SOUTH AFRICAN MEN’S OLYMPIC TEAM Men’s Football Tournament: 4 – 20 August 2016 Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Manaus, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, São Paulo, BRAZIL MEDIA GUIDE S O U T H A F R I C A N F O OT B A L L A S S O C I AT I O N G A M E S O F T H E X X X I O LY M P I A D SYDNEY 2000: GAMES OF THE XXVII OLYMPIAD MESSAGE FROM DR DANNY JORDAAN Amaglug-glug’s™ Debut Appearance President of the South African Football Association We have invested heavily to make sure that our two teams heading to the Rio Olympics are fully prepared for the rigours of playing in a tournament of this magnitude. Since the men’s qualification last December (finishing third in the African championship), no stone has been left unturned in a bid to make sure that Owen da Gama’s charges make a statement in Brazil and give a good account of themselves. All the signs are there that this could be a second Games to remember for South Africa, after our men’s side first appeared at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and beat Brazil convincingly. Clockwise: Daniel Matsau, Siyabonga Nomvete and Matthew Booth were all members of the Under 23 squad which beat New Zealand 4 – 2 on aggregate The Men’s Olympic Team played away against hosts Brazil as part of their preparations and have just taken part in the COSAFA Cup tournament hosted by Namibia where they stunned the senior teams representing our Southern African neighbours and lifted the trophy for the fourth time. Soon after the COSAFA Cup, the team left for Japan where they played against their Asian counterparts who are also Rio bound. Though fatigue had the last say, it was the exercise of playing in different cultures against different styles that served as the valuable lesson before heading to the Olympics. in a play-off to claim the last spot for the Sydney Olympics. As the fourth best African country just missing out on automatic We as the Association are gratified that our Vision 2022 is really beginning to take shape as amply evidenced by how well our junior national teams are performing on the continental and global stage. That is exactly what Vision 2022 entails; that our national teams must be ranked consistently among the top three in Africa and among the top twenty in the world. qualification, South Africa had a last chance to qualify by competing against the winner of the Oceania This Men’s Olympic Team will show us how far we have closed the gap and are ready to hold our own with the rest of the world. I wish all of you the very best and urge you to seize this wonderful opportunity that the Olympics affords all athletes. qualification (Australia had automatically qualified as hosts). Amaglug-glug went on to record a sublime 3 – 1 victory over pre- MESSAGE FROM MR OWEN DA GAMA tournament favourites Brazil (including 20-year-old Ronaldinho) in front of a record 37,000 fans at the Gabba in Brisbane but came unstuck against Japan and Slovakia, losing 1 – 2 in both games. Head Coach of the Men’s Olympic Team Our journey as the Men’s Olympic Team started with a selection camp that played against Palestine in March 2015 at the Dura Stadium in Hebron, Palestine. We won 2 – 1 after trailing 0 – 1 at half time. We started our African Games campaign with numerous challenges but this learning curve was just what the doctor ordered. We lost our first match away to Sudan 0 – 2 and won the return leg at home 1 – 0. The Olympic qualifiers were up next with an away 1 – 1 draw and a 3 – 0 home win over Zimbabwe which ensured our passage to the 8-nation CAF Under 23 Africa Cup of Nations in Senegal. We hosted Egypt in Durban for an international friendly match last June, winning 2 – 1, and then in September continued our preparations for West Africa with a trip to Tunisia for two more friendlies, winning 4 – 0 in the first match and losing 1 – 2 in the second. In Senegal we were pitted in Group A with hosts and African Games champions Senegal, plus Zambia and Tunisia. We lost our opener against Senegal 3 – 1, but eventually manoeuvred past the hosts on penalties in the play-off to secure Africa’s third qualification spot for Rio 2016. Playing Career 1975 – 1991: Arcadia Sheppard, Colchester United, Pretoria Callies, Dynamos, Beerschot (BEL), Our preparations have gone well this year with challenging matches in South America and Asia and Derry City (IRL), Figueres (ESP), Durban we also clinched the COSAFA Cup trophy which is our regional competition (Southern Africa). I wish Leeds United, Moroka Swallows, Dynamos, to thank the National Soccer League (our professional arm) for its willing cooperation to facilitate SuperSport United SA Club Coach 1992 – 2013: Dynamos, Silver Stars, PSM Parkhurst, Platinum Stars, Orlando Pirates, Free State Stars, Bloemfontein Celtic SA National Coach 2014 – : Senior Men (Assistant), U23 Men (Head) team selection throughout this period. As a team we see this as an honour to participate on one of the greatest stages of world sport and in particular a showcase for emerging football stars of the future. This is truly an ideal platform for our current generation to rub shoulders with some of the greatest players in the world but the bigger goal remains to bring back a medal to our beloved country.
