OFFICE OF THE MAYOR County of Maui 200 South High Street Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii 96793 A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR ALAN M. ARAKAWA Aloha, Welcome to the Maui County Recycling, Refuse & Landfill Guide, where you will find the most up-to-date information on how and where to recycle and reuse items, dispose of trash and even make a little money in the process. As our County continues to grow, it is important that we make wise decisions about how we handle items and materials that are no longer of use to us. Some of these items may be useful to others, and we ask that you take a little time to make sure these items reach the appropriate people and organizations. Other materials can be recycled, and now more than ever it is vital that we recycle everything we can. Please take the time to learn what kinds of items can be recycled at our County recycling centers, as well as those that can be recycled in other ways. For items that cannot be reused or recycled, we have our hard-working ‘Opala Pickers, the dedicated County refuse collectors who ensure your trash is handled properly and safely. Please follow directions carefully if you visit the landfills; our expert landfill staff members are there to assist you, and to help protect our ‘aina. Working together, we can make sure that the paradise we call home continues to be the beautiful, clean and safe place we all know and love. Mahalo for your kokua, Alan M. Depending on the timing, some will still receive the next scheduled delivery, but subsequent issues should cease to arrive. 11 Use a reusable lunch box instead of a paper bag to carry your lunch. You won’t have to throw away a paper bag every day! When you make a purchase, don’t take a bag unless you need one. Rent items you use infrequently, rather than purchase them. Wrap your gifts in a cloth bag so it can be used over again. Use cloth napkins instead of paper ones. Use a sponge or cloth rag instead of paper towels. Always look for items with little or no packaging. Use reusable plastic or glass containers for food instead of plastic bags. Use rechargeable batteries instead of disposable ones. Go online or to the library to read your favorite magazine, book or newspaper rather than purchasing them. Use plates, cups and utensils you can wash instead of paper plates, cups and plastic utensils that you have to throw away. Purchase items in concentrate (such as juice and detergent) when possible. Choose products in recyclable or refillable containers. Avoid buying food items in single serve containers. 12 THRIFT STORES & CONSIGNMENT SHOPS The following list is current to the best of our knowledge at the time of printing.
