“the Dot” wishes to thank all
members of the Ali Bin Ali family
for contributing to this publication.
We highly value your contributions
and look forward to your
continued input.
Not only have we arrived at the second Edition of “the dot” but we have
also stepped into a brand new year. Looking back over 2011, many of us
will be able to spot the milestones scattered over our professional and
personal lives. They might include achievements, celebrations, losses and
gains. However, one of the most exciting things about ending an era and
stepping into a new season in time is the tremendous possibilities that a
new beginning can bring.
We are very pleased at the overwhelmingly positive feedback we
received for the first edition of “the dot”. We are also delighted that
many of you took the time to express your excitement at having your
own platform to communicate internally.
In a company as large as ours it is easy for a sense of isolation to grow
and one of our goals in brining out this publication was to connect the
extended Ali Bin Ali family. Your feedback has confirmed that “the dot”
is on the way to achieve that goal. Sustaining that sense of connection is
also something that lies in all our hands.
So, as you flip through these pages we hope they will inspire you to
think of your own contributions for the next issue. Think about sharing
your achievements, articulating your visions, inspiring and equipping one
another, commending your teams, celebrating your victories. This is what
the pages of “the dot” have been dedicated for.
Returning once again to the year that lies ahead of us, those of us at
CorpComm., are ready to gain new ground, overcome challenges and
reach new heights in all aspects of our work and we are pleased to assist
the members of the Ali Bin Ali family in what ever way possible. Let’s
share our strengths and support each other. Let’s use our competencies
to contribute towards achieving bigger and better things in the months
ahead. We look forward to working in partnership with you to make
2012 an outstanding year for everyone at Ali Bin Ali Group!

Ali Bin Ali Logistics opens a new operation in
Logistics Village Qatar
Ali Bin Ali Logistics was happy
to announce that from the 1st of
July 2011 they have begun
operating from a new Hi-Bay
Warehouse, located in Logistics
Village Qatar (LVQ). This facility
represents a big leap in the
facilities used by the
warehousing operation as it
provides storage to a height of
15 meters and utilizes
specialized equipment, which is
capable of functioning in very
narrow aisles. Overall this
facility will provide an additional
15,000 pallet locations. This
greatly increases our Logistics
storage capacity, which has now
increased by more than 65%.
This places Ali Bin Ali Logistics in
an optimum position to meet
the growth requirements of the
FMCG Stream stretching out till
2014/15.
To mark this important event
Logistics Division arranged for all
staff to visit the location, a
breakfast was provided and the
GM, Jon Mayson spoke to all
staff about the importance of
the move to the location and
the changes that are planned for
Logistics in the coming years.
It was also the largest gathering
of Logistics Division staff in the
division’s history with more than
200 staff members were
present. To celebrate this
occasion a huge group
photograph was taken, although
getting everyone including
proved something of an
organizational and logistical

are partnering Qatar Foundation, one
of the nation’s leading educational
bodies. Having proposed this notable
collaboration Ali Bin Ali Group has
presented a mentoring opportunity

Unlike most mentoring efforts the Ali

in this effort will not just receive a
sponsorship but also targeted
exposure to a variety of fields of
work. Since the group has multiple

reflected our commitment to the

growth of professionalism among the
youth of this country. So we came up

computer systems, and
associated components,
such as servers,
enterprise/systems
applications, services,
network, Internet
services,
telecommunications,
storage and security
systems.
ABA Capability Infrastructure Initiative: Overview & Update
ABA DATA CENTER
ABA DATA CenTeR hosts following IT services:
1 - ERP/Business Applications (EMIS/HRSM/E-Travel/Survey/Essbase etc)
2 - Centralized Database Services
3 - Network/Windows Logon
4 - File Sharing (DFS) and backup

