Fall 2011 Presented by: Neeley Fellow Student Organization -Alumni Relations Committee & Dr. Beata Jones Memories sweet, comrades true 1 First off, welcome to the newly revamped Fellows Alumni Newsletter. Through this publication it is our goal to keep all former Fellows as up to date and connected back to the program as possible. This fall the Fellows have been hard at work with seniors working on thesis projects and beginning to pave their respective career paths. Juniors have been working with non-profits from around the area and are off to a great start on service learning projects, and the sophomores have started strong making the transition from TCU freshman to Neeley Fellow. I hope this reaches you in good health and good spirits. If there is anything else you would like to see in the next publication please let myself or Dr. Jones know. Feel free to contact me personally by cell phone or email, as I have listed my information below. Thanks and enjoy! Sean Shahkarami VP of Alumni Relations (682) 551-1819 sean.shahkarami@tcu.edu 2 Congratulations to the Neeley Fellow class of 2011 and the newest members of Neeley Fellow Alumni! On behalf of the faculty, staff, and all others involved in the Fellows program, we wish you all the best of luck in all of your future endeavors. 3 Reiterating the sentiment from my last letter in the spring, 2011 is quite a remarkable year for the Neeley Fellows Program. To brag on the current seniors, we swept the Mr. & Miss TCU Competition, have 9 already employed or accepted into graduate programs for post-graduation, and have begun research on numerous thesis topics. In fact, the Senior Class is leaving behind quite a legacy: · · · · · 5 Sorority & Fraternity Presidents 2 new organizations established with Neeley Fellows leadership: TCU SportsNet & Ignite Presidents of Campus Organizations, including TCU Ambassadors Student Government Leaders Frog Camp Directors The Junior & Sophomore Classes, however, are already blazing new trails. They have won case competitions, started entrepreneurial ventures, and set a new standard for service learning projects. Rather than coordinate with different nonprofit organizations each year, the program has established a Social Investment Portfolio to build involvement with a set number of organizations. In fact, through work with the Pro Players Foundation, the Neeley Fellows program has now developed a sustainable relationship with the Texas Rangers and their respective foundation. Just recently, I traveled to Phoenix, AZ to speak on behalf of the program and the John V. Roach Honors College at the National Collegiate Honors Conference. We are beginning to gain national recognition, which is helping our recruiting efforts. The Class of 2015 is the most highly praised in TCU history, and we are hosting networking receptions and honors events to obtain the top talent. We look forward to having some of you return to campus for an alumni panel, preparing us for what lies ahead in the working world. Please continue to stay in touch with the program, and thank you all for building such a strong foundation for the program. Best of luck with all your endeavors! Go Frogs! -Sara Deatherage 4 As always, the new Fellows class set new records for GPA and SAT scores. They come from all over the globe and represent various backgrounds and walks of life. They are listed individually on the next page with selected information and their email addresses, so feel free to reach out to any who you might feel connected to whether it be through fraternity/sorority bonds or other extracurricular activities. Lastly, we say congratulations to all the new Fellows! You have a long, but fun and educational road ahead! 5 Name: Yatin Agarwal Name: William Dace Major(s): Finance & Economics Major(s): Accounting & Finance GPA: 3.89 GPA: 3.97 Other Activity: Chancellor’s Leadership Program Other Activity: Pi Kappa Phi Email: yatin.agarwal@tcu.edu Email: william.dace@tcu.edu Name: Brooks Anthony Name: Lindsay Dixon Major(s): Accounting Major(s): Marketing GPA: 3.93 GPA: 3.93 Other Activity: Pi Kappa Phi Other Activity: Pi Beta Phi Email: b.w.anthony@tcu.edu Email: d.l.dixon@tcu.edu Name: Taylor Baker Major(s): Finance & Accounting GPA: 3.93 Other Activity: Beta Upsilon Chi Email: taylor.baker@tcu.edu Name: John Eastman Major(s): Finance GPA: 3.70 Other Activity: Phi Kappa Sigma Email: john.eastman@tcu.edu