The Hugh Binnie Sick Bay is named after Dr Hugh Binnie, a University of Leicester Health Centre doctor who set up the facility in 1967. The Sick Bay is based above the Freemen's Common Surgery on Welford Road and is partly funded by the students themselves who pay a small fee on registering. We work closely with many departments and individuals including the Counselling and Welfare Services, the Chaplaincy, the AccessAbility Centre, Wardens and Sub Wardens and of course the Health Centre GPs, nursing and reception staff. We take students from both Leicester and De Montfort Universities. All Nurses of the Sick Bay are suitably qualified and registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The service operates in compliance with the University of Leicester’s Data Protection Code of Practice and the EDSC’s Confidentiality Policy. Further details about the Sick Bay are contained in our Statement of Service which is available upon request, or on our website at: www.le.ac.uk/sickbay 24 Hour Nursing Care We are a small homely unit staffed by qualified nurses offering 24 hour care, during term time only. There are 10 beds (2 to a room), a treatment room for dressings etc, a quiet room for study and a large common room with TV, videos, daily papers and books. There are also 2 computers available for use that are connected to the University of Leicester network. Three meals a day are provided and visitors are welcome. Most patients stay for a couple of nights, some longer. Others attend for daily care such as post operative wound dressings. Common reasons for admission to Sick Bay are stress, especially during the run up to examinations, colds/flu, asthma, headaches, chicken pox, glandular fever and feeling 'generally unwell'. Some students continue to attend lectures whilst staying in Sick Bay. Admission Admission to Sick Bay usually occurs after consultation with a GP but students can also be accepted as a result of a referral from the Counselling or Welfare Services or via a 'self referral' phone call or visit. However, a doctor will always be informed of every patient admission. Staying in the Sick Bay can often be an alternative to having to return to the family home or may ease the transition to university following a period of hospitalisation or illness. The Sick Bay also acts as first point of contact for patients of Freemen's Common and De Montfort Surgeries who wish to contact a doctor out of normal hours. Sick Bay nurses can arrange GP home visits, or might suggest that the patient comes to Sick Bay or attends the emergency surgery at 'Prime Care' at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. Support during exam times During examination periods we assist the Examination Office and set up a small examination room within the Sick Bay. Here students who are too unwell or stressed to take their exams on the main site can sit their exam in a more peaceful and supportive atmosphere. Overall the we aim to offer a friendly and caring atmosphere for students to rest and recuperate. Opening Hours Term time Monday – Sunday: 24 Hours a day If you would like to arrange a visit or to speak to a member of staff about a health related issue please telephone 0116 223-1268. Vacation period The Sick Bay is closed during University vacation periods but maintains a part-time staff presence to deal with administrative issues
