Power Magnetics Component Update
This article reports on 20+ power magnetic components introduced over the past six months. Among the parts
profiled here are numerous power inductors targeting dc-dc converters, including several AEC-Q200-compliant
inductors for automotive applications. Among the power inductors, low-profile components are also prominent.
Two of the high-current inductors featured here employ flat windings for improved performance. In addition,
there are planar transformers offering high power, gate-drive transformers with special certifications and
chokes for high-temperature applications. This article represents a follow-up to the Power Magnetics Component
Update published in the December 2014 issue and other magnetics articles published in How2Power Today.

Power Inductors
Flat-Wire High-Current Inductors Offer Many Mounting Configurations
MPS Industries has added two new series to its line of flat-wire high
current inductors. The H2103 and H2104 series range from 5 µH to
91 µH and are rated for currents up to 51 A. These inductors provide
high current handling capacity in a compact package with superior
thermal management and heat dissipation. Both series offer a variety
of mounting configurations including vertical, horizontal, thru-hole,
surface mount, and more. A full range of custom designs is also

AEC-Q200-tested Inductors Enhance Reliability Of Automotive Systems
Eaton’s new automotive grade Coiltronics HCMA series of high-current power inductors meet and exceed the
Automotive Electronics Council’s (AEC) Q200 Grade 3 standard with a maximum total temperature operating
range from -55°C to 125°C. The inductors are designed to withstand temperature and shock stresses found in
automotive applications to support greater reliability in electronics for Advanced Drive Assistance Systems
(ADAS), vehicle control, body control, lighting, infotainment, cluster controls, heating and air conditioning,
chassis and safety systems.
“Due to the complexity and networking capabilities of
today's control devices, vehicles require the utmost
reliability from individual electronic components,” said Paul
Wiener, magnetics global product manager, Eaton’s
Electronics Division. “Components in automotive
electronics are subject to environmental and mechanical
stresses. Eaton engineered and manufactured each
inductor in the HCMA series to endure these conditions and
continue to operate with efficiency.”

Eaton designed, manufactured and tested the entire
inductor series that includes HCMA0503, HCMA0703,
HCMA1104, HCMA1305, and HCMA1707 to ensure
compliance with the AEC-Q200 Grade 3 standard. The AEC
Component Technical Committee’s definition of common
electrical qualifications in automotive environments
requires inductors to operate reliably in temperatures
ranging from -40°C to 85°C. AEC-Q200 testing stresses
devices beyond typical commercial reliability tests for
temperature cycling duration and thermal shock. This
reliability is required for dc-dc converters, voltage
regulation modules, battery powered systems, multiphase regulators and point-of-load modules used in
vehicle electronic systems.
Each inductor in the series is made of powder iron core material, and is magnetically shielded for low EMI. The
HCMA0503 has a frequency range up to 1 MHz and the HCMA0703, HCMA1104, HCMA1305 and HCMA1707
operate up to 5 MHz. Each component also features high current-carrying capacity and low core losses.

The HCMA Series is provided in surface-mount packaging with a range of compact heights beginning at 3 mm
and extending up to 7 mm. The series also covers a wide range of inductance values, starting from 0.10 μH all
the way up to 68.0 μH. Current ranges for the series start at 1.8 A and extend up to 118 A. The HCMA series is
part of Eaton’s Automotive Electronics Solutions, a web-based portal that includes an inductor selection tool.
Additionally, the Coiltronics Automotive Products design kit offers samples of all Eaton’s AEC-Q200-tested
inductors including those in the HCMA series. Designers can order the kit free-of-charge by going to

