IN STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
Photos by Darin Jester
It was a double header for the new Indiana State Champion, Natalie Atwood,
pictured with Charlie Cambre, Department Manager of the Cicero Friends of
the Park, as she ended the day winning 1st Place Chili and 1st Place Salsa.
CICERO, IN - The weather was perfect and the crowd was
plenty on September 15, 2012 for the INDIANA STATE CHILI
CHAMPIONSHIP. Reigning Terlingua International Chili
Champion Larry Walton joined us and learned how to make chili
‘Hoosier’ style. Proceeds when back to the Cicero Friends of the
Park. Thanks to all of the cooks and volunteers who made the day
a big success! A special thanks to Renfro Foods, and Bruce Foods
for their continued support to CASI and to Indiana.

October 2012
With the 2012 Great Peppers Meeting in our rear view mirror, it is on to Terlingua in
almost no time. Still, what an informative and productive meeting it was including all the
breakout sessions. As always there were many people and sponsors that donated their
time, energy and products to making the meeting so good. Thanks to each and every one
that made it possible. For those that attended, one of the highlights was a session led by
Richard Knight on the topic of “Where Does CASI Go From Here?” There was such a
wonderful outflow of ideas from so many people. I believe the interactive session will help
revitalize us all and help move the organization forward. On display also was the unveiling
of the CASI Museum, an online museum brought to life by the Apple Dumpling Gang.
The new casichili.net website was also unveiled. While both are works in progress, it was great to see substantial
movements forward in these areas.
Congratulations to our newly elected directors Richard Knight and Randy Duke and to those reelected to
continue serving CASI Darin Jester, Robert “Wappo” Schrade and Roger Foltz. For our retiring directors Janice
Miller and Dana Plocheck, you received well deserved standing ovations for your dedication to CASI and jobs
well done.
Whether or not you earned your points to cook or show, you are welcome to come to Terlingua. There will
be so much to do and so many people to see, it’s getting to the point that one week is just not enough time.
Rancho CASI de los Chisos awaits your arrival.
Ed Blair
Reflections from the ED
I would like to thank all those who gave me a vote of confidence to allow me to serve
as Executive Director of CASI for the next two years. It is a real privilege and pleasure to
be able to represent your interests for the next two years in such a remarkable
organization. I will do whatever is within my power to enhance the communication,
infrastructure and historic and cultural heritage that help to make CASI such a wonderful
charitable organization.
A special thanks to each person that made the Great Peppers meeting held in Irving,
Texas last month a very enjoyable and successful event. Thanks to Lee Kroencke’s IT
Committee for the development of the new CASI website (www.CASIChili.net) that
allows submission of upcoming CASI events, submission of CASI cookoff results, and submission of CASI
membership requests directly online. A special thanks to The Apple Dumpling Gang (society of ex-members of
the CASI’s board of directors) for developing the new CASI Museum, which can be reviewed at www.chili.org.
I also take this opportunity to thank Janice Miller for her volunteer service to CASI and serving as Executive
Director for the last four years. Janice will continue to serve CASI as Great Pepper of the Concho Valley Pod.
Recognition also goes to Dana Plocheck for an extraordinary job serving as Terlingua Trails Editor. As you see
these two retiring board members, completing their duties at TICC this year, take a minute to stop and says
“thanks” for their service and devotion to CASI.
CASI will face serious challenges over the coming years, which I am sure working together we can
overcome. I would like however to take this opportunity to encourage more of you to get involved. CASI and
your Pod are only as vibrant as its members make it. I challenge everyone to use the resource center on the
website to review the CASI cookoff rules and guidelines for running a smooth event. We have a few new
regional referees and great peppers that will need everyone’s support and guidance.
Good luck to everyone at our 46th Terlingua International Chili Championship this year. This year’s TICC is
stacked full of traditional events as well as some new events ….Charity, Chili, and Fun in the desert. See you
there.

