LITTER LAW
Litter Law
Tarp your Load!
Ohio law REQUIRES all loads to be covered and secured
when transported on public roads.
Do your part to keep our roads safe and clean!!
Cover and secure your load.
Improperly covered and unsecured loads are subject to citation.
Persons dumping solid waste or littering the public right-of-way will be cited.
Cigarette Litter Prevention
Carry a portable or pocket ashtray when
smoking outside.
Encourage smokers to be aware of where their cigarette will
be discarded when they light up. Whether smokers are outside
public buildings, in parks, on beaches or city sidewalks, a little
planning will reduce the number of butts and cigar tips that end
up on the ground.
Use a proper receptacle to dispose of cigarette butts and cigar tips.
Ash receptacles are needed at the places where people must stop smoking before they
proceed. These are called “transition points.” Ash receptacles at transition points remind
smokers to properly dispose of cigarette butts.
Don’t throw butts out car windows.
Place cigarette butts and cigar tips in a car ashtray, a portable auto ashtray (which fits in the
cup holder), or a container with a secure top.
Be aware of local litter ordinances.
Many communities have litter ordinances that include cigarette butt litter. These are
enforceable and carry penalties.
Education
We’re Here to Educate!
Keep Toledo/Lucas County Beautiful, Inc. (KT/LCB) is committed to
helping educators prepare our future leaders with information about
the environment! In addition to providing a lending library of
information and resources, we are available for classroom
presentations for students of all ages.
Earth Exploring Experiences Offered:
“Riley’s Adventure” Puppet Show
A FREE 30 minute school-wide puppet show that is
centered around the “Re-Ways” (reduce, reuse and
recycle). Our main character, Riley, is transported to
different versions of our community so he can see
firsthand what will happen if we don’t take care of our
environment. (Must have 30+students)
Pack To Reduce
Students work in groups to determine whether or not
the contents of sample lunches are reusable or
recyclable. Then they make presentations about the
lunches to the class. Other topics discussed are
nutrition, cost, convenience, and litter.
Paper Pin Decorating
Students decorate handmade pins, made from
recycled paper.
The Incredible Edible Landfill
Students build a model landfill out of pudding and pie
crust. This is one landfill they won't mind eating at the
Tin Can Papermaking
end!
Each student makes one sheet of recycled paper.

samples.
Call our Education Specialist at 419.213.2252 or submit an online request
at www.ktlcb.org to schedule a presentation.
Adopt-A-Road/Street
Volunteer groups and organizations are being given an
opportunity to accept the responsibility for removing litter and other
debris from a 2-mile section of the Lucas County roadways or streets.
The purpose of this program is to instill community pride, raise public
awareness and to improve the appearance of our streets throughout
Lucas County.
An interested group will be responsible for cleaning a 2-mile
section of roadway a minimum of four times a year for a two-year
period. In return, signs will be installed on-site displaying the name of
the participating organization or group. Additionally, collection bags,
safety equipment, and debris disposal will be provided to each group.
For more information, call KT/LCB at 419.213.2255.
Learning about up-coming recycling events and
litter cleanups is as easy as 1-2-3!
