PRODUCT CATALOGUE AND QUALITY SPECIFICATION SLP-THERMOWOOD® Helsinki We combine Finnish wood, natural appearance and ecological thinking. As a result we offer durable and valuable wood products. Suomen Lämpöpuu - SLP SLP-THERMOWOOD® EXTERIOR CLADDING AND OUTDOOR CONSTRUCTION PRODUCTS SLP-THERMOWOOD® WARMCLAD Decay- and weather resistance are important characteristics for a cladding board. WarmClad is an excellent choice for exterior cladding. Its decay resistance class is I-II and its usable life is many times greater than that of untreated wood. WarmClad’s moisture content is half that of normal wood and surface splitting caused by UV-radiation will be less than with normal wood. WarmClad is also available with oil surface treatment which helps to keep the beautiful brown color. Without treatment the surface of thermally treated wood will turn grey due to UV-radiation. Durability is one of the most important characteristics of a decking product. Thermal treatment provides the wood with an excellent biological durability, its decay resistance class is I-II and its usable life is many times greater than that of untreated wood. WarmDeck’s moisture content is half that of normal wood and surface splitting caused by UV-radiation will be less than with normal wood. Classic Elegant Elegant side-grooved Concealed fastening system We recommend surface treatment of decking boards. Without treatment the surface of thermally treated wood will turn grey due to UV-radiation. First layer of surface treatment can also be applied in our factory. Our concealed fastening system creates a stylish and finished appearance. In addition to decking boards, we offer other thermally treated products for building fences and other garden structures. SLP-THERMOWOOD® QUALITY PRINCIPLES GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF RAW MATERIAL QUALITY We use Finnish pine and spruce as our primary raw materials. Thermal treatment places high demands on the raw material, which means only the best parts of the wood are suitable for the process. We use Nordic timber grade AB timber, and only heartwood from 2 ex center cuts. Although we use high-quality coniferous wood, wood is a natural material and it is not of consistent quality or uniform appearance throughout. Many factors affect the variability of the timber quality, such as the tree’s growth conditions and age. Nordic conifers also have branches, but we try to use only heartwood from the upper limbs, to maximize the portion of sound knots. (Quality AB, heart wood according to “Nordic Timber – grading rules” www.stmy.fi/en/publications) PLANING We use a powerful modern plane that has been optimized for use with ThermoWood®. Planing thermo-treated wood differs from planing ordinary timber, but experience has taught us how to handle ThermoWood® the most appropriate way. Different profiles place their own demands on working with thermally treated wood. Thin profiles split more easily than thicker ones, and the deeper the planing, the more likely cracks will appear. Long experience has helped us develop the profiles most suitable for thermally treated wood. Our products are quality-graded according to the following principles: Grading is done by visually inspecting the board’s appearance. The product’s profile, intended use, and size affect its final classification. Typically 1,5 - 10 % of a production batch is discarded. In appraising the timber we evaluate its natural properties as well as the technical characteristics arising from the treatment process. These include the size, number and placement of knots, as well as checks, wane, pitch pockets, bark pockets, deformations and color. All sides are inspected separately. The grade is assigned based primarily on the intended use of the board and visual assessment of both its faces. QUALITY DESCRIPTION Quality: SLP-ThermoWood Thermo-D Raw material: Pine (Pinus Sylvestris), Spruce (Picea Abies) Quality of the raw material: Nordic timber quality AB heart wood Surface: Planed Installation: Decking, External Cladding Moisture: 4 – 6 % after production Tolerances: INTERNAL QUALITY ASSURANCE Our products are manufactured under the framework established by a Bureau Veritas Certification quality management system conforming to ISO 9001 (Bureau Veritas Certification Certificate No: FIHSK8593185A). Management responsibility, resource management, process management and assessment, analysis and continuous improvement are among the fundamentals included in the ISO 9001 standard. Products are manufactured in accordance with ThermoWood® product specification TR 31. Finotrol conducts annual audits of the manufacturing process (www. finotrol.fi). Finotrol monitors as an outside auditor SLP’s management of the chain of origin for raw materials and the quality of its production. As certification of these, the Finnish Forest Certification System has granted SLP the right to use the PEFC certification of origin and the International ThermoWood Association has granted the right to use the ThermoWood (TMW) quality trademark. The quality of our products is ensured by conducting and monitoring the production and manufacturing process in accordance with the certification and specifications. The quality of each individual product is ensured by recording data from each phase of the process during manufacturing. We know the raw material’s supplier, moisture content and quality. For the thermal treatment process, we record data about the material being treated along with data about the process itself and its course. Samples are also taken in order to monitor the quality uniformity. Width: +/- 1 % Thickness: +/- 0,50 mm Length: - 10 mm, + 30 mm PRODUCT QUALITY SPECIFICATIONS Surface Planed or unplaned. Checks Occasional hairline checks are allowed as long as they do not extend through the board. At the ends of boards, a short through check is allowed. Insect damage Not allowed. Scars and bark pockets Not allowed. Decay Not allowed. Compression wood Permitted only as long as it does not significantly interfere with attaching the cladding boards. Knots with chunks missing Occasional ones are allowed. Knotholes Small knotholes are allowed. Large knotholes (over 10 mm) that substantially interfere with attaching or using the product are not allowed if several such holes are found in an inspected board. Knots Knots of different sizes are allowed. Most of them should be tight. Knots are allowed in accordance with the Nordic timber grading rules. Pitch pockets Small pitch pockets that do not go all the way through are allowed. Heartwood strip A heartwood strip the size of the whole board is allowed. Color Thermally treated wood may exhibit slight variations in color that result from the natural properties of the timber. The chart lists the maximum size and number of flaws in a 1-meter section. Multiple irregularities are allowed as long as the general appearance of the board is of sufficient quality. Quality principles cover 95 % of the delivered products. ILLUSTRATED SUMMARY OF TYPICAL NATURAL PROPERTIES OF WOOD WHICH MAY APPEAR IN OUR PRODUCTS. Small cracks on the surface of the board are allowed. A short through check at the end of a board is allowed. Heartwood strip is allowed.