I am so excited to be appointed as the new CASI
Scholarship Program Administrator. I realize that I have some
big shoes to fill. Barbara Herrin has done a wonderful job.
The organization and notes that she has kept will help me
tremendously.
I encourage each Great Pepper to appoint someone in
their Pod to handle the scholarship applications. There are
so many young people out there deserving of our help and
you will receive great delight in getting to know these
students by reading their applications.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to
contact me. Anyone wanting to serve as a committee member
should also contact me.

CASI Scholarship Program Administrator
New CASI Membership Director
I want to personally take this opportunity to thank each and every one of
you for allowing me to serve the past two years as your Membership Director.
As we transition into the new chili year, I want to welcome Glenda Vrba in to
her new role on the board as the CASI Membership Director. I will be working
with Glenda over the next few weeks to make the transition as quickly and as
smoothly as possible. Effective October 1st, 2012 I am asking each of you to
start sending your renewals to Glenda. I will be working and training her so as
there will be limited to no interruptions in processing your renewals and our new
members.
All renewals, new members, as well as Corporate and Lifetime payments
need to be mailed to: CASI, P O Box 450907, Garland, TX 75045.
Again thank you for your continued support to CASI, our Charity’s, and our
Mission to make a difference through the promotion of chili.
Faithfully serving,
Darin P. Jester

2012 SPONSOR REPORT
ALCALDE REPORT
2012 has been another record year for the CASI
sponsorship program.
The Legacy Sponsorship program has now
funded three of the building facilities at Rancho CASI
de los Chisos with this year’s introduction of the new
Si Brown Original Louisiana Hot Sauce Pavilion in
Krazy Flats. A sponsorship at this level requires a
minimum $25,000.00 investment.
The Gold Sponsorship level has achieved record
status with the elevation of Mild Bill’s Spices and
HEB/Tyson Foods to the ranks. This gives us an all
time high of nine gold sponsors contributing a minimum
of $10,000.00 annually.
The Silver Sponsorship level is represented by five sponsors contributing
a $5,000.00 investment with the elevation of Outlaw Cigar Co and the addition
of Choctaw Casino and RV Resort.
We have achieved a record level of participation from Terlingua Area
Sponsors. It has never been our policy to solicit funding from the local
Brewster County area. Our goal has always been to “give” to the area and not
“take”. We do, however, accept commitments and association if we are
approached. More of the local enterprises have voiced appreciation of CASI
and expressed a desire to invest in our event. Stop by Cycletek, High Sierra/
El Dorado, Far Flung, Lajitas Golf Resort, Easter Egg Motel and Big
Bend Resort when you are in the area. We have invested in the local
Chamber of Commerce and expanded our visibility in the area.
I cannot say enough about the growth of our “Friends of CASI” level of
sponsorship. “Friends of CASI” successfully underwrote all the CASI
Awards at the 2011 TICC. A contribution from Ancira Motorhomes this year
allowed a new scholarship for the Terlingua Big Bend High School Salutatorian
for a total of two $4,000.00 scholarships to the CASI Scholarship Fund. We are
looking for other opportunities to serve CASI. It is gratifying to see so many
CASI members and Pods in this group. That is truly beyond the call of duty.
We will have many nice gifts to offer the 2011 TICC Winner. Sponsored
items will depart with the champion to take the pain out of hauling that Big
Pepper away. My only regret is that we didn’t start this program years earlier. I
also wish we could make it retroactive to our many fine champions of the past.
Travel allowance was initiated two years ago to assist the TICC Winner in
representing CASI around the world. This is a valuable tool in our public
relations and solicitation of Sponsors.
Sponsorship has assisted in underwriting the Great Pepper Meeting as
the BOD takes over that obligation this year. That influence will grow in future
years.
We have a record 56 sponsors as this posting is printed in late August.
The bottom line is approaching $200,000.00 in cash, goods, and services
this year. There are many other projects pending that could still come to fruition
before year end. The key to our sponsor program is the retention of the
contributors we already have signed. That way we don’t have to start over and
reinvent the wheel each year. It falls on sponsorship to adequately communicate
and work with the sponsors, as well as the CASI membership to support the
products and services. Our membership has a great track record when it comes
to support of our sponsors. Obviously, our financial well being depends on it. It is
something to be proud of. It sets us aside from many organizations that can only
envy our program.
Thank you for your support. Forgive me if I push a little hard, but the
CASI sponsors are my clients. I have to protect their interest and investment.
Thank you for sending me back to the Board of Directors this past year to help
with whatever I can.
Hello my Friends, as most of you are aware we are
just one month away from TICC so I would like to
remind you of a few items:
• This is an election year and I would like to announce
that I am once again running for Alcalde.
• There will be an Old 320 Meeting in the Mexene
Judging Pavilion on Friday, November 2nd, immediately
after announcements of all the Scholarship Cookoff
Events.
• Volunteers are needed to help with the marking of the
cooking sites in the Old 320 Arena on Wednesday,
October 31st, around 9:30 a.m. I appreciate everyone’s
response to my request in the past years and hope I can depend on you again
this year. You can email me at rhay16@comcast.net.
• If you will not be using your cooking site in the Old 320 Arena and are willing
to let someone else cook on it or if you have given someone permission to use
your site please let me know. I need to know either way because we have
many new qualified cooks that are coming to Terlingua and they would like to
cook in the Old 320 Arena.
• All Pods that have an Old 320 Site, I need to know who the POD MEMBER
is that will be cooking on the Pod’s Site.
• Cooks that do not have their own Old 320 Cooking Site yet want to cook in the
arena, please come see me after you register to cook. I will be behind the stage
during registration times.
• We are still taking orders from Pods for The Wall Plaques. The cost of the
plaque is $200.00 and it dresses up the wall to the North side of the Old 320
Arena. If you need a form call me and I will mail you one. Must receive form
by 10/13/12 in order to have plaque by TICC.
• We will be giving away two (2) Wendell Rankin stoves again this year but you
have to cook in the arena to be eligible for the drawing. I would appreciate two
volunteers, preferably not cooking, to pass out the raffle tickets after the cooks
have set up, approximately around 9:00 or 10:00 a.m. You do NOT have to be
an Old 320 Member to cook in the Arena.
• I am still lacking Profiles from some of you members. You may not consider
this as an important issue, but these Profiles are a huge help to the Alcalde and
CASI.
Thank you all. May everyone have a safe trip to the Ranch; I can’t wait to
see you.

