TERM 4
MONDAY 7 OCTOBER – FRIDAY 20 DECEMBER
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Over the last two weeks, the students have been involved in many great learning opportunities.
The Year 6 students had Hugh van Cuylenburg talking to them about ‘Resilience’ in a very engaging
and informative presentation. Resilience is important for all of our students and especially for Year 6
students as they are preparing for the transition to secondary school. These students are also currently
participating in ‘Family Life ‘ sessions providing them with good information about the changes they will
experience physically, emotionally and socially as they move towards adolescence and adulthood.
Next week Year 9 students from East Doncaster Secondary College (EDSC) will be visiting the Year 5s
and talking to them about secondary school. The Year 5s will also be going to EDSC in the next couple
of weeks to learn more about secondary school.
Over the last week, the Prep – Year 2 students have enjoyed their sessions in the Life Ed van where
they have met Harold the giraffe and the educator, who have taught them about safety, healthy eating,
friendship and working with others.
A number of students have participated in Hooptime over the last week with some good results.
Congratulations to all students who competed. Last Friday the Junior School Council organised a
successful Footy dress up day to raise money for State Schools Relief which is an organisation that
provides school uniforms for students and families who are having financial difficulties. It was a great
success and they raised $500.
A number of our students participated in the Manningham Public Speaking Competition at Doncaster
PS on Wednesday. All of them spoke very well and are to be congratulated for their speech, their
confidence and for taking a risk to speak in front of a large group of parents and students from other
schools. The primary schools in Manningham sent representatives to compete in the competition.
Congratulations to Max 4AA from Milgate who won the Year 3 and 4 trophy for the best speech.
PRE SCHOOL STORYTIME SESSIONS AT MILGATE
Last Friday 2.15 – 3.15pm was the first Storytime session for this term. Karen Jensen (our Librarian) is
running three storytime sessions for preschool children who will be starting school in Prep in 2014.
They read a story and then did a follow up activity which they all enjoyed. Year 5 students assisted with
the activity as they will be Buddies to the Preps in 2014.
PLANNING WEEK
Next week is Planning Week for Term 4 when each year level team of teachers and specialist teachers
plan the curriculum and learning program. Each team will spend a day planning engaging, challenging
and interesting learning for the students.
CHINESE STUDENTS AND TEACHERS VISIT – 7-11 OCTOBER
We are looking forward to the visit to Milgate of 12 students and 6 teachers from our sister school Kindergarten and Experimental Primary school of Beijing University. The students and teachers will be
arriving on Monday 7 October in the afternoon and then spending Tuesday to Friday at the school in
classrooms and learning about education in Australia. Two of the teachers are from the Beijing
kindergarten so they will spend a day at Catjump Preschool learning about kindergarten education in
Australia. Thank you to all families who will be hosting the students. They are now in the process of
contacting the students and getting to know them before they come to stay with them and visit Milgate.
A notice has gone home requesting parents to assist with interpreting, as not all of the teachers can
speak English, and also for assistance in providing lunches for the Chinese teachers each day. If you
are available to assist please return the notice or contact the school. This will be a wonderful
opportunity for our students, families, community and the Chinese visitors to share together about our
different education, cultures and to learn from each other.
CYBERSAFETY
Last Sunday in the Herald Sun newspaper there was an article about ‘KiK’ which is a social media
messaging site that is popular with young people as a way of sending free texts, photos and videos.
There has been some very inappropriate use and people using the site and this is causing concern for
parents and police. While Kik states that it is for people over the age of 13 years, it is easy to create a
profile and it is being used by children as young as 8 years. Parents are encouraged to monitor their
children’s use of social media / internet sites and continue to reinforce cyber safety. A couple of weeks
ago two of our staff, Karlie Gooding and Claire Harvey-Beavis, presented very useful information to a
parent group about cybersafety, keeping safe on social media / internet and some of the sites that
young people use. The presentation is available on the school website and I would encourage all
parents to look at it – there is a link on the homepage. Other useful information is available on the
following websites: www.cybersmart.gov.au and www.cybersafekids.com.au.
YEAR 5 AND 6 MUSICAL – DANGER KIDS
The Year 5 and 6 students are busy preparing for their musical which will be on Monday 16 September
and Tuesday 17 September at the Doncaster Secondary College performing arts centre. There will be
matinee and evening performances on both days and tickets are available for purchase online from the
school’s website. All classes in the school will be seeing the performance over the two days. It will be a
fantastic performance.

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
WORKING BEE … THANK YOU
Our Term 3 Working Bee took place on Sunday 25 August. It was a warm and sunny morning and we
managed to clear the gardens around the Year 3/4 building and plant over 200 new grasses and
shrubs. I would like to say a huge thank you to all the families who gave up their Sunday morning to
attend our working bee. Your help was greatly appreciated and there is no way we could maintain our
beautiful gardens without your generous support.
Thank you to the following students and their families: CiCi W, Mitchell D, Emma and Kate M, Matthew
G, Jessica and Callum M, Nathan L, Emma P, Petra E, Jack and Jessica D, Zoe C and Brianna F.
Unfortunately we did not have as many people as we would have liked on the day but we hope to see
more members of our community at our next working bee.
MULCH MOVING (HELP REQUIRED)
This Friday 6th September from 2.00 – 5.00pm we will be spreading mulch over our gardens. If you are
available, at any time between this period, please come and help us. We need as many people as
possible as there is a substantial amount of mulch to move. There is no need to RSVP, just show up
and lend a hand. Please bring a shovel, rake and if you are able, a wheelbarrow.

FROM THE OFFICE
SICK / ILL CHILDREN
We have had a number of students who have been unwell over the last few weeks and they have had
to be sent home from school. Please do not send your child to school if they are unwell as we are
unable to care for sick children at school. If they are unwell this also becomes a health issue for others
in the class as germs spread quickly and others may also become ill. We appreciate your help with this
in working together to provide a safe and healthy environment for all our students and staff.
REQUEST – NO NUTELLA, PEANUT BUTTER OR NUT PRODUCTS AT SCHOOL
As there are a number of students in the school who have nut allergies and some
who are anaphylactic (life threatening allergy), we ask that ALL students have NO
nuts or nut products such as Nutella, peanut butter, etc in their snacks or lunches
that they bring to school. Thank you for your assistance.
LOST RABBIT
A white rabbit with grey markings and dark ears has been found in the Milgate Estate. Please phone
9842 0170 if this is your rabbit or you know who it might belong to.
