In Jason Wu’s second crack at the runway as artistic director of Hugo Boss, he seemed to be more comfortable with the house source material of
Teutonic tailoring.
But, now, he was confident enough to inject more fashion and more of his own feminine vision into the collection, which was a good thing and presumably why the Boss brass hired him.
If his first collection last fall inched the brand’s tradition of strict tailoring and workwear in a softer direction, here it got a firm push.
Wu gave the Boss tenets of shirting and suiting their due but shifted the balance of masculine versus feminine in favor of the latter. Without sacrificing precision, he riffed on the white shirt opening the show with two short tweed shirtdresses — one sleeveless and collarless, the other more traditional — that were stark in silhouette yet softened with light-gray geometric patterns.
A group of navy bonded jersey suiting with lightly tipped seams was gracefully cut with movement. Styledriven women with strict corporate dress codes, rejoice!
Aside from a couple of overly boxy leather jacket and skirt looks, this was a womanly collection grounded in practicality but with room to live the dream. And for that, Wu’s Boss lady had a variety of pretty pastel dresses decorated in graphic beads.

Nation’ was the theme of
DKNY’s bold spring collection, which aimed to celebrate the city’s “color, culture and creativity” as the show notes put it. Donna
Karan translated the idea mostly via bright hues, several graphically rendered like a kaleidoscope on oversize silhouettes.
Those included the striking red-and-blue
V-neck tunic over a full skirt with a soft flounce
— imagine
Olive Oyl with the energy of a native New
Yorker. The subtler colors achieved this more effectively such as the crisp mint-green parka shown with a striped T-shirt and a miniskirt.
It still captured the energy of
Gotham but with just the right control.

Etro’s man is no wallflower especially for Spring/Summer
2015. In fact, he’s more of a
Bacchanalian buffet table.
The show started out classic enough
— double-breasted suits that were a little retro, but still on trend — and then gradually became more eccentric.
A baby pink parka styled with baby blue jogging pants and matching sweater were only a gentle introduction to what was about to transpire. “We are what we eat,” was the name of the collection, and Kean
Etro relied heavily on 16 th -century
Italian painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo
—famous for his fantasy portraits composed of foodstuffs.
But Etro let his imagination run wild in the last third of the collection as he splashed prints of crustaceans, fruit, fish, veggies, lasagna and plates full of pasta onto track pants, shirts, anoraks and parkas. Not even the weekender bags and the trendy slipon sneakers were spared the kooky motifs. It ended up being too rich for the stomach.

One of Europe’s funkiest women drummers: Patti Ballinas has performed & recorded with many well-known musicians and bands such as Dave Weckl, Buika, Chenoa and Molly
Duncan in a successful career spanning many continents and countries, including Spain, Portugal, Germany, Italy,
Mexico, Ukraine, Jordan and Japan where she gave solo demonstrations for electronic and acoustic Yamaha Drums.
In fact she was the first drummer from Spain representing
Yamaha Drums worldwide (although she’s part Scottish as well as Spanish). The Avenues magazine had the pleasure of meeting Patti Ballinas last month during her first trip to Kuwait to talk more about her special performance at The Avenues and her new recording project as well as European tour.

How did you start playing drums?
I started playing drums when I was eight years together with my two sisters, Carol & Ivonne. I’ve played in many concerts in Scotland and the band appeared on Scottish TV (STV).
By the time I had moved to Mallorca,
Spain, the band was working under the name ‘Aqua Vitae’.
With a few good years of concert experience under my belt, I worked with several musicians and bands in Mallorca and Madrid, and also became a well-known drummer in
Spain. At the same time, singing together with my sisters, we formed a ‘Motown Show’. I started my own career as a session drummer and soon became an endorser for Yamaha
Drums.
This is your second visit to the
Middle East after Dubai. Tell us more who brought you here.
I’m here for a Yamaha Drum demonstration and master class. I’m doing a drum performance here at

DTX-550K electronic drums and
Gigmaker acoustic drums.
When did you start playing
Yamaha drums?
I had my first Yamaha drum kit twentysix years ago. But I can say that I actually became a Yamaha artist only seventeen years ago.
What kinds of music styles do you play?
I play with different bands across many genres of music —from jazz, country, rock, funk, hip-hop, soul, pop,
R&B, and Irish.
You are the first drummer from
Spain representing Yamaha Drums worldwide. How do you feel?
Amazing —even today it’s still an amazing feeling. It was a dream of mine that came true — to be a
Yamaha artist and part of the Yamaha family. I love using these drums.
Why Yamaha specifically? What makes their drums so unique?
The quality is very important to

What was the initial brief you received from Coty?
To keep building on the successful story of The Game by creating a new fragrance with an unexplored facet that could express the light-hearted brilliant side of a natural born winner.
The idea was really to develop a unique note for this sensual charismatic launch of Davidoff, exploring an unparalleled dimension of joy, luminosity and radiance.

