NFPA 13 Resources
NFPA 13: Installation of Sprinkler Systems led to NFPA’s formation in 1896, and this
Standard has continued to evolve over more than a century. Today’s new construction
materials and types of storage make water-based fire protection more difficult and
complex, but you’ll be ready to provide the best defense for any occupancy with the
2016 edition—including a critical update to commodity classification tables.

Fire Protection
NFPA 13D and 13R Resources
Sprinklers reduce heat, smoke, and flames so quickly, they can control or even extinguish a fire
before the fire department arrives. Yet tragically, 85% of U.S. civilian fire deaths occur in homes,
where sprinklers are not usually present. Sprinklers could make all the difference, especially in
new construction which tends to burn hotter and faster than traditional construction. NFPA 13D,
NFPA 13R, and their Handbook can help you make the most sensible fire protection the norm!

Fire Protection
NFPA 25 Resources
When sprinklers operate in structure fires, they are effective more than 95% of the time. But
according to a recent NFPA® report, when sprinklers fail to work, it’s generally due to shutoff
before the fire began—as in routine maintenance, inspection, or other manual intervention.
Avoid oversights that could spell disaster. Inspection, testing, and maintenance are so critical
that NFPA 13 requires installers to leave a copy of NFPA 25 with property owners!

NFPA 20 Resources
Today’s designers and engineers have more fire pump options and technologies to
choose from, and NFPA 20 helps ensure systems are ready for action. Work with the
Standard’s clarified and expanded requirements for fire pumps and pumps in series.
All-new coverage of multistage multiport pumps—previously used primarily outside
of North America—add new potential for end-user cost savings.

2015 NFPA 4: Standard for Integrated Fire
Protection and Life Safety System Testing
NFPA 4 presents minimum requirements for
integrated testing and documentation prior to
building occupancy and throughout a building’s
life cycle. The Standard includes the protocol for
testing procedures, responsibilities, methods,
and documentation for verifying the operational
readiness and sequence of integrated systems
for any building. It’s vital for the Integrated
Testing Agent (ITa) and other stakeholders.

For SI units, 1 in. = 25 mm; 1 ft = 0.3 m.
The release of Class I liquids can generate vapors to the extent that the entire building, and possibly an area
surrounding it, should be considered a Class I, Division 2, or Zone 2 location.
2
When classifying extent of area, consideration should be given to the fact that tank cars or tank vehicles can
be spotted at varying points. Therefore, the extremities of the loading or unloading positions should be used.

Health Care
NFPA 99 Resources
Health care facilities shouldn’t jeopardize
the people they are designed to help.
Potentially deadly safety hazards are present in many types of health care environments.
Protect patients and medical staff with NFPA 99: Health Care Facilities Code. Based on
the risk to a patient, rather than the type of facility where procedures take place, NFPA 99
presents special precautions for use around health care services or systems—including
the full range of electrical systems and medical gas/vacuum systems.