Automotive-Grade Inductors Offer Wide Range Of Values
Bourns’ SMD power inductor series includes nine new devices
designed for automotive applications. Designated SDE0403A,
SDE0604A, SDE0805A, SRF0703A, SRF0905A, SRF1280A, SRR0745A,
SRR1210A and SRR6040A, the new series consists of both nonshielded and shielded construction devices that are AEC-Q200
qualified. The series features inductance values from 0.47 to 6500 μH,
has a heating current range up to 17.9 A and offers profiles as low as
3.2 mm. With these advanced features, this series of inductors is well
suited for a broad array of automotive applications that include driver
assistant devices, information/entertainment systems and lighting.
This inductor series is available now. As a pricing reference, the
Bourns Model SDE0604A is priced at $ 0.20 each in 50,000 piece
quantities. The new power inductor series offers electrical
characteristics and dimensions that are either functionally identical
or comparable to Bourns' existing standard series. For more

Inductor Offers Low-Profile, Semi-Shielded Benefits
Bourns has expanded its line of semi-shielded power inductors with the addition of model SRN4012T, a 1.2-mm
low-profile, 3.2-A rated inductor offered in a 0.47-μH to 22-μH inductance range. This device is deemed wellsuited for dc-dc converters in mobile electronic devices, computers, data storage and consumer electronics. It is
also optimized to meet the requirements of a wide variety of industrial applications including LED lighting,
control circuits and GPS.
"Bourns' semi-magnetic shielding technology provides a higher
level of magnetic shielding and lower radiation emissions
compared to non-shielded inductors," said Guido Zehnder,
product manager at Bourns. "Offering a cost-effective solution
compared to competitively-sized conventional ferrite shield
inductors, this new model also delivers the lower profile and
inductance range required for today's smaller mobile electronic
devices as well as next-generation industrial applications."
With the introduction of the SRN4012T, Bourns now has a total
of 15 SRN models giving designers a breadth of options with
selections of 2 x 1.6 mm to 8 x 8 mm footprints and low profile
1-mm to 4.5-mm heights while delivering a broad 0.47- to 470µH inductance range.

Low-Profile Inductors Feature High Saturation Currents
Vishay Intertechnology’s Vishay Dale IHHP series of low-profile, high-current power inductors feature powdered
iron cores for high saturation current up to 5.8 A. Lowering costs and saving board space in computer,
consumer, and telecom applications, these inductors are offered in the
miniature 2.0-mm by 1.6-mm 0806 and 2.5-mm by 2.0-mm 1008
case sizes, each available with low profiles of 1.0 mm and 1.2 mm.
With their high-current performance and small size, these devices are
optimized for dc-dc converters and power supply modules in notebook
PCs, mobile phones, hard disk drives, SSDs, DVCs, and DSCs. The
magnetic-alloy power inductors offer low acoustic noise and provide
magnetic shielding to prevent interference with nearby components.
The IHHP-0806AZ-01, IHHP-0806AB-01, IHHP-1008AZ-01, and IHHP1008AB-01 feature maximum DCR down to 15 mΩ and a wide range
of inductance values from 0.22 µH to 10 µH. The devices provide a
heat rating current up to 5.3 A and operate over a temperature range

Inductors in 2020 Case Operate To 155°C
Vishay Intertechnology is offering two new IHLP low-profile, high-current inductors in the 2020 case size with
high operating temperatures to +155°C. Featuring low
profiles of 3 mm, the Vishay Dale IHLP-2020CZ-51 and
automotive-grade IHLP-2020CZ-5A provide a wide range of
inductance values from 0.22 µH to 15 µH.
With a frequency range up to 1 MHz, these devices serve as
high-performing, space- and power-saving solutions for
voltage regulator modules (VRMs) and dc-dc converters in
high-temperature commercial and automotive applications.
End products for the IHLP-2020CZ-51 include servers;
notebooks; low-profile, high-current power supplies and
point of load (POL) converters; and distributed power
systems.

Shielded Inductors Provide High Current Handling and Low DCR
Coilcraft's MLC75xx series of shielded, high-current power inductors
offer ISAT ratings up to 59.2 A and dc resistance down to 1.2 mΩ for
greater efficiency. Their soft-saturation characteristics make them ideal
for VRM/VRD designs and other applications with occasional overcurrent
requirements.
These compact inductors measure just 7.0 mm X 7.5 mm with a
maximum height of 4.2 mm. Coilcraft offers the series in seven
inductance values ranging from 0.10 to 2.17 µH. They feature RoHS
compliant tin-silver (96.5/3.5) over copper terminations and offer a
maximum reflow temperature of 260°C. They are also constructed of
proprietary materials that are not subject to thermal aging issues
associated with other iron-powder-core inductors.

