The 6th Annual Nova Scotia Gender and Sexuality Alliance Conference: Conference and Workshop Guide 1 About the OUTreach Workshop Guide This is the Workshop Guide for the 6th annual Nova Scotia Gender and Sexuality Alliance Conference: OUTreach! When registering you will be able to select one workshop for each session. There are three sessions on Saturday May 21st and two sessions on May 22nd. Don’t worry about remembering which workshops you have signed up for! You will be provided with a personalized name tag at the event indicating which workshop you will be attending. Please note that next to the title of the workshop it will indicate if the workshop is only for youth, only for advisors, or open to everyone (both youth and advisors). Registration Steps 1. Review this guide and select the workshops you are interested in attending for each session. 2. Follow the registration link on the website and click “Register Now!”. During this process you will sign up for sessions. There is a limit to the number of participants for each workshop so sign up early to try and secure your spot! If the workshop is full, revisit the workshop guide and pick a different workshop. Complete all the steps and you’ll be registered to attend the conference! How are these depictions detrimental and how are they helpful? What role does language and a character's personality play in queer stereotypes and misbeliefs? Why isn't it canon? A workshop where we divulge into queer culture in the media. S1 |Putting “Unity” in Community| Youth Your identity is multi-faceted. These various aspects of your identity impact your experiences in the world and shape who you are. Some of these identities give us privilege, others oppression. This workshop will explore how GSAs can work towards becoming more inclusive of LGBTQ students who experience multiple forms of oppression and how to put the “unity” in community. 5 S1 |Safer Sex Queered| Youth This is the fun, sexy, and pleasure-focused sex ed class you never got in high school. We aim to be inclusive by talking about different kinds of bits responding to different sensations, and opening up our minds to different pathways to pleasure! We'll cover the ins and outs of STI transmission, some risks involved in having different kinds of sex, how to talk about STIs and safer sex, and how to use barriers and make them sexy. The workshop will focus on folks who are often left out of safer sex education and conversations, including, but not limited to, people who are queer, trans, and/or women. S1 |GSA Challenges: Let’s strategize!| Youth Recruitment, activity ideas, parents, unsupportive administration, fundraising- the list goes on and on when it comes to challenges face! Let’s work together and develop strategies to address these issues! If you have experience addressing these challenges in your GSA, come and share your ideas! S1 |LGBTQ Rights: A Global Perspective| Youth LGBTQ people all around the world are fighting for their rights. This workshop will examine the various status of LGBTQ rights worldwide. Many LGBT newcomers face cultural and practical barriers to integrating in Canadian society. This integration then becomes even more complex with the addition of the familial/cultural stigmatization that's still felt based on their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. We will highlight and identify the intersectional strains that many face between culture, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, and race. By understanding and being aware of these challenges, we will better learn how to provide a supportive and accepting atmosphere on that basis. This workshop will have an interactive component and an open discussion. Come and share your experiences and hear others tell their stories. Ask for tips around coming out and learn what supports are available to you. Participants will be asked to anonymously write down questions, comments, or topics that they would like to discuss around coming out. They will then be drawn at random to explore as a group. S4|GSA Video Project| Youth GSAs across Nova Scotia are doing some amazing work! Students from across the Annapolis Valley region created a series of videos through a collaborative workshop process with theatre and media artists. This workshop includes a screening of these videos and the opportunity to chat with some of the GSA students involved. S4|Trans Healthcare in Nova Scotia| Youth This session will provide an overview of trans healthcare in Nova Scotia and within a Canadian context. We will discuss what services and procedures are covered by MSI and what is not, how to get access and navigate the system to receive the best care possible. Please bring your questions about trans healthcare for discussion! S4|Exploring Two-spirit Identity| Youth The concept of Two-spirit is becoming more mainstream with young indigenous people in Canada. Two Spirit identities have existed in Turtle Island (North America) for hundreds, if not thousands of years, among many Indigenous groups. In Atlantic Canada indigenous youth face challenges about gender and sexuality identity within their indigenous communities and cultures. The workshop aims to explore the concept of Two-spirit identity from a Mi'kmaw perspective. S4|Poetry Workshop| Youth This workshop will focus on poetry with LGBTQ themes through presentation of works from local poets and slam poetry from YouTube. Discussion topics will include audience reactions and responses, prominent LGBTQ poets, and the influence of poetry on the LGBTQ community.