TICC GATE POLICY
BEER and WINE AT TICC 2012
QUALIFIED COOK: Each listed qualified cook receives one (1)
wristband. A husband and wife who are both qualified receive only one (1)
wristband each. A second wristband will be given to the qualified cook if their
spouse or friend is with them and are not qualified. Qualified cooks DO NOT
receive additional wristbands if they are also Old 320 members and/or captains
of a show team.
SHOW TEAMS: Each listed Show Team Captain receives one (1)
wristband only if they are NOT qualified to cook or an Old 320 member.
Qualified cooks or Old 320 members DO NOT receive wristbands in addition
to the Show Team Captain wristband.
Members of listed Show Teams will pay to enter the gate and receive a
spectator’s wristband. They will then proceed to the registration area behind
the stage and will be reimbursed for their entry fee and given the appropriate
wristband.
OLD 320: Each listed Old 320 member and one (1) guest receive
wristbands only if they are NOT qualified to cook or show. Qualified cooks or
show team captains DO NOT receive wristbands in addition to the Old 320
wristband.
Don’t haul a motor home full of beer and wine down to Terlingua. Our
great sponsors have generously provided for the judging and we owe it to them
to buy product onsite. We will have special bulk package prices available to our
members to help accomplish this. I promise it will be totally competitive and
waiting for you when you get there. The prices in that area are lower than the
metroplex.
L & F Distributing, Woodbridge Wines, and Glazers/Permian come
out and work hard for us. They are all Gold Level Sponsors. That means they
each contribute $10,000 to CASI each year. Do your part to say thank you.
Once again we will be featuring a truck load sale of Woodbridge Wine .
Contact me for pricing and variety - Jezell8642@aol.com
If you are buying Beer for your pod events, I will have some beer to donate
if you buy some. Check with me. This will make it below retail.
Thanks for your help on this.

