The state of Missouri recently announced its 68 Presidential Scholar semifinalists, ten of whom are JBS
seniors. Congratulations to Josh Kazdan, Griffin Kennard, Jessie Li, Olivia Long, Helen Pan, R.B.
Smith, Lucy Summer, Shoshana Williams, Chris Wong and Kate Yee.
The Super Mileage Vehicle Club’s car was selected as one of 100 vehicles in North, Central and South
America to participate in the Shell Oil Eco-marathon Americas from April 20 to 24 in Detroit. The
Burroughs car will compete against vehicles designed and built by students at not only the high school,
but college level. Vehicles will be judged based on speed attained and fuel efficiency after running the 10K
course four times. Go Bombers!
Congratulations to senior athletes who will be playing a sport at the college level — Chris Vachow
(football at Bowdoin), Ronald Smith (football at Columbia), Maddy Smith (volleyball at Grinnell), Zale
Shah (tennis at Colby), Garrett Moore (football at Beloit), John Moley (football at Wash U), Kate Milner
(field hockey at DePauw), Shane Kreinberg (baseball at New York University), Lily Katzman (field
hockey at Northwestern), Corinne Condie (field hockey at Brown), Barrett Carlson (lacrosse at Yale)

During the Future Business Leaders of America District Leadership Conference held in Chesterfield on
Monday, February 8, the JBS team claimed its spot at state by sweeping the performance competitions
earning five first-place awards. In individual events, six students took home top awards and berths at
state, and three students earned Wild Card spots to compete in the state competition in Introduction to
Business.

An image of senior Evie Oglesby’s “Luster Teapot” was selected for the promotional materials in advance
of the annual High School Teapot Exhibition, featuring the work of students from 16 area high schools.
The exhibit runs through April 6 in the Kuehner Gallery at Burroughs. Evie’s teapot was also selected for
the 19th Annual National K12 Ceramic Exhibition, which will be held in March in Kansas City.
Philip Barnes (Classics) was the invited speaker at the January lecture of the Classical Club of St. Louis.
His topic was “Catullus’ Latvian Homecoming: A New Setting of Poem 46 by Ugis Praulins.”

Congratulations to violinists Selena Lee ’17, Adam Martin ’16, Julia Riew ’17 and Michelle Tang ’16;
cellist Dylan Lee ’16; and double bassist Abby McCay ’17 on being selected to perform in the Missouri
Music Educators Association (MMEA) All State Orchestra. Congratulations also to French horn player
Ethan Wang ’19 on being selected to play in the MMEA All State Band.
John Moley ’16 took third place in ceramics at the 2015 Young Artists and Their Teachers Exhibition at
Lindenwood University.
John Pierson (Theatre; English) is directing three short plays at the Labute New Theater Festival in
New York City. The show, which debuted in St. Louis, with Caroline Adams ’15 and Ry Gaffney ’15 in the
original productions, runs through February 7 at 59e59 theaters in midtown. To learn more about the

In its annual review of 2015 classical music performances, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch recognized the
St. Louis Chamber Chorus for the most memorable choral concert of the year and the best venue of the
year. Philip Barnes (Classics) is artistic director of the chorus. He will direct the chorus in a Valentine’s
Day concert that includes a rarely heard arrangement of a Roman wedding hymn by Lassus, and a
modern masterpiece, “Amore Langueo” by Francis Pott. The concert will be at 3 pm, Sunday, February

One of Andrew Denney’s (Fine Arts) ceramic sculptures will be included in the 5th Central Time
Ceramics Exhibition at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. The exhibit runs from February 24 through
March 25.
Classics teachers Philip Barnes. Jim Lowe, Avery Springer and Annie Truetzel participated in the
national conference of the Society for Classical Studies in San Francisco. Ms. Truetzel presented a paper
in a session on the Roman historian Livy, and Dr. Lowe participated in the annual board meeting of the
Vergilian Society, of which he is now 2nd vice president.
