Foundation to continue PVM’s innovative approach to senior living at Rivertown
Neighborhood in Detroit with expanded housing, care and lifestyle amenities.

This year’s Village Victory Cup was one for the books! On June 27th, 200 residents from 11 Villages and an astounding 70 volunteers converged at Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac for this annual event.
Each Village came with their game faces on ready to compete. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and friendly competition. It was quite a sight to see so many smiling and happy faces!
As the day progressed, it became apparent that it was going to be a battle between The Village of Westland, the defending champs, and The Village of East
Harbor. It came down to the last event to determine the victor. In the end, the Pirates of East Harbor won, beating the Westland Stars by only 2 points!
This year the Monarchs from The Village of Our
Saviour’s Manor won the Spirit Award and rightly so.
A small but mighty crew of residents pulled out all the stops, including having their own soundtrack!
Not to be left out, Villages 100 miles or further from the PVM Home Office competed in the Virtual Village
Victory Cup. The Village of Spring Meadows I & II were in it to win. When the dust settled, Spring Meadows I emerged victorious. Perry Farm Village took home the
Spirit Award with their clever video showcasing their residents competing and cheering each other on to victory.
For those who like to plan ahead, mark your calendars for June 26, 2015. That’s the date for next year’s
Village Victory Cup. You won’t want to miss out!

Since starting out as the “Presbyterian Home for the Aged” in 1945, Presbyterian Villages of
Michigan has continuously grown and changed.
Over the years, the name, “modifiers” and graphic identity have been altered to reflect strategies, accomplishments and goals. It is time for another change. The new branding statement on the PVM logo now reads “Serving
Seniors & Communities.” This phrase better reflects all the things PVM does and the spirit in which we do them. It also frames the conversation for future undertakings.
PVM is becoming more than a provider of traditional housing and institutional care for seniors. The expanded scope includes innovative partnerships with regional health care systems, academic institutions and other organizations that serve seniors. The Strategic Goals for PVM state, “Our commitment to service excellence and delivering ever-improving value to our customers is a key priority in all facets of
PVM’s system-wide accommodations, services, program, care and relationships.”
The Center for Senior Independence (CSI) is one example. PVM joins Henry Ford Health
System in offering Program of All-Inclusive
Care of the Elderly (PACE) in Northwest
Detroit and at Rivertown Neighborhood, with future expansion plans. Community Connections is another example of how PVM is providing services to seniors in non-traditional ways, wherever they choose to live. (Visit www.pvm.

As the spectrum of senior living and services and health care delivery changes, PVM is ready to develop appropriate offerings.
Our origin is in senior housing. We work in communities: the many communities in our Villages and the physical and relationshipbased communities which surround and embrace seniors. We’re making that clear with our new tagline, “Serving Seniors &
Communities.” Watch for the inclusion of the new logo in the coming months with advertising and other communications.
Construction continues for Phase II at Rivertown Neighborhood, with opening scheduled for Fall 2014. The second phase of the project will include 50 one-bedroom affordable independent living senior apartments, as well as amenities such as a common area, fitness center, library and computer lab, and a community café. Meals and services will be available for residents inside their apartments. Interest is high: sales efforts this summer attracted more applicants than can be accommodated.
Rivertown Neighborhood, an Innovative Senior Community, is drawing national and international attention. The project is being developed as a partnership of Presbyterian Villages of Michigan,
United Methodist Retirement Communities (UMRC), Henry Ford Health System and the Center for Senior Independence (CSI). It is one of only two affordable assisted living complexes in the State of Michigan. Phase One opened in April 2013, and included Detroit’s first affordable assisted living with 80 apartments located on the second, third, and fourth floors of the main four-story building.
Also opening in Phase I was a location of the Center for Senior Independence, a Program of
All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) ® . Slated for future development are Green Houses ® , which will provide 24/7 nursing care for low-income seniors in a home-like setting.
PVM developed the first Green House ® homes in Michigan, at The Village of Redford.
When fully completed, Rivertown Neighborhood will be a continuing care retirement community (CCRC) for low-income seniors. “Here, people can still have their own apartment, get the care they need and it’s affordable. And they still have some choices and have privacy and independence. That really responds to what mostly anybody, regardless of income, would really want,” says Roger L. Myers PVM president and CEO.

