Course Name: Earth Science
Textbook: Holt Science and Technology
Cost to replace: $70.75
Course Description: The sixth grade science program is a process oriented, activity centered, approach to earth
science, which encourages the ability to think critically, to solve problems creatively, and to demonstrate an
understanding of basic earth science concepts. Special focus is given to vocabulary as well as Earth’s water,
weather, the solar system, rocks and minerals, plate tectonics, and the ocean’s topography.
Objectives: The students will have an introduction to the Earth and its features, processes, and place in the
universe. To support J.J. Daniell’s school goals there will be an increased focus in reading, writing, and math in
all subject areas. A collaborative effort will be made to prepare all students to meet CRCT standards.

This course is differentiated in content, pacing, process skill, and expectations. Curriculum content has been
designed for mastery and extension of state and district standards. The course is appropriate for students who
have a high achievement and interest in science. Students will routinely complete challenging in and out of class
assignments and projects. The district established criteria and guidelines that identify students who will be
successful with the advanced curriculum offered in science. Students must meet continuation criteria which is a
grade of 80 to remain in the class.
School-Wide Behavior Plan:
Appropriate and focused behavior is critical to every student’s success in this class. Therefore, behavior will be
monitored using the conduct card described in the agenda. Please review your child’s conduct card with them
frequently and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Contents of this syllabus are subject to change in order to meet the needs of the students.

Dear Parent/Guardian,
Our class will be viewing/using the following supplementary/ library media materials:
Title: Dante’s Peak; Twister; The Day After Tomorrow
Type of Media:
Movie
______
Rating and Basis for Rating if Applicable (e.g., PG-13 for Language): PG-13 for all three movies for language; intense
natural disasters/violence/trauma, and (Dante’s Peak – very brief nudity ~ backside only)
The class plans to use this material for the following educational purpose:
The movies meet our classroom
standards and are used for students to compare and contrast the real life situations to fictitious situations. They share and
illustrate the effects students learn about in relationship to the various natural disasters.
S6E5. Students will investigate the scientific view of how the earth’s surface is formed.
d. Describe processes that change rocks and the surface of the earth.
e. Recognize that lithospheric plates constantly move and cause major geological events on the earth’s surface.
f. Explain the effects of physical processes (plate tectonics, erosion, deposition, volcanic eruption, gravity) on geological
features including oceans (composition, currents, and tides)
S6E4. Students will understand how the distribution of land and oceans affects climate and weather.
b. Relate unequal heating of land and water surfaces to form large global wind systems and weather events such as tornados
and thunderstorms.
c. Relate how moisture evaporating from the oceans affects the weather patterns and weather events such as hurricanes.
Because of the sensitive nature of the materials, and pursuant to Administrative Rule IJK (Library Media
Programs and Supplementary Materials Selection), which can be downloaded at www.cobbk12.org, I am
requesting that you provide your permission for your student to participate in using or viewing this material.
Please return this permission form no later than
