Figuring out which classes you need for your major
Option 1: Search for the information yourself
Go to www.catalog.umaine.edu
From here, make sure you are looking at the correct year. If
you’re not, select the correct year and hit GO.
Click on Majors and Minors. Select your major/minor. From
here, you can view all requirements for your major/minor. Many
programs even have a suggested curriculum, which can tell you
what classes you should take to stay on track.
Option 2: Come to the FYC!
If you’re still having trouble, come into our office (016 Andro)
for help. We have printouts of every major and minor UMaine
offers. Plus, we have snacks and helpful staff members that can
help you sort through all this information.
Sample Curriculum- Biology First Semester
Bio or Chem major? Chances are this is what your first semester looked like.
You can find this information for most majors using this website.
Meet with your Advisor!
Remember all those emails from some strange person you
never opened...? Yeah... That was your advisor.
Figure out who your advisor is:
Use your MaineStreet Student Center to figure
out who your advisor is.
If you are in the Honors College or are in
multiple majors, you probably have more than one
advisor. It’s a good idea to keep all advisors in the
loop.
Things to discuss with your advisor:
Classes you want to take.
Any academic questions or concerns you may have.
Your registration PIN (you NEED this to enroll in classes. Do
not leave this meeting without your PIN!).
Contact your advisor in late October or early November:
1- Try email.
2- If that doesn’t work, try calling the department phone number.
3- If that doesn’t work, go to your department’s office.
4- If that doesn’t work, repeat steps 1-3.
Do not give up until you have an appointment.
Once you have your PIN:
Write it down somewhere. Save it in an email. Add it as a
contact in your phone.
You will NEED this to be able to enroll in classes.
Searching for Classes
Where the “Back” button on your browser is your mortal enemy
Getting to the Class Search page:
From your MaineStreet Student Center, click
“Search for Classes” in the top right corner.
Getting Started:
1- Select Institution and click University of Maine
2- Make sure the correct semester pops up next to Term. If not, fix it.
Note: Class search for a given term will not be available until a few
weeks before the registration period begins.
Course Subject
• If you know the 3 letter code for the course, type that into the box here.
• If you do not know this information, click the green “select subject”
button and browse by the first letter.
• We’ll stick with BIO as our example here.
• Once you have that typed in, click “Search”.
Another tip:
The “Show Open Classes Only” button will be automatically
selected. If you would like to see all classes regardless, deselect that
button. This will show classes that are full and wait listed or closed.
Search too broad?
Try one of these to narrow your search:
• If you know a course number, enter that in the box next to
“course number-contains”.
• If you don’t know the course number, but you know it is a
100 or 200 level course, try changing the “contains” to “is
less than or equal to” and type in the appropriate range.
Advanced Searches
Looking for something very specific?
Select two criteria:
• Some popular searches are searches for specific days of the week or
“mode of instruction” if you are looking for online classes only.
• Using the three letter course code where we typed in BIO before
counts as one of those two.
• Selecting “Undergraduate” for Course Career is another helpful one.
Gen Ed Category
• Our suggestion (if you are a first-year student) is to change “Course
Number” to “less than or equal to” and use 299. Otherwise all classes
• If you know which GenEd categories you need to fulfill but aren’t sure
what classes to take to do so, this is a very helpful tool.
• The very last option is “Gen Ed Category”, where you can select one of
the categories.
Your Search Results
What does all this mean?
Sorting through your results:
• Results will appear in alphabetical order by the three-letter code, and
then in ascending order by the three-digit course number.
• Multiple sections may appear for any given course.
• Select the course with the day, time, location, and instructor that best
meets your needs.
The colored symbols:
Green circle: Class is open and has available seats
Yellow triangle: Class is currently full, however you can add yourself to the wait list.
Blue Square: Class is not available at all. There is no wait list or wait list is full.
Staff? TBA? What is this business?
Some information may not be available immediately, such as the
instructor or the location. Keep checking back for updates.
The long blue link that says “view details”:

• Number of credits this course is worth
• Number of seats taken/available
• How long the wait list is, if applicable
• If the course counts for any Gen Ed requirements
