Application
The AM12 from Lightalarms is a UL Listed fluorescent emergency ballast that allows the same fixture
to be used for both normal and emergency operation. In the event of a power failure, the AM12 switches to the emergency mode
and operates one or two of the existing lamps for 90 minutes. The unit contains a battery, charger and inverter circuit in a single
can, and can be mounted in the wireway or on top of the fixture. The AM12 can be used with most 2’-8’ lamps, with a total initial
output of up to 1400 lumens for one or two lamps and features lamp selector leads for optimizing light output for the designated
lamp type.

GENERAL: The contractor shall install the Lightalarms model
AM12 consisting of a single, sealed housing compartment
containing the battery, battery charger, transfer circuit, and
high frequency inverter. A pilot light and test switch shall
be provided. A wire end cap is utilized when the AM12 is
externally mounted. Input power shall be 120/277Vac, 60Hz.
BATTERY: The Lightalarms model AM12 shall be provided
with a sealed, maintenance-free, high temperature NickelCadmium battery with a design life of 7 years.
COMPATIBLE LAMP TYPES: The AM12 shall cold start
and operate most 2’-8’ single, bi-pin T8 & T12 HO and VHO
fluorescent lamps including long compacts and 2’-4’ 14W to
54W T5 lamps. Emergency operation capabilities of the AM12
shall be (1) 2’-8’ or (2) 2’-4’ for a minimum of 90 minutes. Only
one (1) long compact fluorescent lamp may be operated in
the emergency mode.

INVERTER-CHARGER-TRANSFER-CIRCUIT: The inverter
circuit shall be of solid state design capable of supplying an
initial lumen output of (1) lamp 1400 lumens (2) lamps 700
lumens each lamp. Charging shall be fully automatic by
means of a constant current type charger. The charging circuit
shall recharge the batteries in accordance with the requirements of UL 924. A sealed, dust-tight transfer relay shall automatically and instantaneously transfer the inverted battery
voltage to power the designated lamps.
ALTERNATE CONSTRUCTION: The contractor may supply
the AM12-DL unit, listed for damp locations, according to the
spec.
