Reservoir Monitoring with DTS
Reduces Operating Costs by
Optimizing Gas Lift Operation
and Flow Assurance
Objectives
• Provide deepwater flow assurance and gas-lift monitoring
along with production surveillance on a six-well deepwater
project.
Results
• Distributed temperature sensor (DTS) surveys and
pressure/temperature (P/T) data were used to accurately
identify “cool down” times, the amount of time that a well or
flowline can be left untreated before hydrate formation
becomes an issue.
• DTS Data was then used to optimize wax inhibitor injection
by identifying when riser temperatures reached the point
where wax inhibitors were required.
• DTS measurements were additionally used to establish the
operating parameters for the gas-lift system, providing
information to determine that gas-lift valves were operating
correctly.
On this deepwater, six-well monitoring
program, Weatherford’s field-wide installation
of optical sensing systems provided essential
information for production optimization.
Location
Offshore, Gulf of Mexico
Well Type
Deepwater TLP platform
Water Depth
4,300 ft (1,311 m)
Value to Client
• Using optical temperature monitoring systems saved the
operator money by optimizing the paraffin inhibitor program
and reducing the need for costly chemical remedial
treatments that the formation of paraffins and hydrates in
these wells would have required.
Products/Services
• DTS analysis
• Optical reservoir monitoring system
• DTS measurements also helped establish the optimal
operating parameters of the live gas-lift valves before
installation, enhancing efficiency and providing additional time
and money savings.

Weatherford's well monitoring
with DTS provides
temperature measurements
every 3.3 ft (1m), which
enables continuous
temperature logging of the
