Correlation between Structural and Electronic Properties in Binary Semiconductors
Prof. Dr. Yarub Al-Douri
Background: The empirical concepts, such as electro-negativity, ionicity, and bulk
modulus are very important for studying the basic properties of molecules and solids.
The difficulty in defining the ionicity and bulk modulus lies in transforming a
qualitative or verbal concept into a quantitative, mathematical formula.
My works concentrated on using empirical pseudo-potential method (EPM) to
calculate electronic properties (ionicity factor) ƒ i in terms of the difference between
the first and second valence band at point X, Eg (V 2 -V 1 ), and making various formulas
as a function of transverse effective charge e T *, nearest-neighbor distance d, cohesive
energy E coh , and refractive index n 0 for giving the same ionicity factor.
I had investigated for the structural properties (bulk modulus) B 0 a new models in
terms of the cation part S C of the charge density, the transition pressure P t and the
lattice parameter.
This study has three essential goals:
1. Define the ionicity factor of the chemical bond in the semiconductors ANB8-N
and the bulk modulus of the solids by the electronic band structure and
charge density, respectively.
2. Establish a new scale and compare with others scales.
3. Study the validity of the new models under external effects; pressure,
temperature and spin-orbit.
Proposed work: The proposed work is related to study the physical properties and to
develop the published scales in international journals of electronic and structural
properties using ab initio methods within my presence at your laboratory and to
present other jobs of prediction new structures by studying phase transition. The plan
of work is to modify the models and gives precise calculations of structural, electronic,
and other physical properties in materials by the suggested methods. The resources for
achieving these works are computer of Pentium-IV or workstation with the
collaboration of the team members.
Impact of work: The reasonable and agreement results compared with experimental
and theoretical results are obtained by the proposed methods will impetus us to accept
the fact of idea reality. Theses works will present developed and advanced papers for
the theoretical physics and modern industries for the applied sciences.
