1. HEALTH HAZARDS
ROUTE(S) OF ENTRY:
Inhalation, skin and Ingestion
INHALATION:
LC50: 347 PPM in rats (1 hour)
INGESTION:
LD50: 214MG/KG in rats
May cause burns to human (and animal) tissue contacted, including eye corrosion and corneal ulceration.
If ingested, may cause severe burns to the mucous membranes of the mouth and esophagus.
Toxic effects described in animals from single exposure by inhalation include respiratory irritation.
CARCINOGENICITY:
NTP: No IARC: No OSHA regulated: No
Overexposure by inhalation may include irritation of the upper respiratory passages or erosion of dental surfaces.
Higher exposures may lead to temporary lung irritation.
Individuals with pre-existing disease of the lungs may have increased susceptibility to the toxicity of excessive exposures.
2. EMERGENCY FIRST AID
If sulfuric acid is spilled, immediately flush skin or eyes with clean water for at least 15 minutes and remove contaminated
clothing and shoes. If medical treatment is delayed, immerse the affected area in iced water. AVOID FREEZING TISSUE.
If swallowed, do NOT induce vomiting; drink large quantities if water of fruit juice.
In all cases, contact a physician immediately.
3. SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN DURING HANDLING AND STORAGE:
Avoid rough handling. Do not store above 140°F. Always have water safety showers and eyewash fountains available.
OTHER PRECAUTIONS:
Wear full protective clothing when handling this material. No smoking regulations must be enforced as hydrogen is evolved
during charging of battery.
4. REACTIVITY HAZARDS
Stable under normal conditions.
INCOMPATIBILITIES (MATERIALS TO AVOID):
Sulfuric acid reacts vigorously with alkaline solutions, metal powders, strong oxidizers, reducers and combustibles.
HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION OR BY-PRODUCTS:
Toxic fumes may be released if incinerated. Flammable hydrogen gas produced during charging.
HAZARDOUS POLYMERIZATION:
Will not occur.

5. FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS
FLASH POINT: N/A
FLAMMABLE LIMITS: LEL: N/A
UEL: N/A
EXTINGUISHING MEDIA:
Water, dry chemical. Do not use carbon dioxide (CO2) extinguishers directly on plastic containers due to possibility of thermal
shock causing cracking and electrolyte leakage.
SPECIAL FIRE FIGHTING PROCEDURES:
Wear full protective clothing. Use NIOSH/MSHA approved positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus. Neutralize
runoff with lime, soda ash, etc., to prevent corrosion of metals and formation of hydrogen gas.
UNUSUAL FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS:
Sulfuric Acid can react with oxidizing or reducing materials and when heated it emits highly toxic fumes. Lead can react with
oxidizing materials and when heated emits highly toxic fumes.

8. ENVIRONMENTAL PROCEDURES
STEPS TO BE TAKEN IN CASE MATERIAL IS RELEASED OR SPILLED:
Comply with federal, state and local regulations on reporting releases, containing spills and reparation. Contain spill to smallest
possible area and absorb as appropriate. Avoid splashing and misting redemption.
WASTE DISPOSAL METHOD:
Comply with federal, state and local regulations. If approved, neutralize with soda ash or lime and transfer to waste treatment
system.
9. INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE CONTROL MEASURES
VENTILATION:
Adequate to meet TLV requirements.
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION:
Proper acid canister-type full face piece (See MCA data sheet SD-201).
EYE PROTECTION:
Chemical splash goggles; full-length face shield.
HAND PROTECTION:
Rubber or plastic acid-proof gauntlet gloves.
OTHER PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:
Rubber or plastic apron and boots; long sleeve wool, acrylic or polyester clothing; acid-proof suit and hood.
WORK/HYGIENIC PRACTICES:
Always use extreme care; wash thoroughly after handling.

10. ENVIRONMENTAL REPORTING REQUIREMENTS
EMERGENCY PLANNING AND COMMUNITY RIGHT-TO-KNOW ACT PF 1986 (EPCRA):
Lead-acid batteries are manufactured using chemicals subject to the reporting requirements of EPCRA, sections 302, 311, 312
and 313 (40 CFR 355 and 372):
CAS#
7664-93-9
7439-92-1

Sulfuric acid
Lead
REPORTABLE QUANTITY
500 pounds*
10,000 pounds
*Battery electrolyte is a mixture of sulfuric acid and water. Only the amount of 100% sulfuric acid must be counted in the
reportable quantity.
A copy of the MSDS may be required to be filed with the local emergency planning commission, state emergency response
commission and local fire department in accordance with sections of EPCRA.