13 - Storage Area Network
IT operations are a crucial aspect
of most organizational operations
and ABA business is relying on the
information systems to run the
operations. If a system becomes
unavailable, group’s operations
may be impaired or stopped
completely. It is necessary to
provide a reliable infrastructure
for IT operations, in order to
minimize any chance of
disruption. Hence, ABA DATA
CenTeR is built with high
12
standards for assuring the
integrity and functionality of its
hosted computer environment.
This is accomplished through
redundancy of Servers,
Networking and security devices
and Qtel’s Internet/MPLS services
and the infrastructure capacity
components guaranteeing
99.70% availability.
The physical environment of a
data center is rigorously
controlled. Redundant Air
conditioning
systems is used to control the
temperature(16 – 20°C) and
humidity range of 40–55%.
ABA DATA CenTeR is equipped
with Fire rated walls and roof,
Fire Protection system(FM200)
and centralized alarm system to
alert incidents due to fire, water
leak, temperature and humidity.
Physical security also plays a
large role with ABA DATA CenTeR.
Physical access to the site is
restricted to selected
personnel and it is controlled
by access control devices and
the access is video recorded.
This critical data center is
managed by IT Infrastructure
Team to ensure all IT services are
available for the business
24hrs/7days. Currently the team
is working towards Cloud
Computing which will enable the
business to access data center
services from anywhere in the
world on any computing system
including mobile or portable
devices.
As part of our ongoing transformation
journey, we are
embarking on a
series of workshops
to complete the
second of our eight
strategic objectives
endorsed by the EVP
and Operating Board
– building a
Capability
Infrastructure for the
ABA Group. Iftekhar
Ahmad, Group CFO is
the executive sponsor
of this initiative.
A Capability Infrastructure
involves defining,
establishing, and maintaining
an integrated competence
management framework to
enable the organization to
measure jobs and individuals
accurately, so we can recruit,
develop, deploy and reward
talent for strategic impact. In
simple terms, a key outcome
of the project will be a
detailed role profile for each
employee, specifying the
different competencies he or
she needs to succeed in the
job, and a job description
outlining the activities and
characteristics of the job. As
an overview, the below figure
shows the various elements
of a capability infrastructure:
Components of this
infrastructure are the building
blocks and critical enablers of
many strategically vital
people processes such as
recruitment, leadership
development, talent and
succession management,
compensation and rewards. If
we establish this foundational
HR infrastructure correctly, our
people processes and
practices become integrated,
efficient, and competitive.
Wadih Kazan was the project
lead of the first project –
Developing Competence
Models. Assisted by a senior
cross-functional team, Wadih
spearheaded a series of
workshops in the first half of
2011 working with various
leaders to identify
competencies that are
important across
the diverse
professional roles
within the group,
also known as
job families. The
competencies
have been
categorized into
three, namely:
(1) Leadership
Competencies –
the skills and behaviour that
form the yardsticks on which
ABA’s leadership culture is
formed, (2) Core
Competencies - the
capabilities that are
fundamental to all ABA
employees regardless of role,
and (3) Functional
Competencies – the
knowledge and skills required
to perform a particular type or
level of work for each job
family, such as accountants,
merchandisers, etc.
The ABA Competency Models
Directory was finalized in
August 2011 and the output
used to move forward with
the second phase –
Developing Job Descriptions.
Employee job descriptions are
written statements that
describe the responsibilities,
and key characteristics of a
particular job. They help
communicate the company’s
expectations of each role and
how it fits inside the big
picture.
P.K. Ganesh is the project lead
for this second project, and
has led a series of workshops
starting in May 2011,
supported by a crossfunctional core team, to
develop Job Descriptions for
all roles across the group. The
core team has been working
with each division on
developing Job Descriptions
following a standardized ABA
model.
Once the Job Descriptions are
finalized, the third phase – Job
evaluation – will be rolled
out, which will involve
valuation of the job roles
using the Hay Scale enabling
calibration and
alignment of
job grades.
employee
Assessment
will take place
concurrently.
In summary,
competence
models will be
used for
employee
assessment,
and job
descriptions
will be used
for job
evaluations.
The main
outcomes of the Capability
Infrastructure project so far:
about 35 competence models
have been developed for each
job family, a comprehensive
job description writing toolkit
has been created for
managers, 380+ standard job
descriptions are in the final
stages of being written for
each discrete role to be
further tailored for each of the
approximately 2400 jobs in
the company.

