The College of Engineering is home to a nationally-recognized program that effectively transitions veterans into degree programs in engineering and successfully places graduates in permanent jobs, with over 125 veterans placed in the last two (2) years alone. The College of Engineering is one of the most diverse colleges in the US, with a student population that reflects the diversity of Southern California. SDSU is the National Affiliate University in California for Project Lead The Way (PLTW). California has the greatest number of PLTW middle and high schools, over 420, offering curriculum that teach middle and high school students about careers in engineering. With the support of generous alumni and friends of the University, the College of Engineering is able to offer a significant number of scholarships so that truly outstanding undergraduates can study at SDSU. Centers of Excellence The College of Engineering houses an NSF-sponsored Engineering Research Center (ERC) in Sensorimotor Neural Engineering in collaboration with University of Washington and MIT. The ERC is one of NSF’s most prestigious programs. Funding for the Center is expected to exceed $40 million over 10 years. The College participates in an on-campus incubator (the Zahn Innovation Center) for faculty and student entrepreneurs, resulting in significant cross-college collaborations with Business, Health and Human Services, and Science. Social entrepreneurism has become the newest initiative, engaging the entire University. A Mechanical Engineering faculty received almost $4 million from the Department of Energy under their SunShot program to develop new high efficient technologies to convert sunlight into electric power using carbon nanoparticles entrained in air. With funding from the San Diego Foundation (the Blasker Chair) and from William E. Leonhard, Jr. for an endowed chair, the Environmental Engineering program is distinguishing itself nationally for outstanding work, especially in the area of water resources. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is recognized internationally for its excellence in wireless communication.