Villages of Michigan an innovator in programs for seniors. The message was delivered to the
Legislature in a special message on aging during a visit in June to the Older Persons’
Commission in
Rochester, MI.
“All across the state, communities, employers, health care providers and other organizations are working on innovative programs to improve health and wellness. Presbyterian Villages of Michigan is doing just that. In urban suburban and rural communities across the state, PVM is using evidence-based practices to help older adults eat healthier, increase physical activity, reduce their risk of falling and better manage chronic health conditions. Through its Village

SAVE’s International Elder Abuse Awareness
Day not only focuses on challenging issues, but it also pays tribute to stakeholders who have truly made a difference in the lives of older adults within our community. That tribute comes in the form of the Sosnick
Courage Awards, which are named after retired Judge Edward Sosnick, a founding
Co-Chair of SAVE.
The Courage to Lead and the Courage to
Speak Awards are presented to individuals and organizations that have actively undertaken a principal role in leading the campaign against elder abuse or that have had the courage to stand up and bravely speak out against elder abuse and neglect. Other awardees included
Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson for the Courage to Lead as an individual;
Toni Wilson, Long-Term Care Ombudsman for the Courage to Speak as an individual; and the Area Agency on Aging 1-B for the Courage to Speak as an organization.

Lynda K. Jeffries, Ph.D. received the prestigious
“Trustee of the Year” award from LeadingAge
Michigan. The award was presented at the
Annual Conference held in Lansing in May.
It recognizes an outstanding member of the governing board of a
LeadingAge of Michigan member organization.
Lynda K. Jeffries, Ph.D.
Dr. Jeffries serves on the PVM board, and was
2013 Board Chair. Past service includes the local village boards for Brush Park Manor Paradise
Valley and Woodbridge Manor, the PVM Governance Committee and corporate board Secretary.
A native Detroiter, Jeffries is actively involved in her community and serves in leadership roles on several nonprofit and faith-based boards and committees.
Jeffries has a Doctoral Degree in Education from
Capella University, a M.B.A. in Management from the University of Detroit Mercy, an Education
Specialist Certificate from Wayne State University and a B.S. in Business Administration from Lawrence
Technological University. She retired from
SBC Communications as external affairs director for South Oakland County. Jeffries is the author of the audio CD, “Overcoming Procrastination,” and co-author of the article, “Increasing Diversity of Leadership in Environmental Nonprofit
Organizations in a Major Brownfield City: Phase 1.”

The Village of East Harbor’s Macomb Academy
School for Daily Living Skill & Employment
Training students were awarded the 2014
Group Volunteer of the Year Award by
LeadingAge Michigan.
The Macomb Academy program teaches and equips special needs students, ages 18-26, to thrive and be successful. They gain work experience in volunteer positions with community businesses.
The award-winning group of students has been serving at The Village of East Harbor since 2009 in the dining services department.
“They are dedicated, encouraging and interactive with the residents,” says Joan Sonnenberg, administrator at East Harbor. “Each student has abilities that benefited the department. They always have a smile on their face and are willing to learn something new. Their coach allows them to blossom and grow, and step outside their comfort zone. We know that having them at East Harbor has allowed us to accomplish so much more for our residents.”
It was standing-room-only at The Village of Redford on April 30, for the introduction of the new affordable Cottages at Redford to the community. More than 500 people went through the doors for the ribbon-cutting of Phase I existing cottage renovations and the groundbreaking for Phase II construction of the new Heatherwood Cottages. They enjoyed refreshments and tours. The event was preceded by the Redford Township Town
Hall meeting, which was open to the public. The combined events and welcoming location ballooned attendance at the community meeting. More than 100 applications were distributed at the event, with a constant stream of follow-up requests.
The Cottages at Redford are located on the campus of The Village of Redford, a continuing care retirement community. Through a tax credit program with income requirements through the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA), affordable cottage homes are now available for seniors 55 and older. A special marketing office is open for the Cottages (313 541-6300), with “Walk-in Wednesday” held from
10 am - 2 pm each week. Prospects receive a special gift for touring the model unit.
The Redford campus also offers
The Villa apartment options along with assisted living, memory care, long-term skilled nursing and rehab services in the Transitional Care Unit.
Residents of the Cottages will have the convenience and peace of mind of living on a continuing care campus. If health care needs ever change, residents of the Cottages have priority access to all of the living arrangements and resources.

