The house on SW 13 th Street was Delta Delta’s home for almost 78 years, and was a rallying point for many decades of Brothers. However, eventually the house became so deteriorated that living in it became untenable, so the
Chapter moved.
During the last two years, the Chapter has been renting the undersized Sigma Nu house located on Fraternity Row. (The Chapter’s lease lasts through mid-2006, and cannot be renewed.)
Undersized for the Chapter’s needs, the small house has proven a deterrent in the recruitment of new members. Despite that challenge, the aggressive young Delta Delta men have doubled their membership in the last two years to over 100!
The Chapter’s housing corporation has diligently examined a number of alternatives, including renovating the old House. Unfortunately, the
House was deemed unsalvageable, and was sold to UF in 2002 for a fair price.
Subsequently, The Delta Rho Chapter House
Association purchased two adjoining properties abutting Sorority Row. With alumni help, construction on the new House of approximately
20,000 square feet will begin in winter 2005.
The Delta Rho Educational Foundation of Florida was established to receive tax deductible gifts. The
Foundation is based on a successful model utilized by Kappa Sigma at the University of Arkansas.
The Foundation has received 501(c)(3) taxexempt status. It will make grants to support the educational areas in the new building. (It is also chartered to seed campus service activities and provide endowment for scholarships.)
The campaign budget was established based on the following:
• Cost of land: $0 (purchased by sale of
other House; $140K in reserves remain)
• Cost of building: $2,000,000 (estimated)
• Cost of additional reserves: $250,000
(covers cost overruns, unexpected
expenses associated with the House)
• Cost of bridge financing /fundraising:
$250,000 (for interest/other related expenses while pledges are paid)
• Less annual rents and parlor fees,
estimated to be $1,000,000.
RESULTING CAMPAIGN BUDGET:
$1,500,000
In summary, student rents will pay for the
“non-charitable” uses of the House. The
Educational Foundation will support the building of the rooms and infrastructure committed to Leadership, Scholarship and Service. Any remaining funds to the
Campaign would be restricted to capital expenditures, maintenance, and upkeep.

Forty-eight Men of Honor are needed to make pledges between $250,000 and
$10,000 over five years.
Gifts of cash, appreciated stocks, paid up life insurance, bonds and other property can be used to support this very worthwhile project. Once the leadership gifts for the naming opportunities are secured, pledge classes will be asked to add their support to the effort.
For more information contact the Campaign Committee
Chairman, Marshall Stevens, at 727-573-3900 x18.
The Foundation will also accept gifts through bequest or trust.
Such gifts may be named in memory or honor of others.
Gifts may be restricted to uses such as capital
(including maintenance and furnishings), endowment, regranting for service activities or scholarships. For example, the endowed Edwin Miller Memorial Scholarship Fund generated interest to fund 18 scholarships in 2004.
“Redefining the Standard” is the theme selected by today’s Delta Delta Chapter of
Kappa Sigma. Our Brothers have truly “Redefined the Standard” for fraternities at the University of Florida! In 2003, the Chapter won the Buddy McKay Award for
Fraternal Excellence, making the Delta Delta Chapter UF’s best fraternity on campus!
The McKay Award recognizes excellence in membership, community service, academics, pledge education, alumni relations, athletics, extra-curricular involvement, and overall relations between the Greek and University communities.
The recognition continues today. Membership has doubled in two years to over 100 men. Yet, all this has been accomplished without a permanent place to call “home.”
As Men of Honor, we are calling on you today to support the building of a new
House for our fine Brothers at the University of Florida!

The design of Delta Delta Chapter’s new three-story brick House will redefine the standard for University residences. It will stand out as a symbol of excellence, helping convey the four cornerstones of Kappa Sigma:

The exterior of the House will convey the values of the Chapter, become a Gainesville landmark, and remain a striking showplace for the University of Florida for years to come. The entry will open wide between grand columns, surrounded by a covered porch. Natural light will flow through large windows on all sides into three stories, including all common areas and private rooms.
Any aspiring community leader will want to live in this House.
Moving through the entry, a visitor will first see a large, comfortable, dignified open living area, with a beautiful glass showcase for the
Chapter’s many awards. Walls will be filled with framed photos of
Chapter activities, history and honors.
“The Kappa Sigma Fraternity experience shaped my husband’s life. The best thing I can do to honor his memory is to support this project.”

Across the great room, large sliding doors will invite Brothers and guests alike to step out onto a large back deck featuring a built-in barbecue pit. The deck will be surrounded by shrubbery, grass and trees, and the site of many fellowship activities, whether in the
Florida sunshine or on balmy nights.
Suites and single rooms are planned to house approximately 50
Brothers, as research has shown that about 40% of a fraternity’s membership wants to live in the House. House plans include:
• a grand, inviting and engaging great room
• single and double rooms with private baths
• heating/AC controls and wiring
for cable, phone, and Internet
• study halls on two floors
• housemother’s apartment
• mail room, staircase, elevator
• women’s “powder room”
• full kitchen and buffet dining
• common areas on each floor
• laundry facilities and storage
• vending machines on each floor

Universally, fraternities are competitive.
Although Greek life at the University of Florida offers many things to many people, chapters vigorously vie with one another for quality men, and compete during the academic year for campus honors and recognition. Students also have higher expectations and expect modern amenities in their fraternity housing.
Unfortunately, the Chapter’s facilities have not been competitive for decades. Despite a number of renovations over 78 years, the old Kappa Sigma House was worn out. The old
House put the Chapter at a recruitment disadvantage, and temporary housing was obtained.
A new House is needed to provide the finest living facility on campus! The most visible symbol of a fraternity is the chapter house itself. When recruiting quality members, the chapter’s house projects the quality of its Brothers.
Plans for this House stem from many years of hard work by the now deceased Ralph Stevens, Jr. (1950).
He received the prestigious John G. Tower Distinguished
Alumni award in 2001 (as well as others). The Housing
Committee of the campus Delta Delta Chapter, chaired by Ryan Merkel (2004), working with
Marshall Stevens (1982) actively researched the space and buildings of other fraternities on campus.
The Crescent House Campaign Committee, along with the boards of the Delta Rho Chapter
House Association of Florida and the Delta Rho Educational Foundation, have determined that building a House of 20,000 square feet, at an estimated cost of over $2,000,000, is essential. It is clearly time that Kappa Sigma, with its alumni taking the lead, address both the housing needs of the Chapter and the impact the House has on the success of recruiting quality members. The design of the new House will reflect the Delta Delta Chapter’s role as the finest fraternity on campus. It will become a sought-after privilege to live in the new House.
Take the next step alongside the exceptional men of Kappa Sigma. For details about naming opportunities, please request additional information, or call Marshall
Stevens at 727-573-3900, or any campaign committee member.
Commit today to make a tax-deductible donation toward this project! All pledges may be completed over 5 years, and naming opportunities begin at $10,000. Campaign support may be received through gifts of cash or assets, appreciated stock, paid-up whole life insurance, or bonds. Deferred gifts may be made through bequests, trusts, or IRA designations.