The Tequila Rose Party is open to all women at Rancho CASI de los
Chisos. As always, this will be held on Wednesday, October 31, at 7:00 p.m.
This is a night of camaraderie and fun. As in the past, we plan to entertain and
touch your heart. The theme this year is “Naughty or Nice” to coincide with the
newest flavor of Tequila Rose, “Hot Rose”. Dress code is anything red and
black (naughty) or pink and black (nice) and you must bring one bottle of Tequila
Rose per two ladies. As always there will be door prizes and surprises as well
as Tequila Rose gifts for the first 200 ladies. The fun begins at 7:00 p.m. in the
judging pavilion. Make plans to join us on this special night.
Tequila in Terlingua! Join us behind the TICC stage on Wednesday,
October 31, at 7:00 pm. for the Tequila in Terlingua Society Party. Join the
men of Terlingua as we celebrate life, liberty, and male bonding without the
trappings of tablecloths, roses or poems. Strictly unstructured fun for the men of
Rancho CASI de los Chisos! We have no dress code and we will not cook a
thing! We will have Tarantula Tequila margaritas, Outlaw Cigars, door
prizes, numerous shots of tequila and freedom to do anything you want. Bring a
bottle of tequila to share, a hand full of cigars, and a snack to share. Let the
Tequila flow and smoke blow!!!

ATTENTION CHILI COOKS
As always we need volunteers for the Friday Events at TICC. We will
need judges for the Salsa. Beans and Wings competitions as well as table
monitors. Please take the time to sign up as a volunteer. You can contact me on
FB, send me an email at glendavrba@gmail.com , or call me at 469-386-5600
and I’ll put you on the list.
We also need volunteers for veggie cutting Thursday afternoon at 3:00 pm in
the main pavilion. Please bring a knife, cutting board and a jug of water to wash
the veggies. Everyone knows we don’t have running water at the ranch in
Terlingua…
Also as a reminder we will be collecting Christmas toys for the school
children in Terlingua at TICC again this year. These children many times would
get nothing for Christmas if it wasn’t for the generosity of the chili cooks. And
yes we will be more than happy to take cash donations if you don’t have time to
buy a toy. All toys should be unwrapped. Let’s make every child in Terlingua
happy this year at Christmas by bringing an extra toy or two to share! The
school can also use wrapping paper so bring a couple of rolls with you they don’t
take up much room.
We are in need of someone with a truck to go to Alpine on Wednesday to
pick up the judging supplies, water and sodas. If you can make the trip please
contact me for all the details.
I’d like to just say thank you to everyone for your support of CASI and the
various charities this past year and I look forward to seeing you down the chili
trail soon.. See ya in Terlingua!

TOYS FOR TOTS
Don’t forget to bring your unwrapped toys for children - infants to 12 years old to TICC this year. If you want to include some wrapping paper with your toys, that
would be great. Toys can be dropped off at the Main Concession Stand.
NEWS FLASH:
BEER AND WINE AT TICC
WINE - We have negotiated an incredible wine price for this year’s TICC.
In spite of the grape market tightening, and we all know what fuel and freight
have done to costs, we will have the same price for wine as last year. Case lots
of 750 ml bottles will be available at 4.20 a bottle plus tax. We will have all
varieties. If it is not made in 750s, it will be available in 1.5s. I really need
everyone to jump on this, as most of you ran out before year end. You will never
buy Woodbridge this cheap again. It is 30.00 a case off list. Remember the
holidays are coming. EMAIL ME YOUR CASE ORDERS:
jezell8642@aol.com
BEER - We will also have excellent prices on 30 packs of premium beer
and 18 pks of Lone Star. Beer prices are in the process of a price increase so I
don’t have final numbers as we go to press. I will be offering some promotional
below cost deals.

WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!
WOW, what a year it’s been! I remember Jim Ezell
telling me before I went on stage that my life will not be
the same after this; I just laughed and said to myself
after a month everything will be back to normal. How
wrong was I? Jim you were right. I want to thank all
the Board members for their support because I didn’t
have a clue on what was to be expected of me after
winning. I have had the honor of meeting so many great
Chili Heads out there that made me feel so proud to be
a CASI member. This year I have had the opportunity
to cook in so many cook offs in so many new places. I
cooked in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Kansas,
Mexico, and I still have Indiana and California left to go
to. Please everyone try to go to some cook offs that you have not been to
before, you will meet new people and have a great time. The reason I am
posting this letter is to say thank you to all the sponsors and members for
supporting CASI. You have invested a lot of time and money to get qualified,
you need to make plans to go to Terlingua you just might win the whole thing; I
never thought I had a chance.
Thank you for such a great experience.

SALSA EVENT 2012
This year there will be a Traditional Salsa category and a NonTraditional Salsa category at TICC. See descriptions below.
• $15.00 per entry.
• Turn in will be at 1:00 pm for both.
• Top 5 in each category announced.
Traditional Salsa
Salsa is the Spanish word for sauce, and in Mexico it refers to sauces that
are used as an ingredient for a variety of dishes and as a condiment. It is
normally a spicy blend of tomatoes, onions, and hot peppers finely pureed or
cooked to a liquid like consistency. Secondary ingredients are traditionally garlic,
salt and optionally, cilantro.
Non-Traditional Salsa
Pico de Gallo, Verde (green), Greek, Fruit based, etc. Anything goes here,
be creative and have fun. Any fruit, vegetable, or spice is acceptable (pineapple,
ginger, bell pepper, etc). Additionally, non-traditional ingredients such as
Worcestershire sauce and tequila are perfectly acceptable as long as the endproduct tastes great.
Salsa Judging Rules and Characteristics:
• Color/appearance – is the product attractive and visually appealing?
• Smell/Aroma – the product should have a pleasant aroma, without one
ingredient overpowering the others.
• Flavor – independent of spiciness, the product should be delicious.
• Viscosity/Texture – do you like the texture in terms of smooth, crunchy,
easy to dip, etc?
• Heat/Spiciness – CASI is looking for a “classic” level of heat, not
extreme or mind-numbing heat – mild, medium or hot are all fine, but try
not to destroy the judges’ taste buds!
Prizes will also change ($1,600.00 total prize checks):
• 1st in each category: $350
• 2nd in each category: $250
• 3rd in each category: $150
• 4th in each category: $50
• 5th in each category: gift box of salsa

Highway Cleanup Day
(& Treasure Hunt)
The CASI Highway Clean Up Day will occur
on Thursday, November 1, 2012. Lee Kroencke,
Bobby Elliott, and I will be coordinating this time
honored event on behalf of CASI. We meet at the
main stage at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday morning.
Over the past few years, we’ve noted that
participation has waned some.
We do this clean-up in a “relay fashion” so no
one has to walk too far or carry too much. The
entire exercise usually takes about an hour or an
hour-and-a-half. All the walking is down hill which
makes things much easier.
We normally collect a sizable quantity of
empty, old, and sun weathered beverage containers
and plastic bags, e.g., glass and plastic bottles, cans
and plastic bags full of this junk. For those of you
who choose to join us this year, there’s a good
chance that some of you may come across some
brand new, valuables that might
include spirits, beer, and other swag
intended to enhance your disposition
and your entertainment endeavors
on Thursday evening and maybe the
entire weekend.
Lee, Bobby, and I will meet you there!!

Chili Distribution
The 3-I Pods will be accepting your chili
donations during TICC. If you have chili after the
Last Stop on the Road to Terlingua or SOTOL Pod
Cookoffs and you would like to donate, please take
it to the Pod’s set-up in front of the Ancira Pavilion
on Saturday. Additionally, any leftover chili would
be appreciated after turn-in. We have many
spectators who never get a chance to taste the
chili and want to give them this opportunity.
Ice Delivery
If you own a Kawasaki Mule, Kubota RTV,
Polaris Ranger or even a golf cart and have time to
help with the delivery of ice, please contact Roger
Foltz at 214-914-3733 or email him at
rbfoltz@aol.com to volunteer. Ice delivery is twice
a day, around 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Meet some
interesting people and help CASI at the same time.