Due to the generosity of over 860 donors, the PVM
Foundation raised nearly $200,000 through April and
May to benefit residents from every PVM Village.
The 11th annual Friends & Family Appeal ran through the month of April and raised over $138,000 toward various projects in many of the PVM Villages. A special incentive was offered for Villages who met their fundraising goals.

The 4th annual Inspire Possibilities event was held at The
Hilton Garden Inn in Southfield on May 8th. Three hundred guests attended and donated or pledged over $60,000 to support the
PVM Mission. Residents from The Village of Oakland Woods energized the crowd with a wellness warm-up and resident presenters from The Villages of St. Martha’s, Westland and Brush
Park Manor Paradise Valley all shared their stories and kept the crowd engaged. Michael J. Damone of The Damone Group also shared his story of how his family established the Marie Claire
Damone Fall Prevention Fund at the PVM Foundation in memory of his mother.
The fundraising success this spring would not have been possible without many donors and volunteers. Thank you to each and every one of you who made this possible and who contributed to a better life for so many seniors!

PVM representatives were present at each event with displays and literature about PVM; they answered questions, and talked with attendees about aging and senior housing, programs and service issues.

The General Assembly of the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) brought people from around the world to Detroit in June.
PVM engaged in many ways, including:
• PVM informational booth prominently located at the entrance to the exhibit hall, well-staffed by PVM employees and others, including Board
Chair George Millush;
• Providing supplemental staffing for the
Presbyterians Association of Homes and
Services (PAHSA) booth in the exhibit hall;
• Celebrated Helen Morrison’s special recognition as a “Woman of Faith” at a breakfast event;
• Provided buses to assist in transporting
attendees to worship services on Sunday;
• Hosted a bus tour of the Detroit Riverfront, with stops that included Rivertown Neighborhood.
George Millush and Roger L. Myers served as one of the guides/hosts along with colleagues from UMRC;
• Attended a dinner hosted by the Presbytery of
Detroit’s
Committee on Local
Arrangements
(COLA).

A common area, kitchen, living room, dining room and porch will add to the comfortable setting and give people the opportunity to live or rehabilitate in a home environment. Twenty four-hour nursing care is included.
“Currently the Green House ® care option does not exist for seniors who chose Detroit as their home and need extra assistance,” said Ellen M. Heller, Weinberg
Foundation Board Chair. “We are excited to add
Green Houses ® to the variety of housing and services available at Rivertown. During the last six years, the
Weinberg Foundation has made eight capital grants for Green House ® residences totaling more than
$11 million. The Green House ® initiative complements The Weinberg Foundation’s vision of providing quality of life for low-income seniors.”
In addition to Green Houses ® , PVM’s Phase II expansion will include:
• 50 independent living apartments (opening in Fall 2014)
• A Community Café/Neighborhood Center
• The RiverGarden Park and Garden
“One of our goals with the Café/Neighborhood
Center and outdoor areas is to integrate Rivertown with surrounding neighborhoods, including the nearby Riverwalk, and add to the vibrancy and redevelopment of this area of Detroit,” said Miller.
The current $2 million donation builds upon a
$250,000 grant awarded in March 2012, which assisted with the launch of Phase I of Rivertown.

Communities and Henry Ford Health System, developed Rivertown as the city’s first high quality, affordable assisted living neighborhood for seniors. Rivertown’s Center for Senior Independence
(CSI) Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly
(PACE) is a nationally recognized comprehensive adult daycare and health services program that includes clinical, pharmaceutical and dental services.
Rivertown is projected to add approximately
$350 million in economic impact to the region during the next ten years. “The economic impact of this innovative campus will be felt throughout the entire region, along with creating over 200 well-paying jobs,” said Gloria W. Robinson, who chairs the Rivertown Neighborhood Senior Housing
Board. “The grant from The Weinberg Foundation brings us more than half-way toward achieving our goal of raising $4.4 million needed to ensure this community is available to those most in need,” said PVM Foundation Board of Directors Chair,
Jim Gompers.

