Technology is Compulsory to Year 10
•  The NZC page 43, "In years 1-10, schools are
required to provide teaching and learning in
English, the arts, health and physical
education, mathematics and statistics,
science, the social sciences and technology.”
•  "Is required to provide" = have to "take”
•  The are core areas of achievement
•  Part of the NEG's and link to the charter
requirements.
•  Programmes based on the technology and arts
learning areas are no more "optional" than
mathematics and English programmes in
years 1-10.
Legal advisor's response
•  "I had always looked on the gazetted
curriculum statements as the core
curriculum. The expectation is that all students
will have some of each of these. I am not sure
why Technology is singled out here as any
argument that applies to Technology equally
applies to English, Science and Maths."
•  “…there are some schools that say while they
offer these so called optional courses to their
students, if the students "choose" not to take
them this is okay and there is no pressure to
encourage all students to participate. In my
view this approach does not meet the intent of
the regulations.”
Latest research: Technological
Literacy
Teachers must work together to ensure
programme success from year 1-10 – sharing
expertise and building a coherent view of
technology.
•  1995 doc allowed a single teacher to say work
alone. Not possible to do it now. Collaboration
•  Teachers should collectively collect work at
different levels.