NORWICH, KS - Ed Parks from the Sunflower Pod and the city of
Norwich hosted their first ever CASI CCO. The NORWICH CLASSIC
CHILI COOKOFF, September 15, 2012, was held in conjunction with the
Norwich Car Show and was a huge success. Over half the town showed up; the
city council and even the mayor judged chili. The winners were (back row, from
left) Tracy Donovan, Steve Stuart, Richard Hewlett, Lee Kroencke, Shelley
Kroencke, Jim Trump, and Jay McCleery. Kneeling (from left) Gail Stuart, Kim
Donovan, Cecilia Rivera, Peg Velasquez, and Larry Velasquez.
Each year CASI awards the Tex
Schofield Scholarship of 4,000.00 to
the Valedictorian who this year is
Brian Ritcheson
This year a new 4,000.00
scholarship from Ancira Motorhomes
was given to the Salutatorian, Karli
Sherman through the Friends of CASI
sponsor program.
JASPER, GA – The 8TH ANNUAL GEORGIA STATE
CHAMPIONSHIP in Jasper proved to be another success this year with some
tough competition. In fact, this was the toughest bunch of chili wranglers ever
fielded at Lee Newton Park, site of the Georgia Marble Festival in the First
Mountain City of Jasper, Georgia.
Nineteen cooks squared off amid the campers, tents and motor homes (Lee
Newton has water & electric hook-ups) in one of the prettiest little parks east of
the Mississippi River. The Knight family represented Tennessee, Jimmy Maturo
and Chuck Stock from Florida, Bill Heslop and Tom Carey from Alabama, and
all the rest were from Georgia. It was a great regional turn out and we
appreciate everyone supporting our local Habitat for Humanity organization, our
designated charity.
For the first time ever the top three winners were all from Georgia! In fact,
this is the first year a Georgia resident won first place and was named the
Georgia State Champion. Yet the scoring was close and several tie-breakers
were required to settle the slight differences. Our celebrity judges, including the
founder of Habitat Humanity - Pickens County, told me they were so impressed
they wanted to meet the winners and ask how to make their own chili taste as
good.
As I said before, these cooks as a group rivaled some of the bigger Texas
cook-offs in my memory. The fact that the attendance is growing and the chili
cooks are tough to beat is making this CCO a great regional competition worthy
of travel from afar to attend. It’s always great to get away from the city into the
mountains. Hope to see more folks join us next year as we continue the
tradition.

August 25, 2012, benefitted Operation Second Chance (OSC)
www.operationsecondchance.org. Operation Second Chance is a local charity
that supports wounded, injured, and ill service personnel and their families. We
hosted about 20 recovering soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen as well as their
families and raised over $1000 for OSC. Our guests were invited to cook, judge,
or just enjoy the chili.
Christii Watkins coached rookie cook, Chad Ohmer, (a recovering marine)
all the way to 5th place. She also coached another rookie cook Maryland
resident, Chris Thomas, a retired USN commander. He finished one position
higher than Christii knocking her out of automatic qualification for Terlingua!
Our very own CASI TallyMaster, Jenny Windsor, came in 1st Place!

ST. THOMAS, VI - The TEXAS SOCIETY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS 28TH ANNUAL CHILI COOKOFF was held August 19, 2012, at
Brewer’s Beach, University of the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas, VI. Sinking
your toes into the white sandy beach, wading into the Caribbean’s turquoise
waters, the smell of chili on the gentle trade winds ….Yee Haw, it was Chili
Day on the Island! Ralph and Dee Hay, recognized as the Virgin Pod’s Chili
Royalty at the Cooks’ Party the night before, opened the Chili Village named
this year in memory of the Pod’s long time TallyMaster, Francee Carter.
Pepper Popper Lori Abbotts and her trio, My Sisters and Me, sang the National
Anthem and the Virgin Islands March in three-part harmony to a most appreciative crowd numbering in the thousands. After purchasing this year’s CCO t-shirt
and tickets for ice-cold beer and chili tastes, the crowd made rounds to the more
than 60 chili booths, 16 competing in Showmanship. Everyone found themselves
dancing to great music by Flipswitch, Slick Fiction, and Island Locos with a
special memorial tribute to Maria Eich. Then the moment every cook was
waiting for, the announcement of the winners; first place CASI Chili was
Frances Sullivan, Euless, TX, and first place Showmanship, Betsy’s Bar OHMAYA.
Beneficiaries of this most successful event are the Queen Louise Home For
The Aged, Family Resource Center, St. Thomas Rescue, Dial-A-Ride and the
St. Thomas-St. John Power Squadron. Many thanks to sponsors Coors Light,
Capt. Morgan, Merchant’s Market, Fortress Storage, Dominos Pizza, The Island

