“DAY BY DAY ITINERARY”
Friday May 15 – Depart
Depart Chicago this afternoon on a Virgin Atlantic non-stop flight to London.
Saturday May 16 – London
Welcome to London. You will be greeted by your tour director who will escort you to your motor coach.
Start your day heading west with a visit to Stonehenge. Marvel at this great and ancient stone circle, one
of the wonders of the world. What visitors see at Stonehenge today are the substantial remnants of the
last in a sequence of such monuments erected between circa 3000BC and 1600BC. Each monument was
a circular structure, aligned with the rising of the sun at the midsummer solstice. Check in at your hotel
in the Salisbury area. Welcome dinner is included this evening. (D)
Sunday May 17 – Barnstaple
We head west today with a stop in Glastonbury to explore this historic town which dates back to
Neolithic times. Glastonbury is steeped in legend. Pilgrims flock from the world over to Glastonbury Tor
and Chalice Well in search of the legends of the Holy Grail and King Arthur. Admission is included to
Glastonbury Abbey where we can learn about the area and the belief that it is a possible site of Camelot.
Glastonbury is traditionally the first Christian Sanctuary in Great Britain visited, so legend has it, by
Joseph of Arimathea and Saints David and Patrick. Many believe that the Holy Thorn tree that can be
seen in the grounds originated from Joseph of Arimathea's staff and it has also long been believed that
King Arthur was buried in the Abbey beside his lovely wife Queen Guinevere. Continue on to Barnstaple,
your home for the next 3 nights. Tonight’s dinner is included at the hotel. (B&D)
Monday May 18 – Barnstaple (Port Isaac)
We’ll take the Cornish coastal route via Bideford and Bude on our way to our ultimate destination, Port
Isaac – better known to viewers of WTVP’s Doc Martin series as Port Wenn. The exteriors of the hit
series are filmed in this picturesque village, and you will have much of the day to explore and search out
your favorite views. You might even run into one of the stars of the series or some of the extras, or find
yourself lunching at a familiar café. Whether you are a fan of the series or not, you will find Port Isaac
the perfect setting for memorable photos and videos. Return to Barnstaple for overnight. (B)
Tuesday May 19 – Barnstaple
We head south today to famous Dartmoor, so much associated with Sherlock Holmes and more
specifically, The Hound of The Baskervilles. We continue on to Plymouth to explore and see the
Mayflower Steps from where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail. As the regional capital of Devon and Cornwall,
Plymouth is an extra-ordinary blend of vibrant modern city and historic seafaring port. Our visit includes
a naval and harbor cruise on the beautiful Plymouth Sound flanked by the Devon and Cornish coasts.
We’ll pass Plymouth Hoe, the famous Drake’s Island, and head for the River Tamar where mighty
warships and nuclear submarines await. We then return to Barnstaple for an included dinner and
overnight. (B&D)
Wednesday May 20 -Barnstaple – (St. Ives & Land’s End)
Today we head south to St. Ives, one of the most famous holiday towns in Cornwall – a jewel situated at
the south-western tip of this island kingdom. Today, as for centuries before, life centers around the
harbor where fishing boats still moor alongside granite piers, their catch being sent around the world
and earning an enviable reputation for its quality and variety in some of the finest restaurants. Lunch is
included.
We continue along the coast to Land’s End, the most westerly tip of the English mainland, where it is
easy to imagine stepping off the end of the earth and into the mists of Arthurian legend. The phrase,
"Land's End to John O'Groats" is frequently heard as both a literal journey (it is 874 miles from Land's
End to the Scottish village of John O'Groats) and as a metaphor for great distances in cultures around
the world. Return to Barnstaple for dinner and overnight. (B, L &D)
Thursday May 21 – Barnstaple – Cotswolds – Windsor
We depart Barnstaple and travel toward London, pausing en route for free time in Castle Coombe in the
Cotswolds – some people say is the most attractive village in Britain. The Cotswolds is a typically English
part of the country and the area is well known for its rolling hills, honey colored stone and delightful
villages and towns. The limestone hills of the Cotswolds are unbelievably photogenic and strewn with
countless picture book towns and villages built by wealthy cloth (especially wool) merchants. Many of
the Cotswolds' fine manors and churches were built between the 14th and 16th centuries, when the
greatest fortunes were made from the wool industry. Numerous churches are decorated with beautiful
Norman carving and the local limestone was ideal as it is soft and easy to carve when first quarried, but
hardening after long exposure to sunlight. Dinner and overnight is in Windsor. (B&D)
Friday May 22 – Windsor – Chelsea Flower Show – London
The morning begins with admission to Windsor Castle, the largest inhabited castle in the world. It is one
of the official residences of Her Majesty the Queen and remains very much a working royal palace. The
magnificent State Rooms are furnished with some of the finest works of art from the Royal Collection.
Queen Mary's Dolls' House is a masterpiece in miniature, and St George's Chapel in the castle precincts,
is one of the most beautiful ecclesiastical buildings in England.
Friday May 22 – Windsor – Chelsea Flower Show – London (continued)
We then continue on to London for afternoon admission to the world famous RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
Formally known as the Great Spring Show, the “Chelsea Flower Show” is held for five days in May by the
Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) on the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea in Chelsea, London. This is
the ultimate event in the gardening calendar, one which will give you bragging rights as the show is open
to the public only briefly, and tickets are hard to get. It's truly the place to see and to be seen! Highlights
to the Chelsea Flower Show include the avant-garde show gardens designed by leading names with
Floral Marquee at the centerpiece. The Show also features smaller gardens such as the Artisan and
Urban Gardens. (B)
Saturday May 23 – London
This morning we will experience a fully-guided sightseeing tour of central London. We’ll visit the Shard,
the 1000’ skyscraper in the London borough of Southwark, close to London Bridge station and Tower
Bridge. Not only has it become the tallest building in the UK (and EU), but it is also the first 'truly' mixed
use scheme being comprised of offices, retail, a 5 star hotel, bars/cafés and luxury apartments. It has
been described as a 'vertical city' and according to its architect, Renzo Piano, it will be 'living 24 hours a
day and intensify the city life'. Enjoy a trip up to the Observation Deck on Floors 68-72, and be amazed
by the sights of London beneath you!
Next we visit the Tower of London and the White, Bloody and Martin Towers, where prisoners were
held and often tortured. Look for the Crown Jewels, displayed in a specially built jewel house, and don’t
forget the Ravens, without whom the White Tower would supposedly fall – and a great disaster befall
the monarchy! Enjoy your farewell dinner this evening in a local restaurant. (B&D)
Sunday May 24 – London – Chicago
We bid farewell to Britain as we board our non-stop flight from London to Chicago arriving the same
afternoon. (B)