High-Inductance Power Inductors Target Electric Vehicles
Coilcraft's AGP4233 series shielded power inductors offer a unique combination of high current handling and
high inductance, making them ideal for high-current power supply and filtering applications such as those used
in electric vehicle start-stop systems. They are offered in twelve standard inductance values from 6.8 µH to 470
µH, with current ratings as high as 101.8 A. Custom values are also available.
The AGP4233 series inductors feature flat-wire windings,

Automotive Grade Inductors Feature High Heat Resistance, Mechanical Strength
TDK has expanded its CLF-NI-D series of rugged power inductors for use in automotive electronics. The new
CLF7045NI-D wirewound SMD power inductors feature high efficiency and reliability over a wide temperature
range extending from -55°C to +150°C and offer rated inductance values from 1.0 µH to 470 µH (E6 series).
Measuring 7.4 mm x 7.0 mm x 4.5 mm, the CLF7045NI-D types are available for rated currents of 0.41 A to 8.5
A and offer DCR values ranging from 9 mΩ to 1.20 Ω. Mass
production will be launched in August 2015.
The new products are qualified to AEC-Q200. Thanks to TDK's
advanced materials technology the new components feature
outstanding heat resistance. A new bonding process for the
terminals enables a solderless structural design that features
improved mechanical strength. The fully automated
manufacturing process ensures the high reliability and quality
of these components. As a result, the new inductors are very
well suited for applications in demanding automotive
environments such as the power supply circuits of engine
control modules (ECM) and ECUs for airbags, ABS, and
headlights.
These new CLF7045NI-D types with a 7-mm form factor
complement the recently introduced 6-mm square
CLF6045NI-D types. In the future, TDK will further expand
the CLF-NI-D series with 5-mm, 10-mm and 12.5-mm
square types in order to offer a broad lineup of power
inductors that are suitable for a wide range of applications.

Multilayer Chip Inductors Stand Less Than 1-mm Tall
Murata has begun mass production of multilayer-type power inductors with a maximum height of 0.8 mm in
1008 (2.5 mm x 2.0 mm) (LQM2HP_EH series) and 0806 (2.0 mm x 1.6 mm) case sizes (LQM2MP_EH series).
Targeting mobile devices such as smartphones and cell phones, these new components
have an even lower profile than conventional products (maximum height 1.0 mm), while
maintaining superior dc superimposing characteristics and low dc resistance.
Using our unique multilayer technology for manufacturing high-performance inductors,
we achieved products with a maximum height of 0.8 mm that boast an even lower profile
than conventional products. Murata offers a lineup of inductance ranges from 0.24 to 22
µH that are ideal as inductors for power supply stepdown circuits such as those in small

Through-Hole Inductors Offer Low-Cost Options
Coilcraft’s RFC family of leaded power inductors offer a low-cost, high-efficiency option for power supply
applications. They are offered in three performance levels: the RFC0807 series, the RFC0810 series and the
RFC1010 series.
The RFC0807 series is available with 39 inductance values ranging
from 12 µH to 18 mH, with saturation current (ISAT) ratings up to 6.65
A and DCR as low as 0.035 Ω. They have a maximum diameter of 8.8
mm and height of 7.5 mm. The RFC0810 series is offered in 34
inductance values between 33 µH and 18 mH, with ISAT ratings as high
as 4.25 A and DCR down to 0.065 Ω. They have a maximum diameter
of 9.5 mm and height of 11.5 mm.
For even greater efficiency, Coilcraft also offers the RFC1010 series. It
is offered in 30 inductance values from 68 µH to 18 mH, with ISAT
ratings up to 3.94 A and DCR as low as 0.100 Ω. They have a
maximum diameter of 11.0 mm and height of 11.5 mm.
All RFC family power inductors are halogen free and feature RoHScompliant terminations. The RFC0810 and RFC1010 also feature a
flame-retardant polyolefin wrap to protect the winding.

