MUSEUM OF NEW MEXICO FOUNDATION
MUSEUM OF NEW MEXICO FOUNDATION
Dear Members,
I n August, I assumed my new responsibilities as chair of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation Board of
Trustees. It is with great anticipation—and some anxiety—that I take on the job.
As you probably know, Tom Aageson, our executive director for the past eight years, will leave the Foundation as soon as we find his replacement.
We have established a search committee involving Foundation trustees and representatives of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Museum of New Mexico Regents. The search will be comprehensive and broad as we look for an individual with superb management and interpersonal skills, extensive fund raising experience, and a proven record of success.
Replacing Tom will not be easy as he has set high standards for the job. While the various initiatives of Tom’s tenure are too numerous to list, among the most notable were his instrumental role in the recent $25 million Shape the Future campaign and the creation and development of the New Mexico Creates program and the Santa Fe
International Folk Art Market. Tom is a leader in our community and he will be sorely missed.
We will also miss trustee Bruce Larsen at the helm of the board.
He has served faithfully and capably for the past four years to ensure that the Foundation fulfills its mission to support the Museum of
New Mexico’s museums, monuments, and Office of Archaeological
Studies. His leadership has positioned the Foundation to move progressively into the future with its new long-range plan. He has now graciously agreed to serve as chair of the Development Committee.
I have big shoes to fill, but I commit to do my very best to move the Foundation further down this path of increased productivity.
The challenges of our current economic environment also offer new opportunities. As members, our job is to identify and take advantage of these opportunities. I am confident that we are up to the task. I look forward to working with you toward this end.
Bud Hamilton, Board Chairman

Within a year of retiring to Santa Fe in 2000, Cecil Hoffman joined the
Foundation and began to volunteer in the Museum Shops. Her work through the years has included everything from working in the Palace of the Governors Book, Print and Photo Archives Shop to preparing items for sale at the shops’ warehouse. As her responsibilities have grown, she has racked up thousands of work hours—more than any other shop volunteer.
“The mission of the museums means a lot to me,” Hoffman said of her enthusiasm for the museums and volunteer work.
Foundation Director of Retail Operations John Stafford added,
“Cecil has willingly taken on any task required with good humor and grace. She has been invaluable in her assistance to us.”
This sentiment has rung especially true in the past year, as the tough economy forced staff layoffs in the shops. Hoffman responded by taking on even more hours. “It was difficult because many of them were my friends,” she said. “But I think everybody understands that this was the way it had to be. I’m just glad I can help out.”
To volunteer at the shops, contact John Stafford at john@museumfoundation.org or 505-982-3016.
For other volunteer opportunities, contact Mariann Lovato at mariann@museumfoundation.org or 505-982-6366, ext. 117.

Deanna and Bob McMain of Albuquerque have been Foundation members for more than a decade. But when their membership renewal notice arrived in the mail last spring, they decided it was time for a change in routine. Instead of renewing at the Senior
Couple ($60) membership level they had held for ten years, they upgraded two levels to the Sponsor ($125) category.
“We use the membership frequently, not only at the museums but also at the state monuments,” Deanna explained. “While our income is more limited than many, we felt it was important to give a little more at the time, so we did.”
The McMains are among some 500 Foundation households that generously upgraded their memberships during the recent Step Up campaign. In total, these members contributed an additional $75,000 in museum support at a critical time.
“One of the great things about New Mexico is these museums,” Deanna said. “Even if one were to shut down, what a loss that would be.”
To upgrade your membership, contact Mariann Lovato at mariann@museumfoundation.org or 505-982-6366, ext. 117.