A thought process in a right way
The topic positive
thinking is not new to
any one of us. In fact in
our daily professional
and personal life, we
keep hearing it from our
friends, colleagues in the
form of advice, especially
when we are upset or
not in a pleasant mood.
But how far people have
been successful in
applying this in their
daily lives? Does positive
thinking means only
talking in a positive way
or discussing it?
A famous American
author and a
motivational trainer Zig
Ziglar has quoted about
this term as under:
You can find unlimited articles on
this topic right from Stephen Covey
to today’s Ron Kauffman.
So much has been said about it and
I have witnessed in people’s life
that failure comes to them just
because their thinking and actions
are not being positive enough.
Remember there is an old saying
that “ENERGY FOLLOWS THOUGHT”.
no positive thinking
A good opinion about yourself.
Remember if you don’t like
yourself, then others also won’t.
We all have different abilities that
makes us special and unique.
Recognizing self abilities and
having self belief will help you to
achieve success in your life which is
the most important step towards
positive thinking.
can get you anything, but it can get
everything better than
negative thinking can” 16
In my personal experience, I
realized that just by thinking
positively you cannot achieve
anything. In fact, the kind of
positive thinking a lot of people
discuss today is in a way running
away from reality of life. There is no
doubt that it is great to think as well
as speak positive. But to achieve
the desired results i.e. transforming
your thoughts to action, it has to be
supported by your ability and skill
that will synchronize with your
positive thinking.
How we can use positive thinking
to maximize the blessings that life
has to offer. So, you are a positive
thinker if you: Have full faith in yourself and
see yourself in positive angle.
Life cannot be without
problems. But there are solutions
too. Rather thinking and discussing
about the problems, analyze the
situation and discover the solutions
because you don’t have to find
them, they come along with the
problems.
Accept challenges in life and
think of growing further. This
thinking will help you to get the
best out of yourself to achieve
continuous success in your life.
Don’t forget the fact that positive
thinking also demands to accept
challenges to improve your skills
and abilities. Do not stay with
what you have. Try to improve. No
matter even if you have to fail or
lose, learn it. It is not a failure but
your learning experience which
will make you a; better person.
Intelligent people learn from their
mistakes and grow further.
Always be ready to go to the
step called neXT. Learn to accept
rejection and move forward. It is a
history that successful sales people
in the world have faced the
maximum rejection in their life
which is one of the major
inspirations to make them move
forward.
Accepting changes and to
modify yourself is also one of
the key strength of positive
thinking. If a particular action is
giving you a same result, change it
and try a new one. To have belief in
self is a positive thinking but at the
same time, it is of no use to feel
positive when your action plan is
not giving you the desired result.
Learn to differentiate between
your destination and your route
that you have chosen to reach
there. Have a focus on your dreams
and goals and be ready to change
the route if situation demands.
Have hope and faith in
whatever you do. In any given
situation, even if you had to lose
anything, that is material, but if
you lose your hope, you have lost
everything. Because hope and faith
are the key factors of life that helps
us to move forward without
looking back.
When you are performing a
task give it your 100%
commitment and leave the
result in hands of God. Do not
get disheartened if our efforts are
not producing desired results, it
means the supreme has got better
plans for us.
Lastly thank God for not only for
what you have but also for what
you have been denied as there
are bigger blessings in store for
you.

Principles of
leadership
1. Know yourself and seek self-improvement
- In order to know yourself, you have to understand
your be, know, and do, attributes. Seeking selfimprovement means continually strengthening your
attributes. This can be accomplished through selfstudy, formal classes, reflection, and interacting with
others.
2. Be technically proficient - As a leader, you
must know your job and have a solid familiarity with
your employees' tasks.
3. Seek responsibility and take responsibility
for your actions - Search for ways to guide your
organization to new heights. And when things go
wrong, they always do sooner or later — do not
blame others. Analyze the situation, take corrective
action, and move on to the next challenge.
4. Make sound and timely decisions - Use good
problem solving, decision making, and planning tools.
5. Set the example - Be a good role model for
your employees. They must not only hear what they
are expected to do, but also see. We must become
the change we want to see - Mahatma Gandhi
6. Know your people and look out for their
well-being - Know human nature and the
importance of sincerely caring for your workers.
7. Keep your workers informed - Know how to
communicate with not only them, but also seniors
and other key people.
8. Develop a sense of responsibility in your
workers - Help to develop good character traits that
will help them carry out their professional
responsibilities.
9. ensure that tasks are understood,
supervised, and accomplished - Communication
is the key to this responsibility.
10. Train as a team - Although many so called
leaders call their organization, department, section,
etc. a team; they are not really teams...they are just a
group of people doing their jobs.

