The training achievements of students and
organisations will be recognised at the
State Government’s WA Training Awards.
Training and Workforce Development
Minister Liza Harvey said applications
opened on Monday and this year’s
program would include a new award.
“We have introduced a new category,
the WA International Student of the Year,
providing an opportunity to celebrate the
successes of international students in our
training system,” she said.
“We have also broadened the eligibility
of the School-based Apprentice of the
Year category, so that school students
undertaking Certificate II qualifications
and above are now eligible to apply.
“In addition, the WA Training Initiative
Award has been replaced by the
Industry Collaboration Award to
recognise cooperation between two or
more organisations in innovative skills
development.”
Students and organisations need to get
their applications in by 5pm, Friday May
13 for a chance to win $5000 in cash or
prizes and be eligible to compete against
the nation’s best in the Australian Training
Awards later this year.

In 2012 Clinipath Pathology’s decision to
adopt a widespread program of vocational
education and training (VET) led to
significant improvements for the business
and its employees.
In just three years the program proved to
be successful, with Clinipath Pathology
winning the 2015 Australian Apprenticeships
– Employer Award at the national level.
Clinipath Pathology CEO Dr Gordon Harloe
was proud of the award and the staff and
for their enthusiasm in embracing training
opportunities.
“It’s a significant achievement. Our core
values include commitment to service
excellence and to be enthusiastic about
continuous improvement and this award
demonstrates that we actively pursue these
values,” Dr Harloe said.
“It recognises the great work our staff has
done and endorses our view that quality is
an imperative.”
Clinipath Pathology employs about 800 staff,
including 70 per cent of which are mature
aged. Since 2012 more than 500 employees
have achieved a VET credential.
Patient Services Manager Ann Poole
said there had been clear benefits to the
business.
“Our employee retention rate is now around
85 per cent, which is excellent, given the
industry has high workforce mobility,” she
said.
“We are the employer of choice and now
rarely have to advertise for pathology
collector positions.”

Western Australia had a training program
like Clinipath’s.
“Deregulation of collection centres has seen
centre numbers increase dramatically in the
last five years and, therefore, demand for
staff,” he said.
“We had to be innovative with our
recruitment and training to ensure quality
was maintained at every level.”
Dr Harloe said its continuous improvements,
which were part of the working culture
at Clinipath Pathology, helped make it
the laboratory of choice for patients and
doctors.
“Patients can choose which lab will do their
blood tests, and company-wide training
has enabled us to develop a reputation for
quality,” he said.
“We have the largest numbers of collection
centres in the state, so more doctors are
choosing us too.”

practices and work, health and safety.
“We can now offer training to every
employee, which aligns to their job roles,”
Ms Poole said.
“There is a program appropriate to every
department for existing and new employee
positions. This provides opportunity for all
staff, ensuring continuous improvement.”
The Australian Training Awards success
has provided Clinipath Pathology with a
reputation in the industry as respected
educators, which demonstrates its
commitment to training.
“Our input has been sought by agencies and
businesses working in the VET sector,” Ms
Poole said.

“At work I’ve been getting involved with
some of our senior managers and training
managers to talk about current and future
apprentices and what we could change to
enrich our apprentice programs even more
so than currently,” he said.
“Since the awards, my application into the
WA Police was accepted and I have now
started my six months training at the WA
Police Academy in Joondalup,” she said.
“The experience of going to Tasmania and
meeting the other Australian finalists is
something I will never forget.”

like my advice in certain areas, such as
recruiting Aboriginal people.”

“I know I believe in myself more now than I
did prior to the awards.

“I also wanted to try and be a role model
for all the Aboriginal kids in rural areas and
hopefully encourage them to fulfil their
dreams just like I have,” she said.
“If I had any advice to give to others
applying, it is to be yourself.
“The judges want to see who you are as a
person and what makes you unique.”
“There’s this real sense of drive and
passion to achieve my next set of goals
and move towards my long-term visions.
“I think that drive and passion comes from
going through the awards and stopping
to reflect on my journey up until now and
where it may go next.”
Jared said the application process
was relatively painless, and whilst the
interviews made him nervous, the panel
was very welcoming.
“The state and national teams go out
of their way to support you in the process.
Whether you need to bounce some interview
ideas off someone or need extra information
to address the criteria, they’re with you every
step of the way,” he said.
“As far as actually winning goes, words can’t
describe it.
“The elation, the shock and awe – it’s
unbelievably gratifying and humbling.”
Jared’s advice for applicants was simple.
“Forget about being bashful or thinking it
makes you up yourself or arrogant,” he said,
“If you think you’ve done well in your training
and your apprenticeship, let’s hear about it.”

Sparking a passion

NECA WA is the pre-eminent professional
association servicing the electrical and
communications industry.

The National Electrical and
Communications Association (NECA)
has over 1000 members in NECA WA
working in or serving the electrical
industry. It also includes Electrical Group
Training (EGT), the largest employer of
electrical apprentices in Australia, and the
College of Electrical Training (CET), the
largest trainer of electrical apprentices in
Australia.
In the 20 years since its inception, the
College of Electrical Training has trained
more than 20,000 apprentices. CET is now
the largest trainer of electrical apprentices
in Australia, training almost half of WA’s
future electricians.

As the WA and Australian Trainee of the
Year 2015, Sandra Van Der Gaag said the
awards had motivated her to keep working
on professional development and become
the best she could be.
CET currently has more than 1800
apprentices in training at its two campuses
in Jandakot and Joondalup.
It is not only the college that has been
recognised for its excellence in training.
A number of its instructors have been
formally acknowledged by the industry
for their contribution and commitment to
training apprentices in 2011, 2012, 2014
and 2015.
These apprentices are educated
in a modern and safety-conscious
environment. For a number of years CET
has maintained WorkSafe’s highest level of
safety plan, having been awarded Platinum
status in 2014.
CET remains committed to training and
developing the future of the electrical
industry through its involvement in
‘school-based’ pre-apprenticeships, which
allow people in Year 11 and 12 to begin
their training while remaining at school.
Over the past 20 years, CET has won many
awards, including WA’s Small Training
Provider of the Year in 2010. Just four
years later CET became the first non-State
Training Provider to win the WA Large
Training Provider of the Year award.
CET also provides a wide array of posttrade training courses to qualified
electricians and is considered a one-stop
shop for skills recognition and gap training
for overseas qualified electricians seeking
work in Australia.
“A traineeship can be daunting when
you are new to an industry, but winning
reminded me you can become good at
anything when you put your mind to it,”
she said.
The awards also gave Sandra a confidence
boost in her current job.
“I am now the health and safety
representative on my shift, in addition to
my core role as a process plant operator,”
she said.
“Interviews with various newspapers and
corporate magazines to highlight my success
have also been a great networking tool and
an effective way to promote the benefits of
skills training to the wider community.”
Sandra encouraged others to consider
entering the WA Training Awards.
“My tip for entering the awards would be
to encourage people to talk about why
they chose their traineeship and how it has
helped them achieve their goals.
“I have met many interesting people and
made good friends along the way,” she
said.
“Don’t be afraid to give examples, that
way the judges can relate to what you are
saying.”
