Funding for Church Buildings
We are only able to help churches with their wider community non-religious
activities. (For example some churches run youth clubs, community centres or
community outreach projects that are open to all, to address community needs,
rather than for worship or for promotion of religion.)
Some churches can have problems seeking funding for maintenance, repair or
refurbishment of their buildings. This information sheet is intended to give you a
starting point.
The first question you need to consider, is whether your church building is, or
could be, used for community activities as well as for worship or other religious
activities.
If you are seeking funding for work to a building that is purely used for worship or
other religious activities, you should check with your denomination’s area
governance structure. Most denominations have some funding. You will need to
find out whether there is anyone within your denomination that deals with property
and whether your church and/or the work you need to pay for will be eligible for
any assistance. You could also try asking other churches in the area, whether
from the same denomination or not, especially if you know that they have had
some work done to their buildings. If they have managed to secure any donations
or grants they might be able to give you the details.
You might like to think seriously about how you could use your church buildings
for the wider community. Most voluntary and community organisations need
places to meet. Can you offer this? Can your buildings be adapted to
accommodate them? But also, can your church itself do more to help local people
who are not members of your congregation? If you are seeking to develop your
community work, you might find then that you would be eligible to apply for
funding for building work and other costs, from organisations like the Church
Urban Fund; The Big Lottery Fund; and other charitable trusts.
The following is a list of Charitable Trusts that may make donations for repair,
maintenance or refurbishment of church buildings. You should send a SAE to
them for guidance where possible before writing appeal letters. For example,
some may only consider making a donation if your church is of any special
architectural or heritage interest. You should then write a tailored letter to the
Correspondent for each trust, following any guidance they give you. If they
require you to fill in an application form they will send you one. Don’t be tempted
to write one letter and copy it to all of them. Inappropriate applications are a
waste of time and resources, for you and for the charitable trusts that receive
them.