Name: Blaire Butler Name: Lindsay Faulkner Major(s): Business & Spanish Major(s): Business & Spanish GPA: 3.89 GPA: 3.77 Other Activity: Zeta Tau Alpha Other Activity: Alpha Chi Omega Email: b.butler@tcu.edu Email: l.m.faulkner@tcu.edu 6 Name: Madison Grigsby Name: Katie Kolepp Major(s): Entrepreneurial Management & Finance Major(s): Accounting & Supply and Value Chain Management GPA: 3.80 GPA: 3.78 Other Activity: Sigma Phi Epsilon Other Activity: Alpha Chi Omega Email: m.c.grigsby@tcu.edu Email: katie.kolepp@tcu.edu Name: Rachel Humphries Name: Evan Lang Major(s): Marketing Major(s): Entrepreneurial Management & Finance GPA: 4.0 Other Activity: Alpha Delta Pi Email: r.humphries@tcu.edu GPA: 3.89 Other Activity: Pi Kappa Phi Email: e.lang@tcu.edu Name: Steven Imaizumi Name: Michelle Lutzky Major(s): Business Major(s): Finance & Marketing GPA: 3.70 GPA: 3.79 Other Activity: Sigma Phi Epsilon Other Activity: Zeta Tau Alpha Email: steven.imaizumi@tcu.edu Email: michelle.lutzky@tcu.edu Name: Chloe Johnson Name: Brianna Mckay Major(s): Accounting & Finance Major(s): Marketing GPA: 3.88 GPA: 3.70 Other Activity: Frog Aides Other Activity: Sigma Kappa Email: c.johnson2010@tcu.edu Email: Brianna.mckay@tcu.edu Name: Leah Klein Name: Katie Neuberger Major(s): Finance & Accounting Major(s): Finance & Accounting GPA: 3.74 GPA: 4.0 Other Activity: Alpha Chi Omega Other Activity: Alpha Chi Omega Email: l.klein@tcu.edu Email: k.neuberger919@tcu.edu 7 Name: Preston Oliver Name: Lauren Sharp Major(s): Business Major(s): Business GPA: 3.90 GPA: 3.66 Other Activity: Sigma Phi Epsilon Other Activity: Chi Omega Email: preston.oliver@tcu.edu Email: l.sharp@tcu.edu Name: Alyssa Paneri Name: Michael Smith Major(s): Marketing & Fashion Merchandising Major(s): Marketing & Entrepreneurial Management GPA: 3.59 GPA: 3.70 Other Activity: Pi Beta Phi Other Activity: Pi Kappa Phi Email: alyssa.paneri@tcu.edu Email: m.f.smith@tcu.edu Name: Hannah Pohler Name: Allison Sterling Major(s): Entrepreneurial Management Major(s): Accounting & Finance GPA: 3.93 Other Activity: Pi Beta Phi GPA: 3.77 Other Activity: Alpha Chi Omega Email: a.sterling@tcu.edu Email: h.g.pohler@tcu.edu Name: Brent Pulliam Name: Erin Terry Major(s): Finance & Accounting Major(s): Business GPA: 3.77 GPA: 4.0 Other Activity: Sigma Phi Epsilon Other Activity: Kappa Alpha Theta Email: b.l.pulliam18@tcu.edu Email: erin.terry@tcu.edu Name: Matthew Riesen Name: Riley Tigert Major(s): Business Major(s): Finance & Accounting GPA: 4.0 GPA: 3.88 Other Activity: Pi Kappa Phi Other Activity: Pi Beta Phi Email: matthew.riesen@tcu.edu Email: r.k.tigert@tcu.edu 8 Name: Kaity Wegen Major(s): Entrepreneurial Management & BIS Name: Mackenzie Workman Major(s): Finance & Accounting GPA: 3.87 GPA: 3.92 Other Activity: Chancellor’s Leadership Program Other Activity: TCU Leaps Email: m.workman@tcu.edu Email: k.wegen@tcu.edu Name: James Williams Name: Tyler Yarnell Major(s): Finance & Accounting Major(s): Finance & Accounting GPA: 3.75 GPA: 3.90 Other Activity: Pi Kappa Phi Other Activity: Sigma Phi Epsilon Email: james.a.williams@tcu.edu Email: tyler.yarnell@tcu.edu 9 TCU held its fall Career and Inten Expo Wednesday, September 21st accommodating an incredible 108 employers. Businesses ranging from fast food gurus InN-Out Burgers to representatives from Deloitte and Lockheed Martin were all in attendance at the event Hundreds of students flocked to the event and were able to consult with the companies about possible jobs and internships. A list of each company, along with the positions they were looking to fill and the majors necessary, was provided to students beforehand, which allowed us to narrow in on the booths that were most interesting to us. Representatives from each institution then provided information about their company and the type of people they are looking to hire. It was a very insightful and informative event for students of all grade levels. Being a Fellow allowed us to distinguish ourselves among the crowd. Many companies already knew about the program and were very impressed by the caliber of students involved in it. For sophomores, this was our first opportunity to see how people outside of TCU regarded the Fellows program and we were pleasantly surprised to learn the weight that it carries among employers. 