What is your earliest fashion memory?
When I was at school – maybe buying my first cashmere Jaeger sweater. And my first Pucci dress.
If you had to describe yourself in just a few words, what would they be?
I probably would have to say strong, curious and loving life. I love life so much. I’m an adventuress.
I love to bite into life like an apple.
You’ve said in the past you love ageing because it gives you experience...
No, no, wait a minute! I don’t love ageing but, you know, the alternative to ageing – you don’t want that.
Ageing means living, right? And if you live and you’re aged, it means you have a past and if you’re OK with your past, and have lived it fully, then it’s OK.
As I’m talking to you, I’m doing my make-up and I can’t possibly say I love ageing or that I love my face, but this is my face. You have to make the most of it.
Do you miss being young?
I don’t miss anything about being young. What does it mean, “being young”? I am the way I am.
The thing that makes me happy is I didn’t waste my time in my youth.
The biggest advice I can give anyone is that the most important relationship you have is with yourself and then any other relationship is a plus, not a minus.
Get to know yourself.
And don’t waste your time! Be hard on yourself.
You have to be non-delusional in order to like yourself but if you are straight to yourself, you will also be nice to yourself.

So you’ve never had plastic surgery?
[Sighs] No. The thing I’m afraid of is that I wouldn’t recognize myself
[if I had surgery] and then I would become insecure.
You’ve just written a memoir, ‘The
Woman I Wanted to Be’. So are you now the woman you wanted to be?
You know, the truth is, I became the woman I wanted to be very, very early in my life, I think in my late 20s. The wonderful thing is that I became that woman through designing the [wrap] dress and through its success. I was becoming this woman because of fashion, because of my little dress, and as I was getting more confidence, I was also sharing my confidence with other women through the dress.
From the very, very beginning, it was this incredible dialogue with other women... an extraordinary adventure.
The wrap dress is 40 years old this year and it’s still your most famous creation...
This little dress I took for granted, even though it had paid for everything I had – the houses, my children’s education, everything!

I never sat down and realized the impact of it.
For a while, I lost the personality of my brand and a little bit of confidence. It was only last year I decided I would celebrate this brand through the exhibition [‘The Journey of a Dress’, which opened in LA in
January]. I didn’t want to call myself a designer for so long and all of a sudden, I realized, I did more than a fashion statement with this dress. I did a sociological statement.
The truth is: this book is so meaningful for me because I’ve never gone to therapy and this book was like therapy.
You write movingly about your mother, Liliane, a Holocaust survivor who was interned in Auschwitz because of her work for the Belgian resistance. You say that she taught you not to feel frightened. Do you ever feel fear?
No. I was never allowed to be afraid.
She would never let me be afraid. It was part of the biggest gift she gave me. She would say: “Why are you afraid? That just makes it worse.”
Fear is not an option. It just isn’t.
You’ve got to deal with whatever.
Was she proud of you?
Oh yes. She only died 14 years ago, so she saw me as a full woman and she saw my children as parents.
Yeah, she was proud of me but she would tell other people more than she would tell me. One of the great things about this book is that I think
I honor her.
Two days ago, I received an email from a 90-year-old who was also a survivor of the camps – a beautiful, strong, positive woman – and she emailed me because she’d read the book and she said: “I want you to know you not only honored your mother, you honored all us survivors.”
Your friend Andy Warhol photographed you. What was he like?
He was a voyeur. He never spoke much. He would take your picture and say: “Oh great, that’s great.” He certainly was a visionary in terms of where the world was going, in terms of branding, icons... He would have lost his mind on social media.
Are you on social media?
Yes, I always joke that I’m happy I’m old enough to have been to Studio
54 and young enough to be part of the digital revolution.
I love it. You have all this access and so much power! I do everything on my iPad – Scrabble, jigsaw puzzles...
Do you have a favorite dvf wrap dress you wear all the time?
I don’t have the waist to wear a wrap dress any more.

Day Celebration at Grand Avenue. Attended by the Governor of Al-Farwaniya His Excellency
