Physics 213: Physics for Scientist and Engineers-III: Given a continuous distribution of charges, students will calculate the electric field at an arbitrary point in space. Students will be able to derive an expression for the motion of a charged particle in magnetic field. Students can explain from a microscopic point of view the nature of electrical current and electrical resistance. Given a vector field, electric or magnetic, students will explain the presence or lack of sources by applying the vector operations curl and divergence. Students will design an experiment that measures the magnetic field produced by Helmholtz coils. The first part is a 3-day lab on the Motion of a Charged Particle in a Magnetic Field. The second part of the report, on the Magnetic Field of the Helmholtz Coils, is an opportunity for you to design your own experimental set-up. You may use anything in the lab, as long as it gets returned to its proper place. You have one day to design, and one day to take data and analyze. Often Rio Hondo 213 students gets 6 different approaches to the Magnetic Field of the Helmholtz Coil problem. !
