ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING at PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY Electrical Engineering deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism. It covers a range of topics including power, electronics, telecommunications, etc. Electrical Engineers are typically concerned with using electricity to transmit energy and also to process information. Students must apply to the Electrical Engineering (EE) major in the Maseeh College as all required coursework is nearing completion (by the application deadline) in order to take upper division (300– and 400– level) courses. This is a separate application from the PSU Admission Application. Details of admission to the EE major can be found on the website (http://www.pdx.edu/ece/admissions-process). General education: Transfer students enter into PSU’s University Studies (General Education) program based on the quantity of credits completed. In addition, transfer students are required to complete Arts and Letters/Social Science (A&L/SS) Requirements. Note: EE majors are required to take WR 121 and a Speech/Communication class prior to admission to the upper division program. EE majors can choose to take lower-division WR 227 (Introductory Technical Writing) at their community college or the upper division WR 327 (Technical Report Writing) at PSU. Please see the handout entitled “Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science Arts & Letters/Social Science Requirement” (available on the Maseeh College Undergraduate Advising website under the info for “Transfer Students”: www.pdx.edu/cecs/undergraduate-advising) for more info. TIPS Page 1 Apply to PSU by the priority admission deadlines (December 1 for the following fall) Apply to the ECE Department once required lower division courses are nearly completed (more info: http://www.pdx.edu/ece/admissions-process) following ECE Department deadlines; lower division courses may be taken at PSU or at community college In order to apply for PSU scholarships, students must have already applied to PSU. Scholarship application due date=Feb. 1 for the next academic year that begins in September (http://www.pdx.edu/scholarships) All incoming PSU students must complete Orientation before registering; students must have been admitted to PSU before they can sign up for Orientation Advising is available for transfer students still studying at the community colleges (contact the Maseeh College Student Services Offices: 503.725.4631; advisor@cecs.pdx.edu) Required PSU MATH courses: PCC: Clackamas: Chemeketa: MHCC: Math 251/Calculus 1 Math 251 Math 251 Math 251 Math 251 Math 252/Calculus 2 Math 252 Math 252 Math 252 Math 252 Math 261/Linear Algebra Math 261 Math 261 —-- Math 261 Math 254/Calculus 4 Math 254 Math 254 Math 254 Math 254 Math 256/Differential Equations Math 256 Math 256 Math 256 Math 256 Required PSU SCIENCE courses: PCC: Clackamas: Chemeketa: MHCC: CH 221&227 General Chemistry with lab CH 221 CH 221 CH 221 CH 221 PH 211/214 or 221/214 ; PH 212/215 or 222/215; PH 213/216 or 223/216 General Physics (Calculus) with labs PH 211, 213, 212* PH 211, 212, 213* PH 211, 213, 212* PH 211, 213, 212* Required PSU 100— level ENGINEERING courses: PCC: Clackamas: Chemeketa: MHCC: ECE 101, ECE 102 & ECE 103 ENGR 101 & CS 161 (or ENGR 102) & CS 161+CS 162 & CS 161+CS 162 & CS 161+162* GE 101+GE 102* GE102* —-- —- ECE 171/Digital Circuits ENGR 171 ENGR 111+ENGR 112 & CS 162* —- Required PSU 200– level ENGINEERING courses: PCC: Clackamas: Chemeketa: MHCC: ECE 221/Electric Circuit Analysis I ENGR 221* ENGR 221 EGR 201* ENGR 201 ECE 222/Electric Circuit Analysis II ENGR 222* ENGR 222 EGR 202* —- ECE 223/Electric Circuit Analysis III ENGR 223* ENGR 223 EGR 203* —- ECE 271/Digital Systems ENGR 271 —– —— —– *Please note that when completing a sequence of classes as noted by a “*”, you should complete the entire sequence at one institution (rather than attempting to complete parts at different institutions). Access to upper division (300– and 400– level) courses in Electrical Engineering at PSU is granted when students complete all lower division requirements listed above and have applied and been formally admitted to the upper division EE major.