in August and come join the fun of Chili for Charity, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands

WIFI SERVICE AT TICC
The CASI Ranch will have WiFi Service for TICC provided by Hill
Country WiFi. The service will be available from Oct 26th to Nov 4th @ 7AM.
The signal will be broadcast from the judging area, the River Runner area, and
Krazy Flats area. This should reach most of the ranch. The cost will be $5/day
or $20 for the whole event. It will be offered on first come, first served basis.
The service is limited to 100 users so sign up early.
To access the internet, select the ‘Rancho CASI’ network from your
laptop. Then, open your internet browser, select your plan (daily vs. whole
event) and enter your credit card info on the secure web page. That’s it.
Because the service uses relatively low capacity internet circuits (the fastest
available in the area), you need to be aware of some restrictions before you sign
up. These restrictions are necessary to allow more people to have access to
basic internet services. The following uses will not be allowed, except in an
emergency: Large updates from Microsoft, Adobe or Apple websites, video
streaming from web cams, or recorded TV (Hulu), audio streaming from TV or
radio stations, or video intensive gaming. There is no restriction for normal email
and web browsing activities. There will be several websites that have free
access. These include the CASI website, major sponsor websites, the Weather
Channel, and others that may be added for public safety reasons.
If you have questions about the service, please contact Bruce Pinnell at 210372-0469.
CASI VIRTUAL MUSEUM
WWW.CASICHILI.NET
At the recent Great Pepper’s Meeting, the new CASI Virtual Museum, a
project undertaken by the Apple Dumplin’ Gang (ADG) earlier this year, was
presented to the delegates and guests in attendance. Recording and organizing the
history of CASI has become an urgent matter, since more and more of those who
were around in the 1970’s, when things started to happen, are no longer with us.
Therefore, the urgency to get this project accomplished has become a priority.
Over the last few months, much time has been invested by members of the ADG
to begin the population of the museum database. At the present time, over 800 MB
of data has been archived. Many boxes of old CASI records have been gone through
and more have been located.
We are confident that we have all of the Terlingua Trails ever printed and all
of the TICC posters. We are now concentrating on locating paper items, since paper
has a way of deteriorating as it ages. After you review the contents of the Museum
at www.chili.org, see if there might be an item that you have that would be
appropriate to place on the site.
There are two sections of the Museum in which help will be needed from the
Pods and the membership:
(1)The History of CASI Pods
(2)The Who’s Who of CASI.
The second item is going to be the most interesting, as it will allow all of us
to tell the stories of people, show teams, organizations, etc. that helped make our
organization possible. Every state has its own celebrities and personalities, and
all of their stories need to be told. There currently are a few examples posted of
what is needed for the Museum. But these are only examples and need to be
expanded.
Articles need to be submitted in the form of a WordPerfect or Microsoft
Word document. We would like to receive pictures in “JPG” format. If you
scan the picture, get the highest quality image you can obtain. We can always
decrease the quality of a picture for web use, but we cannot enlarge or improve
it. A quality “PDF” format of a picture is also acceptable, because it can be
easily converted to “JPG”. Additionally, people do not have to be deceased to
be included. Also keep in mind that anything you send us will be returned after
processing.
There is much more to explain about the Museum project, but it is more than
this article will allow. If you have any questions about the project, please email
me at Jim@hillcountrysoftware.com or call my office (800-422-1982) and leave
me a message. For this project to be a success, we need the help of everyone
involved in CASI. And, I think that we should all realize that if the Museum
doesn’t get created now, it probably never will.
A new website for CASI was introduced at the Great Peppers Meeting
in Irving. www.casichili.net is the new location on the web to get the latest
information on CASI happenings and to submit cookoff and membership
information. The website is a work in progress but it is up and running and
available for your use. Even though the functionality is somewhat limited at this
time, the plan is to build on these initial capabilities and provide the CASI
community with a robust, reliable and highly functional user experience.
Casichili.net provides a new look to some of the routine things our members
do. As of right now you can go to casichili.net to do any of the following:
• Renew your membership – You have the option to renew an Individual
or Corporate membership or sign up to be a Lifetime Member. In
addition to signing up you can pay for the membership right online using a
safe and secure payment system.
• Submit a Cookoff – Fill out the online form with the information for your
cookoff and submit. Everything is then sent to the Director for
Upcomings to be logged and put in the Trails.
• Submit cookoff results – When a cookoff is complete, enter the results
and pay for the cookoff online. This will make posting the official results
faster and more accurate.
• Find a cookoff on the calendar – Use the calendar view to search for
cookoffs in your area. All of the information about the cookoff is
available to you at the click of a button.
• Smart Phone and Tablet access – Not only can you do all of this from
your computer web browser of choice; now your smart phone or tablet
browsers have all of the same functionality.
This is only the start of an effort that will take several more months. The
current capabilities certainly help with some of the front-end work to keep
everyone informed about CASI events but there is more to do. Our next major
objective will be to provide the functionality that will allow you to do things like
see your cooking point history or manage your contact information.
Our guiding principles for all of the enhancements moving forward will be:
• Ease of use - We want the user experience to be as simple and
straightforward as possible
• Increased access – Access the site from anywhere you can get access
to the web
• Secure, reliable, and available – Continue to provide the same level of
security and safekeeping of CASI information that has been the
cornerstone of CASI systems from the beginning.
We are off to a good start, however, there is a lot of work left to do and we
need your feedback to help steer us in the right direction. Please use the
“Contact Us” form on the website or send an email to rollandpate@gmail.com
with any questions or suggestions for improvement.