She’s not that Julia Roberts, but her generosity deserves a star on the walk of fame.
After 16 years of living in London and Paris, Julia and her husband
John joined the Foundation in 2006. Within just a few years, they have upgraded their membership level—twice—as well as doubled their gift to the Annual Fund for Museum Excellence, which supports museum education, exhibitions, conservation, and preservation.
While many people cut out arts and cultural organizations during tough times, Julia said she and her husband consider art, history, and museums “our food for the heart and soul.”
“In a tough economic time, people have to make decisions about where they are going to give. You have to narrow your focus,” Julia continued.
“The museums are so important for the community, so we thought we’d double down. People really should do it if they can.”
Julia is also a participating artist in the Foundation’s New Mexico Creates program. You can find her paintings and prints at the Spiegelberg Shop in the New Mexico History Museum or online at newmexicocreates.org.
To double your support to the Annual Fund for Museum Excellence, contact Bonnie McLeskey at bonnie@museumfoundation.org or 505-982-6366, ext. 113.

The third New Mexico Women Authors’ Book Festival begins with a special appearance by best-selling author Anne Lamott at 7 PM on Tuesday, September 28, at the historic Lensic Theater in downtown
Santa Fe.
Known for her fearless approach to tough topics of loss and life’s frustrations, Lamott’s ability to inspire readers often has laugh-out-loud results.
“I have a lot of hope and a lot of faith and I struggle to communicate that,” Lamott said.
She has succeeded at this with six novels and four non-fiction books, including Plan B: Further
Thoughts on Faith and Tender Mercies . Her newest novel, Imperfect Birds , was released this spring.
According to Publisher’s Weekly, the book is “Lamott at her most witty, observant and psychologically astute.”
Advance tickets to Lamott’s appearance are advised and are available at the Lensic Box Office, 211
West San Francisco Street; by phone at 505-988-1234; or online at ticketssantafe.org.
More than 100 authors will celebrate the joy of reading and the creative power of women writers during the New
Mexico Women Authors' Book Festival at its new location at the New Mexico History Museum. The festival begins at 11 AM on Saturday, October 2, and runs to 5 PM on Sunday, October 3. The festival, which benefits the
Museum of New Mexico Foundation, is free and open to all ages.
Authors will present in six different venues throughout the History Museum campus in the categories of Fiction,
History/Biography, Poetry, Food/Cooking, Creative Arts,
Spirit/Health, Children, and Special Topics. Books by participating authors will be for sale, with authors on hand to sign books after their presentations. Special presentations will be given by the Santa Fe Book
Arts Group and the Palace Press, and an acoustic music stage will feature entertainment from throughout
New Mexico.
The festival is organized and produced by the Museum of New Mexico Foundation Shops’ New Mexico Creates program. Please visit newmexicocreates.org for more information.

Furniture designs, manufactures, and sells wall coverings and textiles for the contract and hospitality markets.
Kimberle Frost, Designtex vice president of marketing and design, will visit the Museum of International Folk
Art and Museum of Indian Arts and
Culture this fall in search of design inspiration for a new wall covering and textile collection to be launched in March 2011. For more information about Designtex, visit designtex.com.
New Mexico History Museum Director Frances Levine recently represented the museum at the sixth annual
International Council of Museums in Bilbao, Spain. The museum was one of four invited to the conference from outside of Spain, along with representatives from the Te
Papa Museum in Wellington, New Zealand; the Deutsches
Historisches Museum in Berlin; and the Museu Portimão in
Portugal.
“It was a great honor to have been selected as the only North
American museum to participate in the meetings,” Levine said. “The experience was richly rewarding and the daily visits to the museums in the Basque region were fabulous.”

In 1994, Santa Fe fiber artist
Maggy Ryan bequeathed a substantial charitable remainder trust to the Museum of New Mexico
Foundation as a way to perpetuate her passion for the state’s museums and art education. In designing a planned gift, Ryan created a
“living legacy” that would continue beyond her lifetime to benefit future generations.
Today, the Foundation’s Maggy
Ryan Legacy Society honors Ryan’s memory, her generous investment in New Mexico’s cultural treasures, and those who have made planned gifts to the Museum of
New Mexico Foundation. To join the Maggy Ryan Legacy Society or to inform us that we are in your estate plans, contact Kathryn
