As per the feedback the improvements in the program will be implemented this year. 24 | Special Innovative approach adopted by the college in improving the UG education The college is running Student Research Scheme for all the departments. All the UG and PG students are participating in the research projects competition. The evaluation process is done by external examiners of other colleges and the students are awarded by the certificates and a token of amount. All these efforts are made to inculcate scientific attitude amongst the students. 25 | A summary on “how the Scheme helped in strengthening of the UG education and what would not have been possible without this” The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) Star College Scheme provided an inert support for the facilities required in enhancing teaching and learning, realizing the need to pursue science as a career and to improve the quality of the teaching and learning experience in a holistic way. Due to the provision of multiple copies of routine equipment enhanced the enthusiasm for practicals. Moreover, emphasis on hands-on experience to undergraduate students and inter-disciplinary minor research projects has provided an opportunity for students to experience first-hand training. Furthermore, young students got much-needed exposure to lectures by eminent scientists, and visits to nearby research institutions that inspired them to pursue postgraduate courses in science. A large number of resources such as laboratory manuals and standard operating procedures have been generated. This programme has rendered to inculcate innovative - 27 - ideas among students and teachers and that would continuously innovate and evolve new ideas to improve. Since, the university does not provide autonomy to make changes in the syllabus, DBT star college scheme allows to introduce additional experiments. The financial assistance from most funding agencies are meant for high end instruments for post graduate studies and research. However, the scheme has helped to procure basic equipment and instruments for undergraduate education. Due to high number of students coming from financially poor background, industrial visits are not always possible. The financial assistance has helped in arranging such visits. In short following benefits were measured by running this scheme Students got the insight to handle the instruments with utmost care Students could understand the basic principles involved in the concern experiment Students got the opportunity to have the hands on training through experiments and projects. This could help them for other experiments and innovative thinking. Students became familiar with various functions while using MS Excel, could understand the structure of datasheets and an insight to appropriate selection and use of electronic components Students could understand the concept and determine least count of various instruments; and handling of instruments with care by their own. Further, the workshops on molecular biology are highly costly. A workshop on “Restriction enzyme technology” organized by Central Dogma Pvt. Ltd. Would not have been possible without this scheme. 25| Suggestions/ Feedback for improving the scheme If a booklet giving some guidelines on implementation of the scheme, formats of reports is provided, it would help in a better execution of the scheme. If some MoU’s are signed between DBT and renowned institutions, it would facilitate to depute the students / faculty for training at these institutes. It can be made mandatory for all the colleges receiving “Star College” funds to arrange “Student / Faculty Exchange Program”, it can assist the knowledge sharing and enrich the academic experiences. However, in case of faculty exchange, a proper coordination/ regulation will be required considering the service norms and continuity of their service - 28 - DR. VANDANA V.