Cooking With CASI
Greetings!
If you have an upcoming cookoff for
December, your cookoff must be submitted no later
than October 15th.
As a reminder, please follow these simple steps
to submit your cookoff;
1. Use email as your first choice to submit a
cookoff. Send it to lee.kroencke@gmail.com
2. Use your phone a second choice. Call your
cookoff to 913-754-6074
3. Use the US Postal Service as a last resort.
Use this as a last choice, it is slow and
problematic. The address is:
CASI Upcomings
P.O. Box 15239
Lenexa, KS 66285-5239
4. Enter the cook off in the CIS system yourself.
It is an honor and privilege to serve as your Upcomings Director. Thanks for
all you do for CASI and charities in your area, and best wishes for your upcoming
cookoff.

A Guy Walks into a Bar...
A man walks into a bar with a slab of asphalt under his arm and says, "A beer
please. And one for the road."
Two antennae meet on the roof of a bar, fall in love, and get married at the bar.
The ceremony wasn't so hot, but the reception was great.
A pair of jumper cables walks into a bar. The bartender says, "Okay, I'll serve
you. But don't start anything."
I walked into a bar and ordered a double. The bartender brought out a guy who
looked just like me.
Did you hear about the bar on the moon? The drinks are terrific, but there's no
atmosphere.

Free Quarter Page Ad
to CASI Pods, State, Regional and
International Opens
As a CASI Pod you are required to put on a pod cookoff once a year. To help
you advertise your pod cookoff we allow each pod to place one quarter page ad in
the Terlingua Trails, each year, free of charge. This ad should run the month before
your cookoff occurs. Should you decide that you need an ad larger than a quarter
page we will simply bill you for the difference in price. This ad should not be
confused with the article advertising your cookoff in the "Cooking with CASI
Calendar" section in the Terlingua Trails. That article will start to run as soon as you
request your cookoff packet and will run until your cookoff occurs.
