What’s in a Name?
When referring to the university, please use “Cal Poly” only. We are
NOT Cal Poly SLO or Cal Poly San Luis Obispo or Cal State Poly or any
other derivative -- just Cal Poly. No hyphen. The NCAA agreed to delete
“SLO” and “San Luis Obispo” in 1994 and has used just Cal Poly in all
statistics, releases and record books since then.
Health a Big Concern for Mustangs in 2009
A
rmed with five returning position starters, seven pitchers and three
more players who missed the 2008 season due to injury, Cal Poly
seeks to return to its winning ways in the 2009 baseball season.
Cal Poly will open the 2009 campaign against 2003 national
champion Rice with 18 returning lettermen, a dozen newcomers and four other
players who were redshirts, including pitchers Matt Leonard and Frankie Reed
along with infielder Adam Buschini, all of whom sat out the 2008 season with
elbow injuries.
"We're still trying to battle through some injuries that have existed since the
2007 campaign," said seventh-year Mustang head coach Larry Lee. "If we can
get everybody back healthy on the field, we have a chance to be a real solid
baseball team in a lot of different facets."
Among the holes to fill are four positions vacated by players who were drafted and signed last June by Major League clubs. Third baseman Brent Morel
(White Sox) and outfielder Logan Schafer (Brewers) were third-round selections
while six other Mustangs were drafted on the second day.
Pitchers Derrick Saito and Brian Grening signed, but the other four -- pitchers
Kevin Castner, Jared Eskew and DJ Mauldin along with outfielder/designated
Luke Yoder hit
.345 as a sophomore a year ago
with 13 doubles,
eight home runs
and 33 RBIs. He
was drafted by
the Minnesota
Twins in the 33rd
round, but elected to return to
Cal Poly for the
2009 campaign.
hitter Luke Yoder -- are back with the Mustangs for 2009.
Eskew, a southpaw, and Mauldin and Steven Fischback, both right-handers,
form a strong nucleus of returning pitchers.
Mauldin, used primarily in relief a year ago, posted a 5-5 mark and 4.08 ERA
with four saves while Eskew, who joined the starting rotation midway through
the 2008 season, was 5-4 with a 4.11 ERA. Fischback, the Friday night starter in
2008, compiled a 5-4 mark and 4.55 ERA.
Righty Eric Massingham, who started 13 games last spring, was 2-5 with a
5.86 ERA but could be the team's closer next spring, battling Castner for the job.
Castner, 1-2 with a 5.46 ERA and one save a year ago, is recovering from offseason elbow surgery to remove bone spurs.
Leonard, another left-hander, was 3-5 with a 5.85 ERA during his freshman
season in 2007.
Filling out a strong group vying for three starting nods on the weekends is
freshman right-hander Mason Radeke from Santa Barbara High School.
Topping the candidates of middle relievers out of the bullpen are returnees
Mark DeVincenzi and Buster Mueller, both right-handers, along with Reed, a
southpaw and another pitcher who underwent elbow surgery last spring.
Yoder, who hit .345 with eight home runs and 33 RBIs, primarily as Cal
Poly's designated hitter a year ago, heads the list of returning position starters
and likely will start in left field in 2009.
Junior Adam Melker, a .314 hitter in 2008, moves from left field to right
while senior Ryan Lee, a .357 hitter with a team-leading 13 stolen bases, moves
from right to center to replace Schafer.
Other candidates in the outfield are senior Phil Ortez and sophomores DJ
Gentile and Ricky Rossman. Gentile leads the group as far as a potential designated hitter.
Buschini, a .294 hitter in 2007 before his elbow injury sidelined him for the
entire 2008 season, will move from first base to third, replacing Morel.
That leaves first base to junior Wes Dorrell,
a left-handed hitter with a .304 average, five
home runs and 54 RBIs in 2008. Dorrell also
was used as a catcher and designated hitter a
year ago.