Inductors Fill Gap Between 1812 And 3013 Case Sizes
Gowanda Electronics’ SMP2512 series of surface-mount, wirewound, ferrite core, molded power inductors
addresses a market need for a specific combination of size and performance in the power electronics industry.
This series is designed for use in power applications for specific surface mount size—nominally 0.25 in. L x 0.10
in. W—and current ratings of 0.26 A to 1.64 A dc for an inductance range of 1 µH to 100 µH with 5%, 10% or
20% tolerance. These power inductors are epoxy-encapsulated for environmental protection and superior
strength to withstand all types of reflow soldering.
The SMP2512 series is specifically targeted for use in dc-dc converters and switching regulated power
supplies. The rugged construction enables these inductors to be used in these applications as well as in many
other power supply applications where current handling capability and durability are important. Specific
applications include microprocessor and distributed power applications, especially in automotive electronics,

industrial process control equipment, medical diagnostic equipment and
test & measurement equipment. Other applications include use in bar

SMD Power Inductor Targets Portable Devices
Sumida’s CD30D22 SMD power inductor is designed for dc-dc converters used in
portable devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, MP3s, DSCs/DVCs, and portable
DVDs. Featuring ferrite drum core construction, these magnetically unshielded
devices offer inductance values from 1 µH to 220 µH with DCR ranging from 28.7
mΩ to 4.95 mΩ typ. Units measure 3.8 × 3.3 × 2.5 mm max. and weigh 0.07g.

Gate-Drive Transformers Feature Reinforced Isolation Per IEC61558 And IEC60601
Pulse Electronics has expanded its line of P0584/85NL high-isolation gate-drive transformers with a new series
that uses insulation wire on all windings, making them compliant to safety standards such as IEC61558 and
IEC60601 for reinforced isolation. The P0584/85NL series provides isolation in MOSFET and IGBT drivers in
industrial applications such as motor drive circuits and solar inverters and for power supplies for a range of
medical devices. The P0584/85ANL versions extend these to applications that require higher levels of safety and
isolation with 30% increased isolation capability (to 4250 V rms) and 20% greater volt-second capability.
"Existing toroidal gate-drive transformers with triple insulated
Teflon wire on just one winding are not compliant to certain
safety standards which require mechanical support between
windings, even when triple insulated wire is used on one
winding," explained Gerard Healy, product manager, Pulse
Electronics Power Business Unit. "Pulse's new P0584/85ANL
series uses insulated wires on all windings, making them fully
compliant. In addition, by using smaller wire diameters, Pulse
can increase the number of turns to increase volt-second
capability within the same platform size."
Pulse's P0584/85ANL high-isolation gate-drive transformers
expand Pulse's P0584/85NL transformer series to offer higher
isolation capabilities. They come in a robust package with 8mm creepage distance. The transformers are RoHS compliant
and meet standard EIA481 requirements. The P0584/85NL are
UL recognized/TUV certified to IEC 60950 while the ANL
versions are compliant with the requirements of IEC 61558 and
IEC 60601 for reinforced insulation.

