensure enrolments are processed quickly and efficiently,
a corporate account will need to be established for your
school. Accounts will be forwarded the month following
enrolment. For further information on corporate accounts,
call us on 0508 650 200.
Note: The student may complete their course, even
if they leave school.
Mentoring
Our learning packages and tutorial support provide the
basis of a sound learning opportunity for students.
However, we have found that additional support from
parents, school staff and other students is important to
help students complete their course work. We encourage
you to provide general guidance and supervision during
their studies.
Textbooks
Monitoring and reporting
During the year we will report regularly on student progress
to help you identify any students who may need additional
help to complete their courses. We suggest you use
Appendix 1 to keep track of your students. Under the
terms and conditions of enrolment, teachers have the right
to read correspondence addressed to students from
Open Polytechnic tutors to monitor their progress
and help them complete their study. We recommend
you let your students know that you will be reading
such correspondence, and why. We will channel all
correspondence through your school.
Students may need to buy set texts. The course
information will include information about texts. Set text
listings are available on our website.
We have contracted the supply of set texts to Tertiary
Texts, a division of the Victoria University Book Centre.
Go to vicbooks.co.nz
Book orders and payment should be directed to
Tertiary Texts. Please do not forward payment to
Open Polytechnic.
Note: The supply and price of textbooks is
dependent on suppliers and publishers and subject
to change.
Students enrolled in open courses will have assessment
due dates. We strongly recommend you monitor their
progress over the school year to make sure your students
are on track to complete their course(s). We will continue to
send reports until the study period is finished.
Access to Open Polytechnic library
NZQA reporting
Each student enrolled with us can use our library. Group
access can also be arranged. For more information call

SERVICES OFFERED
Joint delivery
We work with schools to jointly provide school students with the opportunity to earn unit standards.
Under this arrangement, Open Polytechnic enrols the students and moderates their study. Teachers qualified to NZQA
requirements are used as our tutors to provide learning support for the written materials provided and to undertake
assessment activities in keeping with accredited polytechnic practices.
This works particularly well for schools who have specialist teachers to teach non-conventional subjects to classes of 10 or
more, when the school does not wish to become accredited in those subjects.
To provide this service, the school must meet Open Polytechnic’s quality systems and accreditation requirements. This
includes having the teachers approved by Open Polytechnic. We ask for submission of CVs and suitable references, so that
we can ensure that the teachers are qualified to the level determined for the courses they are teaching. Usually a qualification
higher than the level that they are teaching is required and, in some subjects, industry experience is necessary.
Once a teacher has been approved to teach our courses, a contract between Open Polytechnic and the school is drawn up.
This contract names the person who will teach and assess the course. The contract is only valid for as long as the teacher
named is doing the teaching and assessing.
Please begin the process of having teachers approved well before you have classes ready to start work. Approval is not
automatic and we want to ensure you have time to make alternative arrangements if necessary.
Individual enrolments
We offer full distance learning services for individual students. This includes all tutoring and assessing, and providing
students with ongoing support. This means you can greatly widen the choices you offer students, with subjects spanning
Levels 1– 5 on the NQF.
5
INDIVIDUAL UNIT STANDARDS
We have made individual unit standards available in all areas where there are no restrictions, such as being included in an
industry specified course.
This is so you have greater flexibility to work out study requirements that will suit individual students. You can use individual
unit standards to build individual study plans to suit a student's interests and ability.
You can reduce administration by planning a course at the beginning of the year, and enrolling each student in several unit
standards at once. This way, only students who complete their course faster than expected will need to re-enrol.
The pathways in which individual study options can be built from stand-alone unit standards are as follows:
Social and Community Services
· Early Childhood Education
Manufacturing and Technology
· Electrical Engineering
· Mechanical Engineering
Primary Industries
· Horticulture

achievement of course 2.
Admission criteria: It is desirable that students work through the three courses in the order on page 10.
You will need to organise and monitor suitable early childhood service situations for your students. Students working with
children must be supervised. We will not accept any responsibility for the safety of your students or the children placed in
their care. You must sign an agreement to the above conditions before we will enrol your students.
Student entry on each course is dependent on a character attestation from the school principal for students under 17 years
of age, or a satisfactory police check for students aged 17 and over. See page 19 for more information.
Purpose: To give students the basic skills and knowledge required for working with children, parents, families and whänau
in a variety of early childhood settings.

APPENDIX 1: KEEPING TRACK OF YOUR STUDENTS
We recommend you use the sheet overleaf as a tracking device for your students studying with us.
We advise schools to note the:
· name of students and units/courses in which they are enrolled
· date that work was given to students
· date that completed work is posted to Open Polytechnic, (we suggest that students hand work to their teachers who
actually post that work)
· date marked work is returned to students and whether students are competent [C] or not yet competent [NYC] in unit
standards, and whether they passed their course.
Please photocopy this form for large numbers of students, or for each student if doing a large number of courses.
Alternatively you may wish to keep track of your students electronically. If you wish to do so please email the STAR/Gateway
Coordinator at coursesforschools@openpolytechnic.ac.nz or phone 0508 227 000. We will then email a copy to you.
