Contact technical support at 800-648-4076 for installation recommendations.) It is important to understand that lightning and other surge currents are seeking routes to earth ground through any low-impedance path they can find. Any conductors penetrating an exterior wall of a facility can act as an antenna, attracting unwanted energy and causing it to travel through sensitive electronic equipment that has a good ground reference. With these two thoughts in mind, to properly protect your mission critical equipment, you must create a low impedance path to ground for any extra or unwanted energy to travel before it gets to your equipment. A good ground reference will help dissipate energy efficiently and minimize the chance of damage or injury. Proper grounding also protects personnel from the dangers of shock and hazardous voltages, and contributes to the reduction of electrical noise. When our surge suppressors are used in line with your electronics, it is of the utmost importance that a proper ground reference be established. Because our suppressors become a low impedance pathway when they turn on (see page 6), the necessity for the energy to continue to ground and be dissipated has now become the highest priority. Without the proper reference or connection, the unwanted energy continues through to your panel, which typically results in damaged components on the circuit board or nuisance “troubles.” Communications ■ The Edco HCO is a solid-state, telephone interface line protector module. It features uniquely designed repositionable outlets for easy installation behind desks and other furniture and an external ground screw to aid in single point grounding. Perfect for home or office. ANSI/UL1449 Third Edition, Type 3. ■ The Edco PHC Series is designed to protect two pairs of wires Edco PCB1B-WKEY Base (Sold Separately) specifically for alarm, security and speaker systems where operating currents can be as high as 5 Amps. Electrically, the Edco PHC Series is a rugged series hybrid implementing a staged complement of MOVs, copper wound inductors and Silicon Avalanche Diodes. This design reduces series resistance to 0.2 ohms per pair. These products are intended to mate with an Edco PCB1B-WKEY gold-plated female terminal connector (sold separately). ■ The Edco OPX Series surge protectors are designed specifically for medium exposure applications. Thus, the protectors can be used on pairs inside a building or leaving a building in conduit up to 500 feet. The Edco OPX Series offers several distinct advantages over other current technologies. Among the advantages are low cost, no series resistance, and durable, solid-state construction. The Edco OPX Series single pair modules fit onto a standard Edco M1-50 split block. In addition, these modules require the Edco MGB Ground Rail for each Edco M1-50 block used. Gas Discharge Tube (GDTs) GDTs provide a low impedance path for transients to follow when voltages exceed the DC rating. GDTs have a very high surge current rating with low capacitance. Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) MOVs shunt transients by decreasing their resistance as voltage is applied. MOVs have highenergy dissipation and good clamping response with normal capacitance. PolySwitch Resettable Fuses (PTCs) A PTC protects a circuit by going from a low resistance to a high-resistance state in response to an overcurrent condition. A PTC will automatically reset (resume its low-resistance state) after the fault condition has passed. ■ Edco PB Series modules are solid-state protectors for Intercom Extension pairs. These hybrid protectors feature solid-state resettable fuses (PTCs) between the protected equipment and the over voltage clamping components. This unique design prevents problems with All-Call in the event of catastrophic protector failure. The Edco PB Series single pair modules fit onto a standard Edco M1-50 split block and replace bridging clips. In addition, these modules require the Edco MGB Ground Rail for each Edco M1-50 block used. 20 Silicon Avalanche Diodes (SADs) SADs have good surge handling capabilities with an extremely fast clamping response. Capacitance is nominal, which makes it ideal for data, signal line and telco applications. Sidactor Sidactors, when turned on, will crowbar and simulate a short circuit condition. They offer fast clamping response and excellent surge handling capability with low capacitance. 5 Edco Series Hybrid Surge Suppressors Protecting Sound/Intercom Systems An Edco series hybrid surge suppressor is essentially a threshold type of device. Voltages higher than the threshold level result in the suppressor becoming a low impedance path to ground. A suppressor in the low impedance state will conduct the transient from the protected line. Looking at the illustration below, you’ll notice that we combine several technologies to build the highest quality, industrial grade series suppressor on the market today. The Edco PC642-Series (shown below) uses SADs and GDTs together in a circuit, but is separated by PTCs, which provide adequate resistance to separate the components. This combination has been field tested in the harshest environments and has been proven to be fast, rugged and reliable for data, signal line, telco and virtually all low voltage applications where the steady state of current is less than 200 milliamperes. It is, therefore, critical that the suppressor be applied to the specific service for which it was designed. For product recommendations, please do not hesitate to call 800-288-6169. 5 Grounding (Please note: All dedicated grounding conductors should be bonded to Building Approved AC Power Safety Ground.