10 Fellows Family Tree: 2009-2014 2009 Fellows Grand-GrandGrand-Grand Big 2010 Fellows GrandGrandGrand Big Brandon Chamberlin - Accenture Adam Goodlett – Law School-U of Oklahoma 2011 Fellows 2012 Fellows Grand-Grand Big Grand Big Pete ChapmanJP Morgan Kristen Chapman – American Airlines Mariana MoralesCementos Progreso Ashley Homsher – Q Investments Corey Rollins – Mission Trip Caleb Slavin – Lockheed Martin Lizzie Dow – Fidelity Investments Maddison GrigsbyTeach For America Catherine Anderson – Ernst & Young 2014 Fellows Big Little Carson Bassett – BP Nate Arnold – The Richards Group 2013 Fel- Chase Bruton Brandon Fawks John Eastman David Lindow Josh Simpson Taylor Baker Will Jung Matt Riesen Jennifer Michael Alyssa Paneri David Bower– AXA Advisors Peyton Bryant– Goldman Sachs Morgan Buckley– ResearchNow Marcus Roper Jacob Broom Carrie Patterson Riley Tigert Megan Philipp– Gus Bates Adam Wilson – Law School-U California, Hastings Ryan Wilson – PWC Mark McGlothlin Ryan Hoff– Justin Paxton Stephens Inc. Ever since my freshmen year, I have aspired to be a part of this prestigious program. Between the small class sizes taught by the top professors, the many great networking opportunities, and the international emphasis of traveling as a class together, it simply became I goal I hoped to achieve. Right now I am halfway through my first semester as a Neeley Fellow and I absolutely love it. Neeley Fellows is my family within the business school that is going to mold me into the professional businesswoman I hope to be. I love the connectedness of the program, such as the many juniors and seniors that have offered to help the sophomores on difficult homework assignments and projects. I also enjoy walking into Smith each Monday at 4:45 only to see all ninety Fellows congregated in the lobby area before we all disperse into our different labs. It is one big community and we are there to encourage to support and encourage one another. I know my journey as a Neeley Fellow has just begun, but I cannot wait to see what the future holds. I know from other students that the course load will be challenging, but I am excited about the endless opportunities and possibilities. I cannot wait to go to New York over spring break with the rest of the Fellows class and I am excited to get to know my business peers. 14 Celebrating the Generosity of Trisha Hillman-Philipp Last semester, Trisha Hillman-Philipp, mother of former Neeley Fellow Megan Philipp, greeted Senior Associate Dean of the Neeley School Dr. Bill Moncrief and Neeley Fellows Director Dr. Beata Jones with an extraordinary and entirely unexpected gift. Dr. Jones said that after the Neeley Fellows Graduation Banquet last May, “Megan’s mother walked up to a table where Dr. Moncrief and I were standing. She surprised us by not only thanking us for the kind of a woman that Megan had become while in the program, but also by sharing with us that she had established a scholarship in Megan’s name to benefit the Neeley Fellows. Both Dr. Moncrief and I were truly taken aback. We were speechless and then got emotional. We never think of the impact that the program has the potential of creating and have never expected such a grand gesture.” Hillman-Philipp’s extraordinary act of generosity was due in part to her daughter’s development in the Fellows Program. Like most sophomores entering the Neeley Fellows Program, Megan Philipp was bright and accomplished, yet uncertain of the journey ahead. After three years of dedication to the program, however, Megan was more certain of where she wanted life’s journey to take her, and better prepared to confront the challenges of being a young professional. By her senior year, Megan was serving as President of AMA, interning at Gus Bates Insurance & Investments (where she now works) and crafting a Senior Honors Thesis with her mentor and friend Dr. Grau. As a Fellow, Megan matured into a “confident young woman who knew exactly how she made a difference,” said Dr. Jones. Megan said that the Fellows Program “prepared me for the business world and taught me life lessons in responsibility, team work, and leadership. One of the greatest aspects of the program was the group of friends I gained.” While the tasks of the program were at times difficult, Megan believes that they equipped her for job interviews and for interactions with clients and coworkers. 