The PVM Foundation, in partnership with
The Village of East Harbor and an active
Campaign Steering Committee, have embarked on a $2 million Campaign to build a Health & Wellness Center on The
Village of East Harbor’s campus. Specialized rehabilitation and therapy services will be provided to resident and community seniors with the latest equipment available and highly-trained staff. The 11,000 square foot
Center will also offer general exercise and gym amenities, allowing residents and community seniors to stay healthy and maintain their rehabilitation. The Center will include a therapy pool, exercise room, weight room and specialized exercise equipment for walking, running or riding. This will be the first project of its kind on a senior living campus in Macomb County.
There is a critical need for this type of project in the community. The current rehabilitation space is only 800 square feet, which is challenging for the seniors as well as the staff. The new center will provide
11,000 square feet of space, which will serve more seniors, allow for more effective treatment and provide a more spacious and comfortable atmosphere for therapy and rehabilitation. This state-of-the-art center will enhance the excellent programs and services offered to the residents at The
Village of East Harbor and reach out further to benefit community seniors as well.

The Hartford Village Campaign won a platinum Hermes
Creative Award in the Integrated Marketing Materials category. The Story of PVM, the 2012 Annual Report, won a gold Hermes Creative Award in the Publications/Annual
Report category. The Story of PVM also received a gold
Gallery of Superb Printing award in the Annual Reports category, from the Detroit Club of Printing House Craftsmen.
In the Aster Awards competition, produced in conjunction with “Modern Healthcare” magazine, and honoring excellence in Medical Marketing, the 2013 Accomplishments internal report received a gold award.

In order to better serve low-income seniors in the Harbor Springs Community, the PVM
Foundation, in partnership with The Village of Hillside, the Friendship Center and the community-led Campaign Steering Committee, are in the midst of a $1.5 Million Campaign.
The Village of Hillside Senior Apartments
• The Village of Hillside is the only senior apartment community providing affordable housing in downtown Harbor Springs.
• Apartments at The Village of Hillside no longer meet the needs of today’s seniors because they were built prior to the Americans with
Disabilities Act, and are not accessible to those with disabilities.
Friendship Center of Harbor Springs
• The Friendship Center is a 600 square foot space in the existing Hillside facility that serves seniors, free of charge, from throughout the Harbor Springs area, including the residents of Hillside.
• In 2012, the Friendship Center provided 700 services or activities to Harbor Springs seniors.
63% of these services addressed isolation, 27% were food-based programs or services and 1% provided medical or financial services.
• The Friendship Center of Harbor Springs is limited by space in meeting the needs of area seniors. The square footage of their space would nearly triple to approximately 2,000 square feet, allowing them to serve the growing needs of seniors in the community.
• The Friendship Center is currently at full capacity and is not even able to advertise their resources to seniors. Many seniors think that it is just a place to receive meals and are unaware of the many programs and activities available to enrich their lives. This project will expand the space available to the Friendship Center and allow them to advertise their expanded programming and reach more seniors who may need their services.
The Village of Hillside/Friendship
Center Renewal Campaign features will include:
• Open concept with 32 new, one and two bedroom affordable senior apartments accessible to those with disabilities.
• Large elevator access to all floors.
• Green space to maintain the residential character of the community as well as provide an oasis for residents and their family and visitors, staff and the neighboring community.
• 2,000 square foot common area space for the Friendship Center, including high speed internet access, private medical examination room, accessible computers, multi-media and full kitchen.
How This Project will Impact the
Community
• Provide 32+ seniors the ability to remain in the Harbor Springs community in an accessible and affordable location.
• Increase the overall number of seniors served and services provided by the Friendship
Center annually.
• Enhance services to seniors on the Hillside campus and in the Harbor Springs community through the Friendship Center through an enlarged nutritional program, augmenting health services by creating a private space to conduct critical medical screenings such as blood pressure and podiatry checks, increased participation in transportation services to community events, shopping and medical appointments and other enriching programs to reduce senior isolation and increase community engagement.
