The role of a camera light is a
delicate and dif ficult one. It is
delicate
because
when
in
operation, the quality of the final
product reflects directly on your
reputation as well as the longevity
of your career. The camera light’s
role becomes dif ficult when one
doesn’t fully understand its
purpose. For example, in a
controlled environment such as a
movie studio, a camera light is
of ten used for ver y specific
reasons. The main reason is to
capture the star’s facial expressions,
minimizing facial shadows under
the chin and eyes and to reflect
a “sparkle” in the eyes, making
the actor or actress look aler t
and animated as the camera rolls in
or away.
That particular light is very “sof t” or
dif fused, and it is always controlled
by a dimming system so as to
increase or decrease its intensity as
the camera moves, to keep a
consistent brightness level on the
subject.
The light is always
positioned 6-12 inches above the
camera lens to avoid red-eye
syndrome. Red-eye is a problem
news broadcasters par ticularly
need to avoid, because in their
ef for t to be compact and
self-contained, they usually mount
the camera light too close to the
camera lens.

Digital Video and HDTV have placed
new demands on DP’s and cameras.
The extremely low sensitivity of the
camera and the digitalization of the
image have created a need to
revolutionize the way we light a scene
for video.
Until recently, lighting has remained
basically the same since the 1900’s.
Low lux and digital technologies can
produce a greater, even more enhanced
picture from theoriginal. Unfortunately,

achieve one thousand or more
charge cycles when using a four
stage Minus Delta V charging
method. The same tests have
shown older batteries will recover
substantially

reducing

The heart of the Delta force system
is a computing micro controller
monitoring the batteries “vital
signs,” voltage current and other
variables. When a battery is first
connected, the charger will

hen Nickel Cadmium cells
are manufactured, they go through
several stages – assembly, testing
and serializing. After the final
manufacturing stage, cells average
1.2 volts each; some higher, some
lower. It takes ten cells to make a
12-volt belt. If a lower voltage cell
is assembled with a group of
stronger or even average cells, the
weaker cell is, naturally, going to
get charged and discharged first,
and eventually it will be the first
one to die, killing the entire ten-cell
group.
To prevent this from
happening, a manufacturer must
volt-match the cells.
This is known in the industry as
“cell-balancing.” This practice
allows all cells to charge/discharge
at the same time, preventing
premature death. Cell-balancing
requires special equipment, knowhow and time. It is an expensive
quality check, and the only element
aside from the charger that will
assure the longevity of your
battery.
The performance
difference between the balance
groups is negligible, but extremely
important in order to assure top
performance and full life cycles.
