PERSONALITIES
Kota Kayang Museum which is located around Kayang Hill, Lambong Panah Hill
and Menara Hill in Kayang vicinity, the oldest man-made canal in Peninsular
Malaysia. It has a very long and rich history before it finally became a museum in
1991. This 4.84 hectare land which the museum currently stands belonged to Syed
Salim as a gift from Raja Syed Alwi. At the end of 19th century, Syed Salim built his
residence and stayed with his family until it was sold to the state government.
After that, the building becomes the official residence of British Advisors. During
the Japanese occupation, the house became the Military Administration until
1945, where the Thai Military Government took over. After independence, the
government of Perlis took over and became the official residence to the Chief
Minister. Finally in 1991, the building was demolished and rebuilt, to be
structurally identical to the previous building and converted it to a museum. The
museum houses Islamic artifact, Perlis/Kedah craft and item belonging to the royal
family.
The final destination was Padang Besar located in northern part of Perlis, sharing
border with Songkhla province, Thailand. It is situated 35km northeast of Kangar.
Due to its close proximity to Thailand, it is also known as Pekan Siam (Siamese
town). Padang Besar is a popular shopping heaven for both Malaysian and Thais
since 1960. Most visitors flock the place during the weekends to get their supply..
Though it is not a glamourous high end market, Padang Besar sure has its own
charm. The place is a blend of cultures from 2 neighbouring countries offering
many local products. The range of products includes textile, fashion, handicraft,
food, jewellery and kitchen utensils. Most Malaysian would visit the Complex Aked
Niaga and Gapura Square, whereas the Thai prefer to shop at Jalan Besar.
