Circle USD 375 2003-2004 Annual Report FOCUS Volume 34 Issue 4 June 2004 Car-Rt-Sort BOXHOLDER Towanda, KS 67144 Non-Profit Org. U.S. Postage PAID Towanda, KS 67144 Permit #1 Circle and State recognize “Friends of Education” Circle District’s 2004 Friends of Education nominees were honored for their contributions to the schools and students of USD 375 at the South Central Kansas Friends of Education banquet April 17, 2004. The Friends of Education recognition program is sponsored by the Kansas Confidence in Public Education Task Force made up of representatives of the Kansas Department of Education, KNEA, Kansas School Board Association, and Kansas School Public Relations Organization. Yearly the task force recognizes outstanding contributions of parents, organizations, businesses and patrons for their support of public education in Kansas. Jeff Varner was nominated as a devoted volunteer worker at Circle High School. Jeff ran the first down marker at CHS football games; for many years kept the scorebook for basketball games and now helps with the CHS music and drama departments. Jeff virtually runs all the sound equipment and systems for all of the musicals, plays, and music department concerts. Verus Bank of El Dorado was nominated as an outstanding Private Institution supporting education in USD 375. It is for the ‘personal’ interactions and support that the staff and in particular, CEO and Senior Advisor, Richard Chase; Chairman of the Board, Kevin Chase; Senior Vice-President, Cran Chase; and Risk Management Officer, Chad Chase have given the school district for many years. In August each year Verus Bank invites all staff members and spouses to the Back to School BBQ on the Chase Farm. Their support goes beyond annual supper, and includes supporting the ‘Pennies for Patients’ with Oil Hill School students, providing a free checking account for STUCO funds and putting together a special incentive plan for Circle District staff for direct deposit of staff payroll checks. The Chase family has been active in the Circle School District for more than 30 years. Mr. Richard Chase served on the school board, and is a founding member of the school district’s Circle Educational Foundation. The district’s third nominee for Friends of Education recognition was the Benton Lions Club. Some of their projects have included: sponsoring and organizing the community celebration Benton Days, furnishing eyeglasses or other visual aids to students and other community members and donating $3,000 for clay and supplies to build baseball diamonds behind Benton Elementary. The most recent project of the Lions Club was a donation of over $4,200 to the Benton Elementary playground fund. Circle District proudly recognizes these individuals and organizations for their contributions to our district. Page 13 Oil Hill expands Memory Garden Oil Hill Elementary’s garden is growing well, thanks to domations of many individuals. The Memory Garden, the official name chosen by the students several years ago, gives outdoor area where all students have an opportunity to work and contribute. Dedication of OHS Memory Garden will be at Oil Hill’s Open House in the fall of 2004. Money for plants has come in part from grants awarded by the Circle Eduational Foundation. Mrs. Gruver, Mrs. Riggles, and the fifth graders prepared the area. Mrs. Hearn and the sixth grade helped the other classes to plant their part of the garden. Buter Rural Electric donated $500.00 to use towards purchase of a plastic covered steel picnic table and bench in the Memory Garden. The school hopes to be able to purchase up to three more tables. Janice Adams, former OHS teacher, organized donations for this project from the parents of students who have passed away. The money was used to purchase bushes and an additional bench. A plaque of students for whom memorial gifts were given has been placed near the bench. Families donating were Mr. and Mrs. John Mikel (Johnnie Mikel), Mr. and Mrs. Steve Jensen and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ward (Brooke Ward), Mr. and Mrs. Bryce Cook and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Cook (Gerald Cook), Mr. and Mrs. Brad Cool (Blake Cool), Mr. and Mrs. Jack Buckner (Caye Buckner), Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Martin (Donnie Goucher), and Mr. and Mrs. Gene Kamp (Julie Wilkinson). Oil Hill students have also been very busy recycling aluminum cans with the help of Kenneth Wagner and Wilbur Widick. Over 9500 pop can tabs were given to the Ronald McDonald House. Money from the recycled cans is going to support the school’s Memory Garden. Dan has a total of six years teaching experience at Circle High School. He is a very unique teacher in Circle district in that he holds certification for teaching both math and science at the high school level. Dan was one of 25 teachers in the United States selected by Boeing to attend the 2003 Boeing Educators Space Camp in Huntsville Alabama. He was nominated for this all expense paid trip for his genuine concern for students and commitment to excellence in education. This May he returned for a second trip to the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville Alabama, where he and two Circle High students presented findings for the Personal Satellite Assistant Simulator Project. Through these opportunities and experiences at the Kansas Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, Dan has gained valuable information that he incorporates into his teaching. One example is a lesson in which Dan teaches about the properties of thermodynamics. He has an actual space shuttle tile that he torches in front of the class. The students observe how quickly heat dissipates off the tile’s surface. By consistently integrating demonstrations such as this into his teaching, Dan makes his classes interesting and appealing to his students. Dan’s enthusiasm for teaching also carries over in his advanced math classes of trigonometry, statistics and calculus, where enrollments have tripled over the last five year. Dan will represent Circle District in the 2005 Kansas Teacher of the Year recognition program. Page 12