Recycle! Recycle!! Recycle!!!
Everyone talks about it as if it’s
something really important: But is it

and even in magazines like The Dot. And
if we start paying close attention chances
are we will even stat noticing, a number
of Recycling Bins set up here and there

recycling so important? How does it

While many of us have an idea of
what recycling is and why it is
important, few of us actually
understand the recycling process.
The answer is yes. Recycled paper
can be used in the manufacturing
of about 37% of all fibre based
materials we use in our day to
day lives. Recovered paper is
used constantly all across the
world to make new products.
Recycling paper also helps our
communities by keeping it out of
landfills and incinerators. The
paper that is recovered for
recycling helps improve the
environment and produce new
paper products that we use,
thereby stopping us from

Contrary to what some people
may think, paper recycling is not
a new idea. In fact, the process of
making paper out of recovered
materials is quite old. Prior to the

contaminants such as glass,
plastics, paperclips and staples are
removed. Once the recovered
paper is free of contaminants, it is
baled and transported to a paper
mill where the recycling process
begins. To begin the papermaking
process using recovered fiber, the
fiber is shredded and mixed with
water to make a pulp. The pulp is
washed, refined, and cleaned,
then turned to slush in a beater.
Colour dyes, coatings, and other
additives are mixed in, and the
pulp slush is pumped onto a large

PAPeR FACTS
• Forests are being cut and trees
are being felled at an
unimaginable rate of 100 acres
per minute. All this to produce
paper which is normally used and
disposed without much thought.
• A plant takes a minimum of 15
to 20 years to grow into a tree,
but takes less than ten minutes to
be felled, and on an average one
tree can yield about 700 paper
grocery bags, which will be
consumed in less than an hour by

into the sea kills and destroys sea
life at an estimated 1,000,000 sea
creatures per year!
GLASS FACTS
• Glass is one of the very few
products that can be completely
recycled again and again. But
most often times, it ends up in
landfills and never decomposes.
• There is an increased demand
for recycled glass referred to as
“cullet” in the glass industry. This
is because cullet or recycled glass
costs much less than raw material
used to manufacture glass from
scratch. Cullet also consumes very
little electricity, thereby
conserving energy, which
translates to decrease in carbon
dioxide and nitrogen oxide, which
The finished paper is then wound
into large rolls, which can be 30
feet wide and weigh close to 25
tons. A slitter cuts the paper into
smaller, more manageable rolls,
and the paper is ready for use in
your school, workplace, and
community.
Paper that is recycled begins life
again as part of the products that
we use in our every day life.
Recycling is good for the
environment, good for business,
and good for the community.
So let’s commit to Recycling – it
can start with you!
• Energy used to recycle paper is
close to 70% less than when
paper is prepared using virgin
wood and other raw material.
• Recycling 14 trees worth of
paper reduces air pollutants by
165,142 tons.
PLASTIC FACTS
LeT CHAnGe BeGIn WITH Me!
The Dot investigated Recycling options in Qatar and we came up
with two choices. If you would like to commit to Recycling of either

• Almost every hour, nearly
250,000 plastic bottles are
dumped. It is not surprising that
plastic bottles constitute close to
50% of recyclable waste in the
dumps.
• The average time taken by
plastic bottles to decompose in a
landfill is close to 700 years.
• Plastic not only adds to landfill
space and takes forever to
are greenhouse gases that
contribute to the carbon footprint.
• Glass and plastic take the
longest to decompose but are
completely recyclable, therefore,
it is important to purchase,
recycle, and reuse both glass and
plastic products. If one can replace
both these with any other
recyclable or biodegradable
products one must certainly invest
in the same!
STYROFOAM FACTS
• A Styrofoam coffee cup
discarded today will remain in
landfill space for close to 500
years. This is because it does not
get decomposed easily, ie. it is
not bio-degradable. Therefore, it
is advisable to say, “no,” to
Styrofoam products.