Gate-Drive Transformers Receive VDE Certification
VACUUMSCHMELZE (VAC) has announced that three of its gate-drive transformers have received certification
according to the IEC 61558 standard. The transformers, which are documented in detail in the product
information “Gate Drive Transformers for IGBT (PI-IA 1),” are the first VAC transformers to receive VDE
certification. For VAC’s customers, obtaining certification for their devices incorporating these transformers will
now be easier. VAC has also added the 5032-X112 SMD transformer to its portfolio, also VDE-certified. The VDE
certification reports can be supplied to customers on request.
The IEC 61558 standard applied in this certification is a general standard governing the “safety of power
transformers, power supplies, reactors and similar products.” As the standard does not specify particular
applications, VAC's customers can use the certified transformers with flexibility. In addition, all transformers
manufactured by the Hanau-based company comply with its in-house UL1446 insulation system, VAC-ISO-F1.
This makes it easier for customers to obtain UL approval, which is typically a precondition of launching products
into the U.S. market.
All three transformers feature low leakage inductance and extremely high test voltages and comply with the
requirements for reinforced insulation. In addition, they offer an extremely large voltage-time integral and are
optimized for a range of operating frequencies.

Transformers Deliver 5000-V Isolation In SMT Package
Pulse Electronics’ PH9185 series high-isolation switch-mode transformers come in a standard SMT package. The
PH9185 series provides a reinforced insulation power supply that’s compatible with Maxim’s MAX253 to power
RS-485/RS-232 transceivers. The transformers operate in a fixed duty-cycle push-pull topology that delivers
lower power (up to 3 W) from a low voltage source and a working voltage up to 4000 V, with 5000-V isolation

High-isolation transformers tend to be through-hole, with an offset pin,
and oversized to meet isolation requirements, so they are relatively large
for the low powers they are delivering. Pulse’s design provides a large
safety separation (8-mm creepage distance) between pins without
oversizing the device itself, so it is high isolation and safety agencycompliant in a compact surface-mount package.”

Isolation Transformers Meet An Array Of Safety Standards
From Signal Transformer, a division of Bel Fuse, the M4L series of International Power Isolation Transformers
has expanded its certification to numerous UL safety standards, including UL 60601-1 (medical electrical
equipment). The 12-part series offers OEMs the ability to streamline access to global markets while cutting the
cost and shortening the process of obtaining new product safety agency approvals. Additionally, M4L
transformers can be customized within a variety of configurations while maintaining all their UL safety agency
approvals, usually at no additional cost.
Incorporating double reinforced insulation, the M4L series is ideally suited for a diversity of safety-critical
applications such as fire alarms and security systems, emergency lighting, deep mining exploration, hot tubs,
spas and patient-connected medical devices. The series’ construction utilizes low-loss silicon steel for higher
efficiency and UL 94V0 flame-rated polymers.
In addition, their UL Class F-rated insulation system permits operation in high ambient temperatures up to
80°C. Moreover, their non-concentric construction provides superior isolation, <30 µA leakage current, and
more than 12 mm of creepage distance between the primary and secondary windings. All M4L transformers are
rated to 4-kV hipot, however they were successfully tested to 12 kV without breakdown.
The UL certification of the M4L series includes safety standards UL 60601-1, UL 60950-1, UL 1097 and UL
2097. Certification to these standards assures the parts can be used in products and appliances covered by a
variety of UL standards including 864, 913, 916, 924, 1012, and 1238.
Engineered to facilitate secure and rapid connectivity as well as to prevent accidental shock, the M4Ls
incorporate Touch-Safe terminals (IP20) that provide a screw/binding clamp for hard wiring, together with 3/16

2020-size CM Chokes Guarantee Operation To 150°C
Murata Manufacturing has released the PLT5BPH series of 2020-size (5.0 × 5.0mm) wirewound-type power
supply common-mode choke coils for automotive applications. The AEC-Q200-compliant members of this series
specify a maximum guaranteed operating temperature of 150°C and a maximum current rating of 5.6 A. The
usable temperature range is -55°C to +150°C. However, derating of the rated current may be necessary for use
at temperatures exceeding +125°C.
These devices generate a maximum 500-Ω common-mode impedance (at 10 MHz), so
substantial noise suppression can be expected. in addition, differential-mode impedance is
high, enabling substantial suppression of normal mode noise (see the graph below).
In recent years, the automobile market has placed a great deal of importance on improving
efficiency and the ability to withstand severe environments. To achieve more precise control,
many manufacturers are placing electronic components closer to the engine or transmission.