Kyle Smith returns for his junior season at
shortstop, though he is still recovering from an
offseason wrist operation. Smith hit .250 with
nine doubles, a pair of home runs and 27 RBIs
despite missing 11 games due to the injury.
Second base is open with the graduation of
Pat Pezet, but freshman Matt Jensen from
Clovis East High School has looked strong in
early practice sessions and is the leading candidate.
Another returning infielder is sophomore
J.J. Thompson, who hit .211 with four doubles, two home runs and 11 RBIs in 34 games
a year ago.
Catcher Josh Thomas completed his eligiibility a year ago and the backstop position
has four candidates, led by junior Ross
Brayton, a transfer from Modesto College, and
freshman Jordan Hadlock from Douglas High
School in Gardnerville, NV.
Also in the mix are Dorrell and returnee
Justin Hensley, who played 28 games a year
ago and finished with a .162 average.
"If we stay healthy, we could be solid
offensively and defensively," said Lee, 186154-2 in his previous six seasons at the helm
of the Mustang program after 16 seasons as
head coach at nearby Cuesta College.
"Our pitching is strong at the top, but we
Steven Fischback, Cal
will need more quality out of our bullpen in
Poly’s Sunday starter as
order to be successful," Lee added.
a sophomore, may move
Cal Poly has had 13 players selected in the
first 10 rounds of the last five drafts (2004-08) to the Friday night slot
and a total of 21 players drafted overall. Three in 2009 after posting a

with Major League organizations and three
more signed deals with independent league teams.
A year ago, Cal Poly went into a 2-10 slide after a 7-7 start and never fully
recovered. The Mustangs managed to climb within one win of the .500 mark
with a stretch of 13 wins in 19 games, but lost nine of 10 after sweeping UNLV
in early May and finished 24-32, the exact opposite of the program's 2007 mark.
Cal Poly was 2-9 in the 11 games without Smith in the lineup, including a 1-5
start in the Big West.
“Not having Smith in there to solidify our defense hurt us,” said Lee. “We
didn't live up to our expectations defensively and the absence of Smith resulted
in a noticeable dropoff on defense.”
Despite having six hitters finishing above the .300 mark a year ago en route to
a .298 team batting average, Cal Poly hit just .283 in Big West games en route to
an 8-16 mark, tied for seventh place with Cal State Northridge.
Three Mustang pitchers earned five victories each -- Mauldin, Fischback and
Eskew -- well behind the 11 wins by Thomas Eager in 2007 and 12 by Garrett
Olson in 2005.
“We improved noticeably on the pitching end in the last third of the season,
getting quality innings from Fischback, Mauldin, Eskew and Grening,” said Lee,
“but we failed to put all facets of the game together at the same time for any
length of time."
Cal Poly's longest winning streak of the 2008 season was just four games
(accomplished twice) and Mustang pitchers did not produce a shutout in a season
for the first time since moving to Division I in 1995.
Cal Poly had the lead in 24 of the 32 losses but the pitching staff could not
hold onto them. In addition, the Mustangs scored in 172 innings this season, only
to give up runs to the opposition in the next half-inning 66 times (40 percent).
Eleven of the Mustangs' opponents in 2008 qualified for the NCAA regionals.
Cal Poly was 12-17 against those schools, including 3-2 against Fresno State and
2-1 against both Alabama and UC Davis.
This year's schedule includes 2003 national champion Rice (Feb. 20-22) and
four-time College World Series champion Cal State Fullerton (May 8-10, both
three-game series to be played in Baggett Stadium.
Cal Poly also plays five games against Pac-10 schools -- a three-game series
at Cal (March 13-15) and a pair of single games against USC (March 31 at
Baggett Stadium and May 5 at Dedeaux Field).
The two games against the Trojans are among 13 midweek games the
Mustangs will play this season.
Cal Poly's other three-game series at home will be against Sacramento State,
Cal State Northridge, UC Davis, San Francisco and UC Riverside
The Mustangs open Big West play at UC Irvine (March 27-29) and wrap up
the 2009 season at home against UC Riverside (May 22-24).