to ease Winter woes
The winters are just around the corner! Sipping hot cocoa
while you curl up with your favourite book every night…
Delightful!!! But sometimes the cold and chill just gets to
you and then the fun vanishes into thin air. The worst side
effects of winter season are the runny nose, the sniffs and
the aches. Yes you can suppress the symptoms by taking
allopathic medications; however, the symptoms are bound
to spring back. Choosing the herbal way of life will help
you ease the symptoms and hasten up your recovery time.
The following five herbs are best to beat the winter chill.

5Herbs
TOP
1. Mint: A
piping cup of Mint
tea is really
effective in
opening up clogged nose and ease sore
throats because mint is one of the best
sources of naturally occurring menthol.
Having it quite often in winter season
reduces the need for medications for
pulmonary congestion. Menthol from
mint also helps in bringing down the
fever. Mint is also beneficial for the
stomach. The best way to consume mint
is by using chopped mint leaves for
garnishing or by having mint tea.
2. Ginger: The warm and spicy taste
of ginger makes it a chef’s delight all
around the world. For long people have
used it to improve digestion, moreover,
various studies have also verified its
effectiveness
against
nausea.
Ginger also
has
tremendous
antiviral as
well as
antimicrobial
properties, so having ginger will
definitely help you get well soon
whenever you feel sick. Again ginger is
best in its raw form; hence topping any
meal with minced ginger will do
wonders for you health in the winter
season. You can also enjoy hot ginger tea
in this cold whether to soothe the chill
(Boil one teaspoon of crushed ginger in
water, strain the water, add honey and
sip it like tea while its still hot.) Just like
garlic, talk to your doctor is you are
about to undergo a surgery or if you are
on any prescribed drugs. Herbal ginger
tablets are also quite easily available.
3. Chili Peppers: Every time I eat
chiles I get those watery-eyed and runny
nose as well as strange sensation in my
throat. Chili peppers have anti
inflammatory attributes, they may be
successful in providing you with relief
when you feel kind of achy. Next time
you are having soup add little chiles to it,
the runny nose will help you get rid of
blocked mucous.
proved it time and again that Garlic has
antiviral, antifungal as well as
antiprotozoal attributes. Garlic is best
consumed raw, cooking it reduces its
medicinal properties. Chopped garlic can
used to whip up delicious sauces and as
seasoning over most dishes. You can also
add garlic to the medicinal chicken soup
for multiple benefits. Garlic is best
consumed raw, however, if you find the
smell unpleasant you can also take
herbal garlic supplements. But always
keep in mind to consult your doctor if
you are about to undergo a surgery or
you are taking anticoagulant drugs.
5. Chamomile: This is a little
flowered herb that comforts the stomach
and unwinds the mind, body and soul. It
has active mind-musculus calming
properties, thus it aids in easing aches in
winters.
4. Garlic: This is one herb that has
been labeled as a panacea in each and
every herbal journal I have come across.
Garlic has loads and loads of healing
properties, but its best known for its anti
cold properties. Lots of studies have

My heartfelt and sincere congratulations to Mr Adel Ali Bin Ali and Mr. Nabil Ali Bin Ali on this
new and first edition of "The Dot". It was a great read and I did enjoy it thoroughly. It filled
me with nostalgia, taking me back to the good old days. It brought me to reminisce my 15+
years first under their dear late father Mr. Ali Bin Ali and than under their leadership.
I must say though, I do envy the changes since I left and that is only because I am not part of
it. But that was destiny.
Congratulations too on the website which is open and informative. I was able to find a few familiar names known to me and was happy to note their climb in the organisational structure.