15 The Fellows Program improved Megan’s confidence and taught her the importance of being bold and chasing after big opportunities. “Getting into Fellows proved to me that sticking myself out there is always worth the chance of getting to participate in something great,” said Megan. “That continued to be true throughout the Fellows Program and even now. You never know what you can learn from an opportunity to join a class, a club, or participate on a committee. The more you put yourself out there the more people you will meet.” Trisha noticed the transformation of her daughter into a confident, young woman. She said that the Fellows Program “broadened [Megan’s] thinking and awareness” and provided Megan an opportunity to build life-long friendships, both with students and professors. “Megan definitely gained confidence in herself and her abilities,” said Hillman-Philipp, largely because of “those special and dedicated professors” who took an interest in her success. Trisha has pledged to establish the Megan Elizabeth Philipp Scholarship, a $50,000 endowed scholarship in honor of her daughter. Trisha said that she and Megan’s father “are so grateful to TCU and the Neeley Fellows Program and we wanted to give Megan a special graduation present that would have a lasting impact on others while honoring her for her achievements.” Megan said that her mom is a true believer in the Fellows Program and what it has to offer. She is truly honored that her mom “gave such a gracious gift” and very pleased “that it will help future Fellows students.” Once endowed, the Megan Elizabeth Philipp Scholarship will award approximately $2,500 a year to an eligible Neeley Fellow, with second preference going to a business student. The award will give future Fellows the opportunity to engage in experiential learning, incredible networking, and memorable bonding experiences with lifelong friends. 16 Dr. Moncrief said that “We are truly excited about the gift from the Philipp family. It is particularly gratifying that the family saw the value of the Fellows Program and witnessed changes in Megan as she was in it.” Dr. Jones hopes that “the [scholarship] is a reflection on the quality of the experience that Megan had in the Neeley Fellows. The scholarship may be viewed as an indicator of the value that the Neeley Fellows Program can create in the students who embrace it”—students like Megan. We are all very grateful for Trisha’s deep-rooted belief in the Neeley Fellows Program, and for her wonderful, generous, unexpected gift. On behalf of all of us in the Neeley Fellows Program, we would like to say thank you to Trisha Hillman-Philipp. Your generous contribution will continue to make a difference in the program and in the lives of Fellows for generations. Megan Philipp and family at the Neeley Fellows graduation luncheon By: Josh Simpson 17 This is a new page that I thought you all might enjoy. This past year I started my own business, a text message and social media marketing service called BuzzWhere. While doing research for my start-up I stumbled upon a few books that I believe may be worth sharing. Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson is the biography of the iconic CEO of Apple. Beginning from the time of his birth and adoption up until the time of his death Steve Jobs tells the life story of a deeply flawed yet madly brilliant genius whose creations changed the world and will continue to shape the future. Viral Loop by Adam Penenberg is a great read for anyone interested in learning about the evolution of the web 2.0 world-and maybe even how to profit from it. Penenberg studies some of the most successful dot com companies and comes to the conclusion that the most successful web start-ups create something consumers want so much that they share it with others, hence the formula for creating a “viral loop”. This book has implications in almost all areas of business including marketing, BIS, finance, and even supply chain. The Goal by Eliyahu Goldratt is a business classic and has been taught in many MBA classes for years. It smoothly explains the mathematics and philosophy behind the theory of constraints in an easy to understand, well written novel. It tells the story of Alex Rogo and how he saves his manufacturing plant by implementing a vastly more accurate cost accounting system. This book would be great for anyone in accounting, management, or supply chain. 18 19 Alumni Events, Spring 2012 We would love to have you join us for the following events.