I and my family surely miss Doha. It was home away from home and Ali Bin Ali will always
remain my special place of comfort. A place where I was afforded the opportunity to go the
distance in its organisational structure. I was a youth with ambition and they recognized and
nurtured it and I was sailing under their tutelage.

company. Through this section, we aim to bring out the creative side of the employees.
writing, it happens all of a sudden
and in any time of the day, I tend
to write more at the night time
where I can find my inner-peace
and words would just go on and
on. I publish my poems through
my blog online at regular intervals.
What are your future aspirations
as a poet/writer?
My dream is to publish my own
poetry book one day
Sara Ismail Al Amir Tamer
ABA Group, Head Office
Hi Sara, Can you please give us a
brief intro about yourself?
I’m Sara Ismail Al Amir Tamer,
Personal Assistant to Mrs. Hind Ali
Bin Ali.
How long have you been with
Ali Bin Ali?
It’s been exactly 2 beautiful years
now with ABA.
Ok, so tell us what are your
hobbies & interests?
I like to write poetry, read mystery
novels & I enjoy swimming…
Oh! Wow…You write Poetry that
is interesting. So Sara, Please
tell us how & when you started
writing poetry?
I started writing poetry when I was
15 years old that is all because of
my beloved father I wanted to
follow & his passion for writing. He
used to be a very famous writer in
Qatar Radio Station for over 35
years, he was the one who once
told me: "if you don't know how to
speak out your feelings, write it
down and keep it"
What are your favorite themes
or topics to write on?
Goodbies, family, sadness,
Romance
Having read some of your
poems, can you tell us why you
to write such melancholy in this
age? Any particular reasons?
It’s because of the sad events that
I have been through in my life, like
the loss of my father 4 years ago.
Who are your favorite poets?
I enjoy the Arabic poet “Nizar
Khabanni” & “Khalil Gibran”
Ok, so usually how often do you
write and publish?
I can't put a time limit to my
30
Do you believe that the art of
poetry writing is powerful? If
yes, can you tell us why?
Yes , it is one of the most powerful
thing you could be able to do in
life , not only to write it , but to
get the chance to express the
feelings and thoughts that goes
thru your mind and be able to
share it in such elegant way . also
, the pride that you feel when you
go back on what you wrote in
years and be able to read it and
like it and even shead a tear for it .
Have you ever written anything
related to your work life?
Actually no, Cuz I try to separate
my work life out of my personal
life
Please tell us a few lines from
your favorite poem..
Memory of a Rose
Standing tall ..
No matter how many times
I fall ..
I stay Strong ...
I come with too many colors
Just to light up your day...
You send me to your lover
With a note ..
I'll Love you all the way ..
And when you cry
You would hold me so tight
And blame me ..
Till Im full of tears
Full of lonly nights..
Gotta tell you a secret
I may seem so small
But I know it all
I know it when you're sad
And I know it when you're happy
I may sound so quite
But In the heart
Is where you'll find me
Goodbye
on November
To my Beloved Father
Goodbye on November.
Sweet lullaby... Before I go to sleep
You used to read all that for me
And kiss me on my cheek so that I can dream
You showed me a world that's so real
A little child with no pain
You used to carry me all the way
We used to laugh we used to share
We used to live we used to care
Where have you been, why did you have to surrender
Leaving' you're little child to remember
All the memories when I used to lay on your shoulder
You welcomed me into this world and said goodbye on
November
Nothing will change the way I feel
Cuz I've lost….. you and me ..
Even if in time I'll start to see
Something new in my life
You'll always be the one in my mind
You made me the lady I am
When you used to teach me all the way
We used to laugh we used to share
We used to live we used to care
Where have you been, why did you have to surrender
Leaving' you're little child to remember
All the memories when I used to lay on your shoulder
You welcomed me into this world and said goodbye on
November

HUNT
Breakin' my heart but you'll be fine
Safe above with the lord up high..
Heaven will only smile
Cuz you're there inside
And nothing will worry you..
Everythin' will be all right..
Just hold me tight
Like you do every time..
I'll wait for you...
In my dreams ..
Promise me and I'll sleep ..
.. forever ..
That was very beautiful Sara. Thank You very much for
your time & all the best to you in all your endeavors…
Thank you.
The pleasure is mine.
